A solid, technically impressive action game developed by Factor 5 as part of the Turrican series. Semi-notoriously, it had to be downsized from a 6mbit cartridge to a 4mbit one during development, leading to the game being somewhat unfinished. (It's still not as bad as Super Double Dragon in that regard, though.)
It's notably the only Turrican game to receive a release in Japan (at least until Turrican Anthology Vol. I and II came along).
In 2018, a fully restored, though still unfinished, version of the game, entitled Super Turrican: Director's Cut would be released, and was first seen bundled in alongside the sequel with the Super Nt, an FPGA-based reproduction of the SNES developed by Analogue.
Level Skip#
During gameplay, pause and press Right, Left, Down, Right, A, Start to advance to the next level.
The pause input to skip levels is slightly different in Super Turrican: Director's Cut, as you need to press and hold L + R + Select before unpausing.
Sound Test#
While highlighting "Exit" in the Options menu, hold L + R + X + A and then press Start.
Unused Music#
BGM 11 in the Sound Test is an unused boss theme located after the Stage 3 themes, so it can be assumed it was meant to play in Stage 3 if there was at least one boss. This theme can be heard in Mega Turrican for its final boss, or the Stage 3 bosses in its Amiga version named Turrican 3.
Regional Differences#
Seika Logo#
The North American release features an animated Seika logo, played on startup before the game's intro. This would go on to be used for later Seika releases on the SNES.
