Quest for Fame (Windows)

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically:

  • A bunch of the charts were modified in V2. Making sense of the chart format is probably a good idea
  • Figure out how to convert the BCP image format used by the game. The unseen developer faces can also be found here

Quest for Fame was one of two expansion CDs for Ahead's point-and-click adventure/early rhythm game hybrid Welcome to West Feedback, and inarguably the most well-known of them. Rock your way to fame while groovin' to (mostly) Aerosmith tunes!

Hidden Developer Screens#

Questforfame-virtualmusic.png

Clicking on the "VIRTUAL MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT" text on the first three pages of the credits screen redirects the player to a screen featuring staff members from Virtual Music. Furthermore, clicking on several developer names on those pages reveal graphics of their faces on the top left corner of the screen. This easter egg is not present in the original release of the game.

Revisional Differences#

Three different versions of Quest for Fame were released between 1994 and 1997.

Overall#

  • The original version only has support for the Virtual Guitar controller; later releases added compatibility with the Virtual Pick, which was bundled with the game.
  • By the time the IBM version was released, Ahead had changed its name to Virtual Music Entertainment. This is reflected in the opening sequence...

  • The original release has two menu designs. One is seen after booting the game, and the other by clicking the "MENU" button during gameplay. Later releases only have a single menu design.

  • The original release has an option in the boot main menu which instructs the player on the Virtual Guitar peripheral. This is absent from later releases.

  • The original release has six difficulty settings, which was decreased to 3 in later versions.

Gameplay#

  • The original version has a reputation score system, which is absent from later releases.
  • The Pause and Menu buttons were redrawn, while Hints (which gives the player hints on how to proceed) and Sound (volume and effect adjustment) buttons were added.

Songs#

The original version has three exclusive songs, Last Child, Sweet Emotion, and Walk This Way. These were replaced in later releases by Dude, Livin' on the Edge, and Love in an Elevator. Barring the Bedroom, the stage availability of these songs is as follows, sorted by the CD in which they appear in-game:

Nail That Riff#

  • The Biker Rock (Born to be Wild) and Roadhouse (What's Your Name) riffs in the Roadhouse episode originally used samples of the original songs, which were re-recorded in later releases. Furthermore, the Roadhouse Groove and Riff samples were swapped. Due to rising copyright concerns, audio comparisons are not available.
  • All the riffs in the Blues episode were re-recorded.

  • As a result of the songlist changes noted above, half of the riffs heard in the Aerosmith episode were changed. Furthermore, while the audio cannot be uploaded due to copyright concerns, the original release used cuts of the original tracks instead of re-recorded versions specifically for this minigame, with the exception of Walk on Water, which appears to be an earlier version or a specially-made one using the song's stems.
