This is a sub-page of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.
Portraits#
Mama (or Igglybuff's mother) uses unique variants of Wigglytuff's portraits with additional eyelashes. Variants were made of all but one of Wigglytuff's portraits, but only half of them are used in-game.
Animations#
Hero/Partner#
The hero or partner tripping from a standing position. This animation type was unused already in Time and Darkness, but the new hero and partner candidates in Sky received their own variants regardless.
Igglybuff#
Igglybuff stumbling with (extremely subtle) tears in his eyes. It appears to accompany his collapsing animation seen at the end of Special Episode 2.
Sableye#
An unused northwest-facing variant of Sableye barely missing Dusknoir's punch, likely made for redundancy. Sableye uses unique sprites for both left and right directions due to its asymmetrical character design.
Dungeon Tiles#
|
|
To do: |
As in the original pair of games, some dungeon tilesets include alternative ground tiles that will never generate as part of a dungeon floor.

Object Sprites#
|
|
|
|
|---|---|---|---|
Unique footprint sprites intended for the Exploration Team badge seen on the file select menu's top screen. While earlier versions of these sprites were previously used in Explorers of Time and Darkness, all badge footprints notably received a shading overhaul in Explorers of Sky. The footprint sprite seen on the file select menu matches the current hero species, but Meowth, Munchlax and their evolutions were removed as hero candidates in Sky, becoming solely available as partner candidates instead.
Separate black footprint sprites for these Pokémon are still in use during the Sentry Duty minigame.
d50p11a1.wan
A section of a cave entrance intended for background D50P11A, the entrance to Spacial Cliffs in Special Episode 5. The same entrance is present within the background itself. This sprite was presumably intended for layering in front of Grovyle and Dusknoir while they enter or exit the cave, but this is not shown in a cutscene.
p21p02a2.wan
A section of a cave entrance intended for background P21P02A, which is used during a cutscene in Special Episode 2. Just like the previous sprite, this graphic is already part of the background. This sprite was presumably intended for layering in front of Igglybuff and Armaldo while they exit the cave, but they're already outside at the start of the cutscene.
v37p01a1.wan
Light effects intended for background V37P01A, the distant view of Sky Peak.
The file includes 3 other tiny frames which are not assigned to either animation.
v37p02a1.wan
Gracidea petals intended for background V37P02A, the view of Sky Peak's summit. While this particular file is unused, all sprites were repurposed through s13p02a3.wan used by background S13P02A, the view of Treasure Town seen during the game's intro. However, the animation itself is entirely different.
One frame included within the file is unassigned, but a copy of this sprite is used by the intro scene.
Backgrounds#
S05P03A#
This unique map background was previously used in the intro cutscene to Explorers of Time and Darkness.
Time and Darkness Menu Backgrounds#
Time and Darkness used different backgrounds for the main menu. Those older backgrounds are still present within Explorers of Sky. They can be found in data/BACK/s09pXXa.bgp by browsing the files, substituting XX with numbers 01 to 03. Numbers 04 to 10 contain the new backgrounds used in Sky.
Partially Unused#
S13P08A#
The intro cutscene briefly uses the upper end of this room, but the land bridge remains entirely out of view. Both the size and layout of the full room are remarkably similar to S05P03A, suggesting a closer recreation of the intro cutscene from Time and Darkness may have been planned at one point.
Background Tiles#
p19p02a1.bpa
This file, found only in the Japanese version of the game, contains unused and animated water tiles intended for Armaldo's Shelter. The tiles are represented here using the room's Palette 11, which normally isn't used.
2 of the tiles contain a few static and out-of-place brown pixels; they appear to be a perfect match to the bottom of the leftmost wooden board seen in the background's second layer, which has been ever so slightly cut off. The following mockup has been made using this wooden board as a guide.
