Final Demos

This is a sub-page of Sonic Robo Blast 2/Archived Versions.

To do:

  • Document versions 1.08 and 1.09.2 in the Revisional Differences section.
  • The entire Revisional Differences section is a mess. It needs a complete overhaul.

Revisional Differences#

SRB2 Tournament 2003#

This version was a multiplayer only version of Sonic Robo Blast 2, made to test out the Master Server and the new multiplayer content planned for Final Demo.

It was exclusively built for SAGE 2003, and it was the first version to include multiple weapons to the match mode.

It also added the Chaos game mode that was later removed in version 1.09.

Despite being multiplayer only, some work on Single Player features had already been done by this stage, as well as an early version of Spring Hill Zone. Also present in this build are graphics for the new intro cutscene as well as the post-credits scene. This version was the first release of SRB2 to feature digital music, as previous versions had been reliant on MIDI playback for their music. This had the side effect of dramatically increasing the file size for future versions of SRB2. While this version featured no MIDIs, in later releases MIDIs would be included with the game to supplement the digital music, both for compatibility and for preference.

(The name is a parody of Unreal Tournament.)

Final Demo 1.01#

First released in June 2003, this version was intended to be the last demo before the final game came out.

Later, there were so many patches for Final Demo that in 2.0, the idea of "demos" would be scrapped. This demo included the only three finished zones that existed at that point - Greenflower, Techno Hill, and Castle Eggman.

Castle Eggman

This version added an intro based upon The Games Factory version's intro, the Special Stages were made easier, and emblems were added. Levels which could could only unlocked with emblems were also added.

These are:

  • Mario Koopa Blast (a 3 act zone replacing Mario Goomba Blast)
  • Spring Hill Zone (The first NiGHTS stage)

Tails now had the ability to carry others around, and Super Sonic was also re-added in this version.

This version also added an alternative gameplay mode called "Adventure Mode". This mode gave Sonic the Light Dash and Homing Attack moves from Sonic Adventure 2, and Tails' flight could be controlled by just holding the jump button down, as in Sonic Adventure.

An unlockable stage called "SA Example Zone" was included to showcase the mode, with the developers intending to demonstrate how SRB2 could easily emulate official 3D Sonic games of the time, but purposely chose a more classic approach to gameplay. This was not communicated anywhere within the demo though, and ironically the mode ended up becoming very popular among the younger modding community.

Adventure Mode was later removed in version 2.0 due to changes with SRB2's character system.

SA Example Zone

Zim (from the TV series Invader Zim) was added as a character, with a multiplayer Match Zone. Zim played mostly identically to Knuckles, but couldn't spin and lacked many animations. Both Zim and the map he came with were removed in 1.09.4.

Several multiplayer stages were also added.

Zim Base Zone

Final Demo 1.04#

Final Demo 1.01 was patched 3 times on the same day to fix bugs, resulting in the Version number reaching 1.04. The content included was identical.

Final Demo 1.08#

Intended to be the final patch for Final Demo, this version was notable for adding SOC support in the game, allowing mods to be far more complex.

Sonic's speed thok ability was restricted to once per jump, and progress on proper sprites for Knuckles began.

Two experimental game modes were also added, named "Sonic Golf" and "Hockey" that were both were removed in 1.09 due to being nonfunctional.

Final Demo 1.09#

This version added various things like the completion of Super Sonic's sprites, and an easter egg where you could play an unfinished version of Red Volcano Zone Act 1. This version marked the removal of Chaos mode, which was removed due to its low popularity.

This version also added several multiplayer maps that originated from the Official Level Design Contest.

Final Demo 1.09.2#

Final Demo 1.09.2 was a patch for 1.09, previously being tested with some Beta releases on the SRB2 Message Board labelled as 1.09.1. This version mainly added new editing features, as well as adding Super Sonic's theme to the game, replacing the previous placeholder music. 1.09.2 also featured some changes for Netgames and Adventure Mode, namely giving Knuckles his multi-glide ability, which he previously had in the base game before 1.09.

Final Demo 1.09.4#

This update, despite seemingly being a patch for 1.09, was a massive content update for SRB2. It removed everything that would make the game look unprofessional (such as Zim and Zero Ring), but added a lot of things too, such as map editing being made more extensive. Now you were able to save screenshots of the game at any time, Circuit mode was included, Mario Koopa Blast was completed, and a Hyper Sonic Easter egg was featured along with an 8th Chaos Emerald (both of which were removed in the next version) Map making was made more complex too, allowing people to make even better mods. This version also added time attack mode.

In February 2008, Final Demo 1.09.4 would receive an additional patch, 1.09.4a, to fix a critical bug related to netgame security. No content was changed outside of this minor bugfix.

Source Code#

In the DSTRINGS.C file from the Final Demo 1.08 through 1.09.4a source code, an unused line of the intro is present which was meant to come after the last used one.

"What are waiting for? The first emerald is ours!" Sonic was about to
run, when he saw a shadow pass over him, he recognized the silloheute
instantly.
"Knuckles!" Sonic said. The echidna stopped his glide and landed
facing Sonic. "What are you doing here?"
He replied, "This crisis affects the Floating Island,
if that explosion I saw is anything to go by."
"If you're willing to help then... let's go!"
