Trophy Oddities

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

To do:

  • Need to add more info about every Classic Mode trophy that's relevant to add info about.
  • Reassess the current content. Cosmetic changes to Classic trophies don't necessarily indicate pre-release content.
  • Make the writing like something from an actual article.
  • Many trophies are sourced from other games, tech demos, and official models. Document those (this blog is a starting point).

Fighter Trophy Differences#

The Classic Mode trophies for each fighter are designed to be reminiscent of each character's design and appearance outside of the Super Smash Bros. series. While many of these seem to be modified versions of the models used in-game, some of them may have remnants from earlier versions of the fighter models.

Mario#

Mario's Classic Mode trophy appears to be the model used for the trophy at the start of the game's cinematic intro. His entire model has been slightly squished compared to the final. Notably the final model's realistic textures are replaced by more simplistic textures. Also notable is that some textures that were reused in the final, such as the shoe and eye textures, are slightly different.

Donkey Kong#

Donkey Kong's trophy model is very different from the final. He uses the same simplistic art style as the Mario trophy, with his fur being very different and him lacking any teeth. The eye texture remains the same as in the final, with his nose being slightly stretched wide. His tie also has less detail.

Modeling-wise his entire body, aside from his head (only removing his hair twirl from the final), hands, and feet, has been completely redone in the final.

Luigi#

Pretty much contains almost the same differences as Mario other than having no stretched proportions and having similar eye textures to the final.

Trophy

Ness#

Uses the same simplistic art style, along with some differences. The pants have the same color as the blue stripes of the shirt and his hat button is colored red. Ness' eyes also don't have the blue gradient at the bottom.

Because of the simplistic art style, his backpack has way less detail texturing-wise.

Samus#

Samus, while not attaining the same art style as the others, is based off of her NES design, rather than her SNES one like in the final model. As such, she contains a lot of differences in her design, such as a different color palette and a different upper and lower armor design.

Captain Falcon#

Contains slight color differences and is missing the blue falcon logo on the back.

Zelda#

Has different eye textures, a higher detailed dress, differently shaped ears, and some color differences throughout the model.

Sheik#

A pretty different-looking model. All of the colors are less saturated, her hair is completely different, along with her eye textures being slightly different.

Trophy

Link's model is slightly different overall. He has different textures for his face and clothing folds. Some parts of his model also have slight color changes.

Jigglypuff#

Only difference is the eye texture.

Rigged Trophies#

Several trophies are fully rigged.

Reused Models#

Yoshi Mario Party 4#

The Classic Mode Yoshi trophy contains an earlier version of the Yoshi model used in Mario Party 4, predating the game by almost a year.
Compared to the Mario Party 4 Model, it has a smaller nose, higher poly eyes and some differences of the topology around the eyes. The model also uses a texture map for each material, instead of a texture atlas like in Mario Party 4, resulting in higher-quality textures for the Melee model.

Filenames#

Meowth#

The filename for the Meowth trophy is suffixed with an R, which is otherwise used internally to designate the trophies for playable fighters. Combined with its trophy model being rigged, as well as Melee being the only entry in the series to not include Meowth as a Poké Ball summon, this could imply that Meowth was at one point considered to be a fighter.

Ryota Hayami#

The game has files to load different Ryota Hayami trophies depending on region, as TyWaveRace.dat and TyWvRcUs.dat. Despite this, both files contain identical trophy models.
