Unused Graphics#
Backdrops#
Outer Corners#
Most backdrop sheets were given outer-corner sprites in Afterbirth to facilitate its new L-shaped rooms, but some of these can never be seen due to the lack of L-shaped rooms for most special rooms and for certain stages.

Characters#
Old Man Keeper#
Image file: \gfx\ui\main menu\charactermenu.png
Image file: \gfx\characters\costumes\character_015_keeper.png
Image file: \gfx\ui\boss\playerportrait_14_keeper.png
Image file: \gfx\ui\stage\playerportraitbig_keeper.png
Using Cheat Engine, the Keeper was playable since the initial release of Afterbirth. However, he was invisible as he had no sprites and he started with zero health. These graphics were added in later patches and remained in the game until they were replaced by the real Keeper sprites after the ARG had ended. These sprites ended up being used during the daily run on April 1st, 2016.
Maw of the Void Charge#
Image file: \gfx\characters\costumes\costume_399_mawofthevoid.png
The costume for Maw of the Void has sprites for it charging up. The laser Maw of the Void allows Isaac to fire is automatically charged up alongside firing tears, with no need for a special animation for charging it.
Blue Baby Colored Alts#

costume_358_thewiz |
||
costume_369_continuum |
The sprites for The Wiz and Continuum have separate blue and bluebaby sheets, where the blue sheets use the Anti-Gravity's blue colors, and the bluebaby sheets use Blue Baby's colors. Costumes are hard coded to load a pre-set list of colors, so the bluebaby sheets go unused.
The color differences between Anti-Gravity and Blue Baby were later rectified in Repentance, where Anti-Gravity's spritesheet was given Blue Baby's colors, and a tint is applied to the player instead to match the original colors.
Enemies & Bosses#
Mom's Dead Hand Alt#
Image file: \gfx\monsters\afterbirth\287.000_momsdead hand.png
An alternate version of the dead hands exists without showing the skeleton. It is never shown in-game.
Dank Death's Head Death Animation#
Image file: \gfx\monsters\afterbirth\212.001_dankdeathshead.png
The Dank Death's Head enemy has a death animation similar to the Death's Head death animation. This is never shown in game as Dank Death's Heads are required to be killed before clearing a room.
Black Gazing Globin#
Image file: \gfx\monsters\afterbirth\278.000_blackglobin.png
The spritesheet for the Black Globin enemies have unused recolors of the Gazing Globin enemies, likely a leftover from recoloring the Globin spritesheet for the new enemies, as both they and Gazing Globins share the same spritesheet.
Unused Drowned Hive Face#
Image file: \gfx\monsters\afterbirth\022.001_drownedhive.png
An unused Mulligoon-esque face for the Drowned Hive enemy. The Hive enemy from the base game has a similar unused sprite.
Unused Brownie Expression#
Image file: \gfx\bosses\afterbirth\brownie.png
Just an unused facial expression for Brownie.
Frail's Spinning Head#
Image file: \gfx\bosses\afterbirth\boss_thefrail.png
Like the skeletal version of The Frail, the normal version also has sprites for its head in all directions. However, it never uses the attack that uses the sprites.
Miscellaneous Unused Hush Sprites#
Image file: \gfx\bosses\afterbirth\boss_hush.png
There are some other unused sprites for Hush, mainly for its face.
Skinless Hush#
Image file: \gfx\bosses\afterbirth\boss_hush_skinless.png
A really unfinished sprite sheet for a skinless Hush boss. This was originally stated by Edmund to be "a red herring for dataminers.". But Tyrone Rodriguez later showed concept art for a skinless Hush phase of the fight that was later scrapped. Edmund would later confirm that. In Afterbirth+, using the debug console allows you to spawn Skinless Hush. It he has no AI other than sliding around when you hit it.
Grid Objects#
Early Tinted Rocks#
Afterbirth continues to have early tinted rock graphics, even adding a new recolored sprite for Burning Basement.
These textures were removed in Repentance and replaced with spiked rock debris.
Burning Basement |
Flooded Caves |
Dank Depths |
Unused Tinted Obstacles#
Sprites for Tinted Obstacles still remain in Afterbirth, and have been added to the sheets for some of the new floors.

Items & Familiars#
Dead Spider Mod#
Image file: \gfx\familiars\familiar_other_94_spidermod.png
The Spider Mod familiar has sprites for it dying. Spider Mod is unable to be damaged in any way, let alone killed, so these go unused.
The Jar#
The extra frames for The Jar were graphically updated, but are still unused.
These frames were removed in Afterbirth+'s Booster Pack 5 update.
Miscellaneous#
Generosity Achievement#
|
|
|
The Steam achievement for Generosity was changed as part of the ARG. Counting the pixels (difficult when the image is a JPEG) in the lines and spaces revealed an Imgur link. The achievement image remained the same after the ARG was over, so the old image is now unused.
Coin#
Image file: \gfx\ui\mainmenu\charactermenu.png
A character select sprite for a large penny, possibly meant for a locked icon for The Keeper. The Keeper is considered a secret character, much like ??? and The Lost, so he does not appear on the character select screen until unlocked, leaving this sprite unneeded.
Half Coin Heart#
Image file: \gfx\ui\ui_hearts.png
A graphic for a half coin heart exists. It is never used, as Keeper's coin hearts can only ever be completely full or empty in the game.
Unused Animations#
Dukie Death Animation#
(Click to Animate.) Dukies have an unused animation for them dying in a similar fashion to Death's Heads. In the final game, Dukies die the way most enemies do: exploding into blood with no unique animation.
Unused Audio#
|
|
This needs some investigation. |
Audio tracks here are either obscured or completely unused.
Unused Dead Womb Layer#
An unused layer for the Dead Womb's track, 'Nativitate.' This implies that it was going to be a bigger floor. This track can be heard in the game's latest DLC, Repentance, either via the Red Key or Blue Key or by entering a Crawl Space with an enemy in the Dead Womb.
Unused Hush Battle Outro#
An oddly unused ending to Hush's fight. It uses normal boss endings instead.
Unused Item Pools#
Afterbirth adds an item pool that remains unused. This pool can technically be enabled by picking up the Chaos item.
Key: Afterbirth, Afterbirth+ Repentance
Source: resources/itempools.xml
challenge#
An item pool containing bomb related items. Removed in Repentance, and its numerical ID used for that DLC's "shellGame" item pool.

Regional Differences#
Title Screen#
The title screen in the Japanese version has a completely different design as a reference to a regional difference in a certain Zelda game.

Secrets#
Aside from the obvious change in language, the Korean secrets (in-game achievements) use different images for Cat Got Your Tongue and Everything is Terrible 2. Interestingly, Ultra Greed has a beard in the Korean versions of these images, much like in early screenshots.
