Unused Scan Data

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically:

  • A handful of scans without logbook labels appear to have logbook icons associated with them. Document these scans.

All of the game's scan-related data for the entire game is stored in a central location, inside universeRoom.ROOM (which stores all data used in the game's menus). While there are numerous unused scans included in this file, the text strings associated with them are sadly absent from the final game. Fortunately, the file did preserve some of the internal labels meant for those strings, along with a some other bits & pieces of unused scan data.

Unused Scan Labels#

Scan labels will be listed in the same order that universeRoom.ROOM lists them in. Note that most of these labels reference locations by their internal ID, the corresponding internal ID for each location can be found on the Notes page for Prime 4.

Unused Logbook Scans#

These scans have multiple unused labels corresponding to the same entry; these usually consist of an in-game "preview" along with a logbook "title" and "description". To avoid needless repetition, all entries listed here will be assumed to have all three of these label types unless otherwise specified.

Label

Notes

fg_1140_cargoShip_dropped

Meant for the cargo transport that MacKenzie is trapped on top of when Samus first finds him, after it's dropped. Bizarrely, this is the very first entry listed in UniverseRoom.ROOM, when most of the other Fury Green object scans have their labels listed near the middle.
This scan notably has a unique Logbook image, depicting an intact version of the ship. This image is never used in the final game, as the only used labels for the cargo transport are "preview" labels without logbook information (specifically "fg_1140_cargoShip_hanging" and "fg_1140_cargoShip_doorAndPiston").

Federation_Scientist_F

These entries were likely intended for the scientists briefly seen in the UTO Research Center.
These entries both have placeholder scan images recycled from the Scout Bots, along with an "Image Pending" placeholder logbook icon.

Federation_Scientist_M

Federation_Mech_10m

Presumably, this was meant for the smaller mech variety shown in the game's intro cutscene. These labels are listed alongside all the scans for the game's various NPCs, which is rather odd as the mechs aren't supposed to have any autonomy.
Various labels found in the files refer to the MK-99 mechs as either "Federation_Mech_25m" or just "Mech". In the final game, none of the mechs have any sort of entry in the logbook.
This entry also has a placeholder logbook icon and scan images, all recycled from the prologue's generic Galactic Federation Troopers.

FG_Amb_DeepJungleBug

"Amb" is likely short for "Ambient".
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from the scan entry for the Sickleflies.

JungleFlyer_Swarm

Strangely, the ROOM file for Guiding Roots seems to reference this unused scan in the label "00_AMB_FG_1070_JungleFlyerCombat_2_ENG_Idonotlike" (incidentally, the last part of the label appears to reference an unused line of dialogue from MacKenzie). Since the label and its corresponding line are only found in the files for that location, it can be inferred that the unused scan label was intended for the Shren, which are the only scannable creatures in Guiding Roots.

FG_GE_FloatingSpore

"GE" is likely short for "Green Energy" (most other labels use "CGE", which is short for "Crystallized Green Energy").
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from the Shren Hives (a rather odd source, considering that the Shren Hives don't have a logbook entry).

ArmoredPincer

Interestingly, the file "AreaPakManagerCacheNX.bin" references a nonexistent pak called "ArmoredPincer.pak", suggesting that this scan was either an early label for a used enemy or intended for an enemy that got cut late in development.

Karatos_GustCrystals

The final game uses the labels "ib_5030_Keratos_Gust_Crystal" and "ib_5030_Keratos_Cyclone_IceBase", with neither one having a corresponding logbook entry.
Note that "Karatos" is not a typo, as all of Keratos's "creature" labels use that exact spelling.

Karatos_CycloneIce

Lamorn_13thPriest

Presumably refers to Chatoyant Vooloon, the only prominent Lamorn priest in the game.

Lamorn_Scientist

Presumably refers to Tahrgun, the only prominent Lamorn scientist in the game.

FG_WaterfallArt

Lore_Marker

The final game's "Lore" entries use variants of the label "LoreMarker", rather than the separated "Lore_Marker" seen in this label.

GF_Global_SP_Dropship

"SP" is likely an abbreviation for "Space Pirate".

Samus_Gunship

GF_1010_SP_Battleship

Like before, "SP" is likely an abbreviation for "Space Pirate".

GF_1010_SP_FlyingAPC

TEMP SCAN DATA

Two blatant placeholder scan labels, possibly intended for the unlikely scenario where a player somehow scans an item with incomplete scan data.
The game internally considers "TEMP SCAN DATA" to be a "title" label, and "This Scannable still needs to have its scan data set-up." to be a "preview" label. There is no corresponding "description" label for this entry.

This Scannable still needs to have its scan data set-up.

FG_3090_GiantHive

This entry has a placeholder logbook icon recycled from Lamorn Lore.

FG_2000_LoreMarker

This entry has a logbook icon and scan image recycled from Lamorn Lore.

