Myth Makers: Super Kart GP

Myth Makers: Super Kart GP is a kart racing game by Data Design, and the first in their long line-up of budget titles that eventually made them gain lots of notoriety. It contains only 5 tracks, tons of padding, very broken (and hilarious) physics, and constantly plugs the never-finished series' website on some of the loading screens. Its game engine was later reused for all of DDI's other racing games.

Italian PS2 Uncompressed Songs#

Inside the STREAMS folder in the Italian PS2 release are uncompressed music files in WAV format at 48KHz. Despite sharing the same filenames as the proper MSV files used by the game, TITLE.WAV and TRACK1.WAV aren't actually present in the game and are instead from other Data Design Interactive games, such as Ninjabread Man.

Inside this folder there's another folder named MUSIC which only contains one song, MUSIC.WAV, which is a very muffled recording of a cartoony, Yakety Sax-esque song, likely a test track. This last song is in 44KHz, rather than 48KHz like the rest of the uncompressed tracks.

Regional Differences#

The PS2 version got a revision with added features and minor changes that was only released in Italy.

English

Italian

  • The Italian version uses the correct title for the game.
  • The title screen and main menu are missing all the sound effects and announcer voice clips in the Italian release.

English

Italian

  • The stylized text in the main options has a darker color and smaller size in the Italian version. Some of the letters are also slightly more spaced out.
  • The standard text was made slightly smaller in the Italian release. In some instances their color was changed from yellow to white. The button icons were also made smaller.
  • The Load & Save option was renamed to Save / Load and got its Memory Card icon replaced by a more generic but fitting clipboard and pencil icon.
  • The MOVE prompt uses a D-Pad icon in the Italian version, instead of the analog stick.

English

Italian

  • The Controller sub-menu is much more basic in the Italian version, lacking the button icons and the option to change control schemes. The Pause and Use Special prompts were moved all the way down in their respective sections. The Movement prompt was renamed to Steering.

English

Italian

  • The screen darkening effect on the results and pause screens is much stronger in the Italian version.
  • The Italian version fixes the engine noises continuing to play after pausing the game, although they still can be heard briefly when selecting the Return to Main Menu option.

Training Mode#

English

Italian

A new option, named Training was added to the Italian release, which is accessible through the difficulty menu shown after selecting Play Game.

In this mode there are 5 new and very simple tracks designed to teach you each of the game's mechanics, such as the items and special abilities. There's only one CPU opponent, and it (and your character) are chosen at random by the game every time you start a track, as you cannot select your character in this mode, which has the unfortunate side-effect of potentially pitting a low-tier player character against a high-tier CPU character. Brand new loading screens were created exclusively for this mode.

Misc. Differences#

  • As this version was published in-house by Metro3D Europe, all mentions of Phoenix Games were removed from the Italian version, both from the opening logos (although the FMV is still present in the game's files) and the credits.
  • The Italian version runs on the PS2's dithered mode, which is not the case with the original.
  • The Italian release adds analogue controls, which were not present in the original, despite what the prompts and Controller menu imply.
  • None of the characters have voice clips in the Italian version.

English

Italian

  • The Italian save file refers to the game as "Myth Makers: Super Karts".
