Much of the dialogue in the Sonic Generations remaster was rewritten by Ian Flynn, writer for the Archie and IDW comic series, Sonic Frontiers, and Shadow Generations. The rewrites range anywhere from tiny to huge, with some scenes receiving only minor tweaks and others getting significant overhauls.

Script/Text Changes#

Cutscenes#

The only scenes that didn't have their dialogue rewritten in any capacity are You Got a Chaos Emerald!, Classic Sonic's versions of Rescuing Blaze, Rescuing Vector, and Rescuing Charmy, and Trapped.

Abducted Friends#

Tails: Sonic! What's that!? What's it doing?

Sonic: Hey, not cool!

Tails: Help us, Sonic!

Tails: Sonic! What is that!? What's it doing?

Sonic: Hey! Those are my friends!

Tails: Help us, Sonic!

The first few lines were tweaked slightly.

Rescuing Tails#

Tails: Thanks Sonic, I thought I was dead! Floating without a body in a black limbo! I'm going to have nightmares for weeks.

Tails: Thanks, Sonic! That was awful! I couldn't tell where I was or what had happened. Like I was trapped in a nightmare!

Sonic: Well, you're safe now. That's what's important.

Tails' dialogue upon being rescued was completely rewritten, and Sonic now responds to him.

Two Sonics#

Sonic: Is it me, or is that place we were just in awfully familiar? Tails: Not to me, but this place looked like something sucked all the life and color out of it. Totally strange.

Sonic: No stranger than rescuing genies in magic books, or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park. I'm more concerned about finding our friends.

Tails: Hey Sonic. I saw something over there in the distance... like buildings, but they look weird!

Sonic: That might be a good place to check out! I'll be back soon!

Tails: Wow! You weren't kidding when you said soon! I thought you already left! Hmm...

Sonic: Is it just me, or does Green Hill look different?

Tails: This isn't South Island, and all the color and life's been drained from it. Totally strange.

Sonic: Eh, no stranger than fighting evil genies or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park. Right now we should focus on finding our friends.

Tails: We can start over there. That skyline looks familiar, but I can't be sure.

Sonic: That's as good a lead as any, Tails! Back in a flash!

Tails: Wow! That was crazy, Sonic. You weren't kidding! It's like you never left. Hmm...

Sonic and Tails' post-Green Hill exchange was rewritten to make it so that that they both recognize Green Hill.

Are We in the Past?#

Tails: Sonic!

Sonic: Tails!

Tails: This Chemical Plant feels familiar. I'd never forget a smell like this! And that pink water makes me really nervous for some reason.

Sonic: You're right, Tails. This place is giving me déjà vu all over again!

Tails: Sonic!

Sonic: Tails!

Tails: This is definitely the Chemical Plant, but we're not remotely on West Side Island. Did that monster do this?

Sonic: We'll figure it out later. Our friends come first!

Sonic and Tails now both recognize Chemical Plant, rather than merely finding it familiar.

Rescuing Amy#

Amy: Thank you, Sonic. Wow, you look younger every day! What's your secret?	Amy: You saved me, Sonic! I have always thought that you were cute, but did you get cuter?

Amy's dialogue was completely rewritten.

Modern

Amy: You saved me, Sonic. I was afraid I'd never be able to flirt with you again.

Amy: You saved me, Sonic! I'll be sure to return the favor next time around!

Sonic: Not really worrying about that right now, Amy.

Amy's dialogue was rewritten to make her crush on Sonic less obvious, and Sonic now responds to her.

Rescuing Knuckles#

Classic

Knuckles: Thanks, Sonic. You did a good job back there. Hey, did you gain weight?	Knuckles: Thanks, Sonic. Now then, tell me - where's the rest of my island?

Knuckles' dialogue was rewritten seemingly to avoid coming across as fatphobic... but Classic Sonic's response animation wasn't adjusted, making it seem as if Knuckles is implying he ate Angel Island.

Modern

Knuckles: Thanks for the help. Not that I needed it. But it's good to have my sanctuary back!

Knuckles: Thanks for the help. Not that I needed it. Now let's get some payback on that monster!

Sonic: Ha! Get in line, Knuckle-head. Alright!

The last sentence of Knuckles' dialogue was replaced, while - act surprised - Sonic now responds to him.

Through the Glass#

Classic Eggman: It's the last look you'll get before I close your eyes forever! Hoo hoo hoo!	Classic Eggman: It's the last thing you'll see in this world! Ho ho ho ho!

