Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

This article has a talk page!

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

To do:

  • Pretty much everything along with fixing the format of the page.
  • Prototypes exist. Needs to be documented.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters is the first game in the series on the PSP. Despite initially positive critical reception, it still receives flak from diehard fans of the series, and that's not just because the game's name is quite possibly the worst innuendo of all time.

A PS2 port followed a year later to mediocre reviews, mainly thanks to it having little to no improvements over the PSP version.

garbageCan Ratchet

Yes

SP

A garbage can skin, exclusive to the Japanese version. However, its files are present on every version of the game. You can apply this skin in both the North American and European versions by replacing another skin with this one in the game's files.

Unused Level#

There is a level named TEMPLATE.MB.WAD in the lobby directory of the game's files. The level has no minimap or reveal map data.

This level is where Ratchet is while the player is in the multiplayer menu.

Cut Weapon#

Singularity Gun

  • Singularity Gun
  • Singularity Gun V.2
  • Singularity Gun V.3
  • N2 Singularity Launcher

Its last level was called Singularity Cannon in pre-release builds (Demo and Online Public Beta).

Despite this weapon being ultimately cut from the game, the developers wrote weapon descriptions for it.

Only recently legalized (on some planets), the Singularity Gun surrounds enemies and compacts them into n-space - never to be heard from again.
Utilizing self-recouperating warp conduit loops, the N2 Singularity Launcher compounds the implosive energy generated between the n-space layers, magnifies them, and repulses them back into real-space in the form of a powerful explosion.

Demo reel pre-release footage#

The demo reel video from the PSP version, which can be found in the file PSP_GAME/USRDIR/CLIPS/TRACKREEL.PMF is longer than its PS2 counterpart, and contains footage taken from a point in development with some differences, between the timestamps 0:08.40 - 0:12 and 0:41.50 - 0:48.

It shows Ratchet on the skyboard track on planet Kalidon with

  • the text "INFO MODE" in the bottom right corner
  • the opponent NPC being at the center of the map in the upper right corner, and having their coordinates printed alongside the dot on the map
  • the fuel pickups and boost pads looking different than in the final release

The PS2 counterpart of this demo reel, which can be found in the file VID/ATTRACT.BIK contains only a single frame of the PSP counterpart's pre-release footage.

Inside Clank unused level loading transition#

There are 4 distinct level loading transitions:

  • 0 - Ratchet unconscious
  • 2 - Ship / Giant Clank / Hoverboard
  • 3 - Ratchet using the Shrink Ray
  • 4 - Ratchet falling down

(Source: ImJustATester)

During regular gameplay, when Ratchet shrinks himself to repair Clank, level transition no. 3 is used when loading the "Inside Clank" level.

Forcing the transition no. 2 shows Ratchet's ship flying into a planet-sized Clank head floating in outer space.

Unused Galactic Map locations#

The levels, which are accessed by other means than choosing their entries in the Galactic Map, can be selected there, revealing:

  • their unused Galactic Map sprite (on PSP they are different than the ship transition loading screen sprites)
  • their ship transition sprite (on PS2 they are shared with the ship transition loading screen sprites).

Assuming being on Ryllus, board Ratchet's spaceship to open the Galactic Map, have Pokitaru selected as the destination and use the following codes:

Additionally, the High Impact Games Treehouse is selectable too, albeit with the Galactic Map sprite itself featured instead of a location sprite (only on PS2, the PSP version crashes the very moment it tries to draw the map).

This presence is the only location, where the word "California" can be seen in the PS2 version.

Oddities#

Plumber#

While the Plumber only makes a cameo as a floating vision on the Dreamtime level, the game considers him an enemy, as the red target indicating threat appears over him, although hitting him once causes him to fade away, even counting for weapon EXP.
