Shivers

Shivers is a game where four of your "friends" lock you in an abandoned and supposedly haunted museum for the night as part of a dare. Unbeknownst to any of you, a pair of teenagers fifteen years ago had snuck in and released the Ixupi, ancient Mayan spirits, who promptly killed the two. And now you must capture them all to survive the night.

Oh, and did we mention this museum was built by a professor who filled the place with puzzles so hard they were too difficult for him to solve when he tried to recapture the Ixupi?

Unused Graphics#

To do:
Rest of the stuff from the cited page by akril15. Mostly the mockups of MS Paint-style puzzles.

Unused Cursors#

Unused

Final

Let's give 'em a hand!!!

Two early versions of the player's cursor. The first cursor uses a hand, rather than the "sword" used in later revisions. This version also lacks a "get up" variation. The second cursor is closer to the final, though it lacks some coloring and is overall less refined.

In Search of the Unexplained's Unused Pages#

Shivers - Pic8347.png
Pages 27 and 28 of Sir Hubert Windlenot's In Search of the Unexplained, which is in the Library, are unused in-game. Trying to flip on the right edge of page 26 closes the book. It is unknown whether an oversight on the part of the developers meant this double-page was not coded in, or whether it was intentionally scrapped (perhaps because it shows numerous completed Ixupi Vessels), either way, it feels like a loss. Without it, you lose a considerable amount of Professor Windlenot's motivations and intentions behind the museum, and why there are puzzles everywhere.

Beth and Merrick's Note#

Early

Unused

Final

I'm pretty sure Merrick's already there.

There are a total of 3 versions of Beth and Merrick's note on the podium (not counting the view of it with the theater behind it). The first is a very early rendition, with all the writing in black and the handwriting of the two switched. The difference between the other two is the color of Merrick's pen. The one in blue-purple ink is assumed to be the one that shows up in-game.

In the Strange Beasts exhibit, the 'Griffin' and 'Unicorn' plaques have an unused version. It seems somebody didn't know the first letter of animal names don't need to be capitalized!

Tombs and Curses Exhibit#

Cut Plaque

Presumed Location

In the Tombs and Curses Exhibit, it seems the coffin in the Curse of Anubis Tomb originally had a plaque.

Now, that's better!

In the Funeral Rites exhibit, this 'Spectacular Coffins' plaque has an unused version (with only minor differences to its text).

Shaman Exhibit#

Cut Plaque

Presumed Location

You've been head-hunted to look at another cut plaque...
Shivers Shaman Hut Entrance.png
...But, hey! A LOT of people must've wronged Professor Windlenot!

In the Shaman exhibit, there's a 'Head-Hunting' plaque that was cut. I can only assume it was meant to go in front of the Shaman Hut, as it's the only location in that exhibit that explicitly features skulls.

Demo Leftovers#

What appear to be screens left over from a demo version of the game. Note that the game was released in September instead of November. It's unknown if there's a way to trigger these in the current game.

Unused Animations#

Marcia Bales Insult#

Where there's a spark, there's a flame (war).

Someone apparently didn't like Marcia Bales, the game's designer.

Unused Ixupi#

This appears to be an animation of the Stone Ixupi in the tower stairs. The backstory has this Ixupi absorb Professor Windlenot's life and escape the museum, long before the game begins. Its art style is very different from the cartoonish look of the used Ixupi, which (after the introduction) are never placed where they would block your movement. It may be leftover promotional material from early in the game's design.

Unused Easter Egg in Fortune Teller Room#

Shivers - View28021.gif
Help! It's a Scary Moose.

In the Fortune Teller room, there's an animation (View 28021), of this moose blowing a raspberry when you try to open the door. The door lines up exactly with that room, but the View is never referenced by any script. My assumption is that it is an Easter Egg was which fully animated, but never scripted.

Unused Music#

Audio

Comments

An unused version of the music that plays in the museum intro movie.

An unused version of the music that plays in the "Secret Entrance" room.

An unused version of the music that plays in the halls. This version is much slower and darker. It's unknown where this would've been used.

Unused Dialogue#

Narrator#

Subtitle

Comments

I wouldn't use that name if I were you!

The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain, also published by Sierra the previous year, would reject player names containing profanity, and something similar may have been planned for Shivers.

Shivers. Available at your local retailer, November '95.

Demo Leftover. Again, the game was released in September, not November.

You can only unlock the secrets of this room by purchasing Shivers... Do you dare?

Demo Leftover.

Shivers... Do you dare enter the Museum of the Strange and Unusual? You might never make it out alive!

Demo Leftover.

You are about to be locked up in the Museum of the Strange and Unusual... Alone! ...Or are you? Only the most fearless dare play, because you may never make it out alive!

Demo Leftover (Alternate Line).

Placeholder Dialogue#

Audio

Comments

A "Sliding Stone" placeholder for the narrator's voice.

You can trigger it after randomly sliding the stones of the labyrinth's door (so before you open this door).

Narrator's voice should have said "You managed to open that door, let's see if you are able to solve this puzzle now." here (because the French version actually says "Vous avez réussi à ouvrir cette porte, voyons maintenant si vous êtes capable de réussir cette énigme.").

Proper English dialogue is not present in the game's files.

Oddities#

The Padlocked Front Door#

Oddity #1 (Library Doorway)

Oddity #2 (Tower Room CCTV)

Unused (Padlocked Front Door)

Used (Un-Padlocked Front Door)

Shivers - Library Doorway To Main Entry Hall.jpeg Shivers - Scanner Image of Museum Foyer.jpeg
Shivers - Pic9500.png
The place is padlocked?! I can't get out?!
Shivers - Pic9480.png

The Front Door to the Museum is locked in-game, presumably by key. However, that wasn't always the intention! There are unused renders which show the front door's handles stuck together by padlock in the Main Entry Hall. However, due to oversights on the part of whoever created graphics for the doorway leading back to the Main Entry Hall from the Library, and the black and white scanner image of the Main Entry Hall on the CCTV in the Tower Room, the door is seen clearly padlocked in both images. Presumably, old renders were used from back when the door actually WAS padlocked, and they ended up never being changed!

Unused Developer Text#

Printf Message in Room 6110#

Shivers - Printf Message in Room 6110.jpeg

If you try and force yourself (e.g: using ScummVM's debugger console) into Room 6110, which is an unused angle from Professor Windlenot's Office... It's seems a developer REALLY didn't want that angle being used.

Unused Preferences Dialog#

DLOG 1000 in the Mac version is inaccessible to end users.

Invisible Document#

On the Mac CD, there's an invisible Read Me for Phantasmagoria called PDoco.txt.