Research

Possibly a placeholder for the various "Research" scans that it's stored alongside.

PickupContainer

ViolaIC

This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan images, all recycled from Vi-O-La.

Door_Facility_SV

Door_FGBoss_IB

The label for this entry is rather unusual, as "FGBoss" likely refers to Carvex (the boss of Fury Green), but the "IB" at the end seemingly refers to Ice Belt (which has Keratos as its boss).

Door_FGBoss_FG

Door_Vehicle_VF

Unused Scan Previews#

These entries only have a "preview" label, which means that they don't have any leftover logbook information (if they had any in the first place). Note that many of these scan labels are internally suffixed with the term "preview"; to avoid needless repetition, that suffix will not be included in any entries containing it.

Label

Notes

Sniper_Trooper_Injured

This label was likely meant for a temporary scan for Tokabi (based on it being listed alongside the other troopers' temporary scans), and presumably would have been used while he's injured in Ice Belt.
This scan apparently being a temporary scan is odd, as Tokabi is injured for the entirety of Samus's first trip to Ice Belt. For reference, the other human troopers' temporary scans are only used before they properly introduce themselves to Samus, each only occurring for a few minutes at most. This odd discrepancy seems to suggest that, at one point in development, Tokabi was going to be injured for a much briefer period of time than he is in the final game.

SV_CGE_BuriedDeposit

"CGE" appears to be an acronym for "Crystallized Green Energy".

SV_tGate_ready

SV_tGateProjection

SV_rockBrittle

SV_ShrineLock_Ice

SV_ShrineLock_Thunder

SV_ShrineLock_Fire

SV_ShrineLock_Missile_01

SV_FG_machineLift

SV_VF_shippingContainer

SV_VF_doorRFID

SV_IB_psychicPlatform

Strangely (and somewhat amusingly), this is the only psychic platforms label to not misspell "psychic" as "pyschic".

SV_IB_skytram

SV_GM_bollardLift

SV_GM_bridgeExtend

SV_FP_brokenStair

SV_FG_Fountain

SV_1080_GMSpiderBallTrack

SV_CSI_door_01

Retro Studios uses the term "CSI" when referring to puzzles involving scanning, so this label was likely related to some sort of scan puzzle.

SV_GM_grieverGooBlocker

SV_2020_missileTarget

SV_3011_AncientDoor_Broken

ib_5030_Shrine

This entry appears to have a placeholder logbook icon, which is recycled from the entry for the Sacred Shrine.

ib_1005_GondolaHologram

ib_1060_Schematic_Node_LowPower

ib_1060_Schematic_Node_FullPower

ib_1070_MechanicalGate

ib_1050_terminal_04

Only the "ib_1050_terminal" label numbered 03 is used in the game.

ib_1050_terminal_01

ib_1050_terminal_02

ib_1110_PsychicNode_05_right

Only the "ib_1110_PsychicNode" labels ending in "01_left" and "04_rightCenter" are used in the game.

ib_1110_PsychicNode_03_center

ib_1110_PsychicNode_02_leftCenter

ib_1105_RevealedSpiderBallTracks

ib_1090_SolidDome_01

Only the "ib_1090_SolidDome" label numbered 02 is used in the game.

ib_4030_circuitry

ib_4010_iceBlocker_01

Only the "ib_4010_iceBlocker" label numbered 02 is used in the game.

ib_3030_DesctructiblePod

"Desctructible" is not a typo; the file actually spells the label this way.

ib_3050_PsychicControlTerminalCSI

Retro Studios uses the term "CSI" when referring to puzzles involving scanning, so this label was likely related to some sort of scan puzzle.

ib_3087_terminal_02

Only the "ib_3087_terminal" label numbered 01 is used in the game.

ib_2023_PodOnTable

ib_2022_TrackingTerminal_04

Only the "ib_2022_TrackingTerminal" labels numbered 01, 02, 03, and 05 are used in the game.
These labels are used for the tracking terminals corresponding to other regions of Viewros, so this would likely have been a tracking terminal for Ice Belt itself (which is conspicuously absent in the final game).

ib_2010_CryopodContainer_06OpenFloor

Despite the number "06" suggesting the existence of additional "ib_2010_CryopodContainer" scans, no other entries for that label appear to exist.

ib_2010_CryopodContainer_06OpenHanging

ib_2021_DNAEgg_Pod_01_01

Despite there being a whopping total of 12 labels beginning with "ib_2021_DNAEgg_Pod", only the label ending in "02_01" is used in the game.

ib_2021_DNAEgg_Pod_01_02

ib_2021_DNAEgg_Pod_04_03

ib_2021_DNAEgg_Pod_04_04

ib_global_ElevatorHologram

ib_global_tkCodeFragmentFound_01

The items containing the TK Codes use the "ib_global_tkCodeFragmentFound" labels numbered 00, 02, 03, 05, 06, and 07.
These would likely have been used for other items that contained TK Codes, had they existed as scannable objects.