Classic Eggman's dialogue was slightly condensed. Otherwise, this scene's dialogue remains identical.

Two of Me#

Modern Sonic: I can't believe there's two of me.

Classic Tails: I think I've figured it out.

Modern Tails: Yeah, me too.

Classic Tails: Doubles of us...

Modern Tails: Places and enemies from our past...

Classic and Modern Tails: We're traveling through time and space!

Modern Sonic: How did this happen?

Modern Tails: I think it's got something to do with that big *thing* that just kidnapped Eggman.

Classic Tails: It sounds like the same thing that kidnapped your friends. I mean, our friends. You know what I mean.

Modern Tails: There it is!

Classic Tails: Where'd it go?

Modern Sonic: We need to find that thing, and fast!

Modern Sonic: Ha! Couldn't have done it better myself.

Classic Tails: This confirms it.

Modern Tails: It sure does!

Classic Tails: Older versions of us...

Modern Tails: Places and enemies from our past?

Classic and Modern Tails: We're traveling through time, Sonic!

Modern Sonic: Without the Time Stones?

Modern Tails: It's like that big thing that kidnapped Eggman can consume time!

Classic Tails: And then it looks like it dragged your friends here. I mean "our friends." You know what I mean.

Modern Tails: There it is!

Classic Tails: Where'd it go?

Modern Sonic: We need to track it down, and fast!

A majority of the dialogue was rewritten, although some lines remain the same. Instead of directly asking how they're time traveling, Sonic mentions the Time Stones, referencing Sonic CD.

Rescuing Cream#

Classic

Cream: Thanks, Sonic. Hey, is it me, or did you get a new haircut?	Cream: Thank you, Mr. Sonic! Oh, did you get a new haircut?

Cream now refers to Sonic as "Mr. Sonic", how she refers to him in other Sonic media.

Modern

Cream: Thanks for saving me, Sonic. It was scary in the dark, but I tried to be brave.

Cream: Thank you for saving me, Mr. Sonic. It was so scary, but I tried to be really brave!

Sonic: You did great, kiddo!

The same change was made to Modern Sonic's variant, and Sonic now responds to her.

Rescuing Rouge#

Classic

Rouge: Thanks buddy! That thing that snatched me was like nothing I've ever seen before. Watch out. Come to think of it, you're nothing like the Sonic I've seen before!	Rouge: Thank you, Blue. That thing that grabbed me was like nothing I've ever seen before. Watch out. Come to think of it, you're looking nothing like I remember, either.

Rouge now refers to Classic Sonic as Blue instead of buddy. The word "snatched" was also changed to say "grabbed", and the last sentence was slightly rewritten.

Modern

Rouge: Thanks, Big Blue! That's the first time I've ever been stolen.

Sonic: You're a real gem, Rouge.

Rouge's dialogue remains the same, while Sonic now responds like in every other Modern rescue scene.

Restoring the World#

Modern Tails: So I think we've pieced together more of what's happening... and it's not good.

Classic Tails: When that thing goes through time it tears space apart, leaving the areas empty and dead and sticking them in this weird white limbo.

Modern Tails: When the Sonics accelerate through time they fix space, returning color and life!

Modern Sonic: Then I guess we have to run like there's no tomorrow, or there won't be a tomorrow!

Modern Tails: OK, so we're pretty sure we've figured things out... and it's pretty dire. Aww.

Classic Tails: That thing keeps jumping back and forth through time, consuming the dimensional energy. And all that's left behind is this lifeless, white void.

Modern Tails: The Sonics are the one constant here. Their speed is restoring space-time!

Modern Sonic: Then I guess we have to run like there's no tomorrow, or there won't be a tomorrow!

Most of the dialogue was rewritten, with only Modern Sonic's final line remaining the same.

Rescuing Espio#

Classic

Sonic Generations	Sonic X Shadow Generations
Espio: Thank you my friend. Beware, for I have looked into the soul of our enemy and I saw only darkness.	Espio: Thank you my friend. Beware, for I have experienced our foe's power and it is pure evil.

The second sentence was rewritten.

Modern

Espio: It takes a mighty foe to trap a Ninja. Be on your guard, Sonic.

Espio: We're facing a dangerous foe, Sonic. Better be on your guard.

Sonic: Sure thing.

Espio's lines were rewritten, and Sonic now responds.

The Dark Monster and the Chaos Emerald#

Classic Tails: You've brought back quite a bit of this world. You're doing great, Sonic!

Modern Tails: You mean, "You're doing great Sonics."

Classic Tails: Right. I may never get used to that.

