Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is an HD remake of, you guessed it, Serious Sam: The First Encounter on an improved Serious Sam 2 engine with modern textures. However, there are quite a few textures (mostly indoors) that are just enlarged versions of Serious Sam 1 art with no filters, which kinda cheapens the whole experience.

Unused Graphics#

AK-47#

A texture for an AK-47 and a model for its magazine can be found in the game's files. This is a leftover from Serious Sam 3, when that game still had an AK-47 instead of the final game's M29. The model was originally made for TEOR and you can see a screenshot of that game's AK-47 model in this tech demo to a magazine.

Default Menu Image#

"Serious Sam 3", eh?

The game has a default menu image for levels that don't have their own. This is never shown in the game because all of the levels have their own unique menu image.

What's interesting about the default menu image is that it appears to be an earlier iteration of the Gathering of Gods level from the Jewel of the Nile expansion using assets from The First Encounter. The text "Serious Sam 3 preproduction version" is present on the upper left-hand corner.

HD TSE Leftovers#

Early versions of HD TSE weapons can be found in the Xbox 360 version. The Steam version removed and replaced them with the final models in later updates. You can view them in game by replacing other weapon .ep's with the ones you want to see and renaming them accordingly.

Icons#

The Chainsaw & Flamer use icons from Serious Sam Xbox, while Sniper & Serious Bomb use icons made during Serious Sam 3's early development.

Chainsaw#

Uses a different model & animations closer to the one from Classic.

Flamer#

SSHD EarlyFlamer.png

Uses model from Classic with added normal/gloss maps. It is positioned closer to the screen centre & has an actual firing animation, which was removed in HD TSE

Sniper#

Perhaps most strange of all, the sniper uses an assault rifle model from Croteam's cancelled military game TEOR, with unique animations and a faster fire rate than HD TSE's sniper. The zoomed-in scope textures are from Serious Sam 2.

Serious Bomb#

Same as in HD TSE, but the explosion sound is from Serious Sam 2.

Serious Sam 2 Leftovers#

Graphics#

Several leftovers from Serious Sam 2 can be found in the game's models. All of the Serious Sam 2-exclusive powerup (1up, Serious Score, etc.) and treasure models are in the game, along with the game's title and publisher logo textures. Strangely, the 1up model uses the model from Serious Sam HD, not the SS2 one, because it got overwritten by the new model.

The treasure items and 1up models are used in the Coin-Op co-op mode of Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, where they're used to get extra points and to give the team a free extra life, respectively.

Animations#

Biped_Movement#

The version of Biped_Movement.ans located at All.gro\Content\SeriousSamHD\Models\Animations is from Serious Sam 2. The version the player uses is at All.gro\Content\SeriousSamHD\Presets\Animations. Below is a comparison.

Unused Models#

Woman#

Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all!

An unused model named "woman" can be found in the game's files. It is the Harpy's middle and lower body, along with her legs. This is used in Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter as the trigger for the "mooning Harpy" secret in the final level.

Unused Animations#

Harpy Death#

XxXFaLlEn AnGeLXxX

Harpies normally gib no matter how they are killed, however the model file shows the original death animations are included in the Harpy's animations.

Unused Areas#

Hatshepsut Pit#

The unused pit in Hatshepsut found in the original game is still in the HD remake. This is because the game's level architecture is a direct port from the original games, and it's likely the team forgot to remove it while they were prettying the levels up.
