Unused Dungeons

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: The following:

  • There are quite a few more dungeons to sift through.
  • Verify the Wonder Mail S passwords, just in case. Make sure your save meets the requirements! The US passwords have already been checked.

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Would be nice to have the complete dungeon data listed here, like how the Rescue Team page does it, rather than just a short summary.

Through a Wonder Mail S exploit, it is possible to unlock and enter some of the unused dungeons in the game. Keep in mind that the unlocks are permanent once the request has been opened and the game has subsequently been saved. Use the passwords or generator at your own risk!

To use the passwords on this page, the player first has to acquire the Secret Rank by clearing Crevice Cave, and has to complete Special Episode 1, "Bidoof's Wish". Once both requirements are met, enter one of the passwords, continue the game and open the challenge request. It will appear to unlock Star Cave, but will unlock a specified unused dungeon instead. Afterwards, suspend or delete the request, as entering the dungeon will otherwise lead the player to a fight with Jirachi in what looks like a copy of Star Cave Pit.

All normally inaccessible dungeons will have a placeholder mission objective of "Dummy" and will send the player back to the Crossroads when the last floor is complete.

Test Dungeon#

The Test Dungeon hidden within Time and Darkness still exists within Sky, and appears to have been used for testing numerous new-to-Sky features by the developers. It uses the unique map coordinates of "368, 152".

This dungeon has a unique 100% chance to spawn hidden stairs on the floor, leading to a Secret Bazaar or a Secret Room. The visuals also got a slight update in the form of a new steam effect that's present on all 3 floors, which was similarly added to appropriate pre-existing dungeons such as Steam Cave and Dark Crater.

Most notably, this is the only dungeon in the game that allows the player to switch leaders within it, a scrapped feature that was previously available in Rescue Team. It can be done by selecting the otherwise unseen "Leader" option in the Team menu, and uses a nearly identical animation to the unused Switch Box item.

Action Replay#

Alternatively, the Test Dungeon can be accessed by using the following Action Replay code to unlock all regular dungeons. It will be the first dungeon listed on the selection screen, before Beach Cave.

Demo Dungeons#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Sometimes it is possible to enter the dungeons without the script debug mode; figure out how exactly the check works.

Explorers of Sky introduced the ability to send out three (depending on region) slightly different demo versions of the game to other DS systems by using DS Download Play. The six demos each correspond to one of six unique dungeons that are not normally accessible in the full game.

While the dungeons can be unlocked in the full game through the Wonder Mail S exploit, they do not pass a check in the Crossroads script, making it impossible to enter them without cheats. This can be circumvented by enabling the script debug mode, through using the following Action Replay code:

JP

NA

EU

022E09D0 E3500001

022DF330 E3500001

022DFC70 E3500001

A few notes:

  • All of them share the map coordinates of "300, 300". These coordinates are placeholders assigned only to unused dungeons or locations that are never visible on the map.
  • All of the demo dungeons use Cave and Side Path as their theme in the demos. In the full game, they instead use the same randomly cycling selection of tracks that are normally used by Zero Isle South. (Sealed Ruin, Brine Cave, Drenched Bluff and Upper Steam Cave)
  • Little Plains and Hidden Shopkeeper Village use dungeon tilesets that are not normally seen anywhere in the full game. These are tilesets #78 and #89 respectively, and were previously used by Tiny Woods and Buried Relic B1F-B20F in Rescue Team.
  • In the full game, Trial Forest uses a light mist effect which cannot be seen in its demo. This is tied to the tileset used by the dungeon (#11) and can also be seen in Forest Path and Sky Peak 1st Station Pass.

Luminous Spring and Hot Spring#

If one goes to Luminous Spring or Hot Spring before they can normally access it (like using a cheat code to unlock all dungeons), instead of going to the normal area they will be brought to a dungeon with that name and the same Pokémon/palette as Temporal Spire. The dungeon is only 5 floors deep.

Dark Wasteland's Unused Floors#

A Monster House in Dark Wasteland, which cannot normally be encountered within this dungeon.

Dark Wasteland is a rather unusual dungeon visited during Special Episode 5; it uses an entirely unique tileset and music track, yet is also only 4 floors long, making it the shortest dungeon in the game. 12 more unassigned-yet-fully-featured floors exist within the game's data, and this is the only used dungeon in the game with such a distinction. It is possible to reinstate the unused floors to the Dark Wasteland dungeon group by using the following Action Replay code:

JP

NA

EU

2209F994 00000010

2209E5C0 00000010

2209EB44 00000010

An alternative method is to patch the ROM's byte 0xA3994 (JP), 0xA25C0 (US) or 0xA2B44 (EU) from 04 to 10. This can also be done through SkyTemple by using the "Fix Dungeon Errors" patch, although it's worth pointing out that there is no evidence that the unused floors were dummied out unintentionally.

Characteristics unique to the unassigned floors include Drapion spawns replacing Skorupi and Shiftry from 8F onwards, and Monster Houses having a chance to appear from 6F onwards. 14F in particular has a 50% chance to include a Monster House spawn.