Modern Sonic: Watch out!

Classic Tails: That monster sure didn't like that Emerald!

Modern Tails: Those things have come in handy in the past. We've already got a couple, but...

Modern & Classic Tails: We need that Emerald!

Classic Tails: Sonic, you should go over there and check it out! I bet you can bring that Chaos Emerald back, just like you brought back our friends!

Modern Tails: And I bet you double we're going to need all seven Emeralds.

Classic Tails: You guys have your work cut out for you!

Modern Sonic: An adventure's no fun if it's too easy.

Classic Tails: You've brought back so much of the world! You're doing great, Sonic!

Modern Tails: You mean, "You're doing great, Sonics."

Classic Tails: Right. I may never get used to that.

Modern Sonic: Watch out!

Classic Tails: Woah, did that emerald just scare off the monster?

Modern Tails: The Chaos Emeralds' powers are miraculous. And we sure could use a miracle...

Modern & Classic Tails: We need that Emerald!

Classic Tails: Sonic, your speed has been able to restore our friends. I bet it can restore the Chaos Emerald to full power too!

Modern Tails: And I bet you double we're going to need all seven Emeralds.

Modern Sonic: You're on!

Classic Tails: You guys have your work cut out for you!

Modern Sonic: An adventure's no fun if it's too easy.

Many lines here were rewritten. Modern Sonic was also given a line when Classic Sonic points at him, saying "You're on!"

Rescuing Blaze (Modern)#

Blaze: As much as I dislike relying on others, I'm grateful for your aid. The creature was beyond my skills.

Sonic: Yeah, this one's tough.

Sonic now responds to Blaze.

Rescuing Vector (Modern)#

Vector: Thanks Sonic! You know, I got a hunch someone or something is controlling that monster.

Sonic: Roger that.

Sonic now responds to Vector.

Rescuing Charmy (Modern)#

Charmy: I was scared because somebody took me, but now I'm free! I'm a free bee, free bee, free bee... wheee!

Sonic: Alright! Just... simmer down, buddy.

Sonic now responds to Charmy.

Eggman Abducted / Eggman Abducted Again#

Modern Tails: Sonic!

Modern Eggman: Oooooh... I can't believe this! I was supposed to beat you this time.

Modern Sonic: Aw, I'm sorry! I didn't get that memo. I beat you every time! No, seriously, we beat this guy every time. It's like it's our job or something!

Modern Tails: What's Eggman even doing here? I thought you said he'd been kidnapped by that big weird thing that sent us all to this place!

Classic Tails: See? He was kidnapped. This is getting stranger all the time.

Modern Tails: Sonic!

Modern Eggman: I recalibrated everything! This was supposed to be my time!

Modern Sonic: Oh please keep dreamin, Egg-head. I beat you every time. No, seriously, we beat him every time. Our score card's flawless.

Modern Tails: Stopping Eggman is always good, but the root of the problem is that monster. Maybe we can call a truce and... ?

Classic Tails: Look! He got your Eggman too! This is getting serious!

Every line except the first was rewritten, and Tails no longer questions Eggman's presence, knowing that it was Classic Eggman who got kidnapped and asking for truce before Modern Eggman were kidnapped soon after. This cutscene was renamed from "Eggman Abducted" in the original to "Eggman Abducted Again" in SXSG, as the cutscene where Classic Eggman is abducted after defeating the Death Egg Robot used the exact same name.

The Final Battle!#

Modern Sonic: Okay, whatever you are. If you want to avoid an embarrassing beat down, you better give up now!

Modern Eggman: You're not in a position to demand anything, you nasty little pincushion!

Modern Tails: Eggman! But, how?

Classic Eggman: He had a little help.

Classic Tails: Dr. Robotnik!

Classic Eggman: Nobody calls me that anymore. If you would be so kind as to explain, gentleman genius Dr. Eggman From The Future.

Modern Eggman: It will be my pleasure, most excellent and efficacious Dr. Eggman Of The Past.

Modern Eggman (voiceover): After my most recent setback, I stumbled upon the primordial form of this unique creation. Which I discovered had amazing abilities even I have never been able to master. It could erase time and space! I then had the brilliant idea to use my discovery to undo my previous defeats!

Modern Eggman: In order to perfect it, I needed the help of somebody as smart as I am. The only person that smart... is me!

Classic Eggman: Oh, you are too kind, my dear future self! And I was happy to help!

Modern Eggman: I captured your friends, flinging them through time to bait my traps.

Modern Tails: But the more your monster tears through time, the more damage you do to the world!

Modern Eggman: The world? I'm going to own the world when I'm finished with Sonic! HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO HOO

!

Classic Eggman: Wow. Will I really get that crazy?

Modern Eggman: Heheh! We'll see who's crazy after I destroy both Sonics... forever!

Classic Eggman: You mean after we destroy them.

Modern Eggman: Less arguing. More destroying.

Modern Sonic: Destroy me? You and what mustache? I beat you all the time by myself, and now there's two of me!

Modern Eggman: Then I'll have twice as much fun defeating you!

Modern Sonic: Keep moving!

Modern Eggman: Move all you want! I'm still going to stomp you into a blue jelly. That was just to soften you up. Now it's time to meet your doom.

Amy: You can do it, Sonic!

Knuckles: Come on, Sonic. Smack him!

Modern Eggman: Ugh, not you!

Shadow: You've got this, Sonic!

Rouge: You can win, Sonic!

Classic Eggman: Who are they?

Modern Eggman: They are insignificant!

Vector: You've got the power, Sonic!

Espio: Focus your spirit!

Charmy: We're with you guys!

Cream: I believe in you, Sonic!

Blaze: Don't give in, Sonic!

Silver: I know you can do this, Sonic!

Classic Tails: You can win, Sonic!

Modern Tails: You always do!

Modern Sonic: Time to scramble some Eggmen, SUPER SONIC STYLE!

Most of this cutscene was rewritten entirely. Notably, Eggman now explicitly references the events of Sonic Colors, and all of Sonic's friends cheering him on were changed to be more unique.

Ending#

Modern Sonic: Still warm. Time travel!

Knuckles: I'll admit, you weren't half bad, Sonic.

Amy: Half bad? Are you kidding? He was all great!

Classic Tails: He collects how many? Wow, where does somebody put all those gold rings?

Modern Tails: You know what? I don't know. I keep forgetting to ask.

Modern Sonic: It was great teaming up with you. Hope you learned a few tricks that'll help you out in the future. I mean the past. You know what I mean! Dude, sweet! And you're only going to get better.

Classic Tails: There's our ride.

Modern Sonic: Hey Sonic! Enjoy your future. It's going to be great!

Modern Sonic: Still warm. Time travel!

Knuckles: I'll admit, you weren't half bad, Sonic.

Amy: Half bad? Are you kidding? He was all great!

Classic Tails: So I have a question for you. Once we're home, you think the timeline will be restored?

Modern Tails: Yep! Just... don't think about it too hard.

Modern Sonic: It was great teaming up with you, er, me. Maybe this'll fast-track you to learning some new tricks in the future. Wait, I mean past. Ugh, time travel's a chore! Dude, sweet! And you're only going to get better.

Classic Tails: There's our portal home.

Modern Sonic: Hey Sonic! Enjoy your future. It's gonna be great!

Miscellaneous#

Amy's Collection Room Profile#

A young, cheerful girl hedgehog, Amy can be a bit obsessed with Sonic. She even claims to be his "girlfriend"!

She's an energetic go-getter who lets nothing get in her way!

A cheerful girl who loves to help others. Sonic inspired her to be her very best!

She's an energetic go-getter; with the help of her Piko-Piko hammer and fortune cards, nothing gets in her way!

Amy's profile in the Collection Room was rewritten to reflect her current characterization, as her obsessive crush on Sonic has been downplayed in Sonic media in the years since Generations was originally released.

Statue #55's Name#

Statue #55 in the Statue Room was changed to rename the small chicken animal from "Cucky" to "Clucky", in line with other recent Classic Sonic media.

Cutscene Changes#

Sonic Generations	Sonic X Shadow Generations

The opening and ending cutscenes involving Sonic's birthday party include various Chao alongside Sonic's friends. The balloons were also changed, now looking shinier and more transparent, and the blue balloon being layered behind the yellow and red balloons.

At Sonic's birthday party in the intro, Sonic is no longer pushing back Amy, and she is now holding a plate with cupcakes to give to Sonic.

When being kidnapped by the Time Eater, Classic Eggman can now be seen in the orb as opposed to being obscured.

In the ending cutscene, Silver is now holding a chili dog.

In the same scene, Knuckles is simply pushed backwards by Amy rather than being slammed into a nearby tree. His reaction is similarly changed involving a brief display of surprise followed by a smug grin. The shot of him sliding down the tree after getting punched was removed entirely.

The reappearing Time Hole in the ending does not show Green Hill.