ib_global_tkCodeFragmentFound_04

ib_ResearchLog_01

There are actually 13 separate scan entries that reference this particular label.
Not to be confused with the separately-listed entry labeled "IB_ResearchLog_01", which capitalizes the "IB" prefix and is used for the first "Lore" entry written by Tahrgun.
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from Lamorn Data Logs.

ib_TEST_TKLock_Broken_01

These are the only scan labels in the game with the prefix "ib_TEST", suggesting that they were likely used by the developers for testing purposes.
Like "ib_ResearchLog_01", these entries each have a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from the Lamorn Data Logs.

ib_TEST_Password_01

ib_TEST_PsychicDrone_Empty

ib_TEST_Password_02

Dry_Vines

FG_TeleportResidual

FG_Fire_Shot_Blocker

Oddly, there are no labels for any corresponding "FG_Ice_Shot_Blocker" or "FG_Thunder_Shot_Blocker" scans.

FG_Psychic_Node

FG_3040_MorphballSecurityDoor_Active

FG_3040_MorphballSecurityDoor_Inactive

FG_3040_sniperRifle

The similar label "SV_5000_sniperRifle" is used whenever Tokabi's rifle is scanned, so this unused label was likely meant for a similar purpose.

DestructibleVineDestroyed_Description

Despite the label saying "Description", the game internally classifies this entry as a "preview" scan.
The label for an "Intact" vine is used for the growths on the vines holding up the cargo transport that Myles MacKenzie is first found on, so this label would've likely been used after they're destroyed. Considering that the final game has the growths disappear once they're destroyed, it's possible that the "DestructibleVine" labels were originally meant for the vines themselves (rather than being for the growths on the vines).

FG_2010_IceShot_Puzzle_Clue

FG_3050_Altar_Enabled00

While there is a used scan labeled "FG_3050_Altar_Disabled", the "enabled" altar uses the labels "FG_3050_Altar_Closed" and "FG_3050_Altar_Opened" instead.

FG_1020_Center_Tree

AncientLore_Reliquary_Dormant

The similar label "AncientLore_Reliquary_Statue_Dormant" is used in the game, so this unused label is likely related.

FG_3000_ControlBeamTunnel_Complete

The similar label "FG_3000_ControlBeamTunnel_BeamAcquired" is used in the game, so this unused label is likely related.

FG_3150_BombGenerator_Disabled

The game uses the similar labels "FG_3150_BombGenerator_Activated" and "FG_3150_BombGenerator_Enabled", so this unused label is likely related.

gm_3070_DeadGriever_02

Despite the "02" at the end suggesting the existence of additional "gm_3070_DeadGriever" scans, no other entries for that label appear to exist.
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from the scan for the Metareeta.

gm_3050_PowerBombDrillBit

"gm_3050" refers to the Chasm in Great Mines.

gm_2080_Terminal_02

Only the "gm_2080_Terminal" label numbered 01 is used.

gm_2080_Terminal_03

gm_global_MaintenanceBot_Offline

fp_3010_LavaPipe

fp_3170_ClampBattery_Online

The label "fp_3170_ClampBattery_Offline" is used for the Charge Amplifier's power source, so this label was likely meant for when the power source was turned on.

fp_global_ComputerTerminal

fp_global_LoreTabletProjector

There are actually 4 separate scans referencing this label.

fp_1000_Vi-O-La_TunnelSpinner

fp_LamornSignage_ToControlRoom

fp_3125_PsychicContainer_Platform

fp_2020_StorageUnit_Damaged

fp_4020_PsychicChain_Pickup

fp_3020_ProcessingTank_Disabled

Only the normal "fp_3020_ProcessingTank" label is used in the final game.

fp_3020_ProcessingTank_Malfunctioning

fp_3070_GreenEnergyShell_Tube

fp_3070_PowerNode_Online

The label "fp_3070_PowerNode_Offline" is used for the powered-off spinner activation circuit, so this unused label presumably would've been used after it was powered on.

fp_1030_DamagedPanel

fp_3150_ComputerTerminal

CT_Global_ScanError

CT_Barrier

CT_Barrier_error

CT_Elevator_Hologram

CT_Guardian_Pedestal_powerDown

sv_1020_Barrier

Despite the "sv_1020" referring to an area classified as being within Sol Valley (specifically the Entrance to Chrono Tower), these labels are listed alongside the scan labels for Chrono Tower instead of being listed with the scan labels for Sol Valley.

sv_1020_Barrier_error

CT_1050_PsychicInstruction

ct_1050_statue_flanking

ct_1050_statue_flanking_error

ct_1050_statue_error

ct_1050_statue

ct_1050_pedestal_trial_error

The normal "ct_1050_pedestal_trial" label is used for the Lamorn Teleporter, so this presumably would've been used if Samus scanned it before obtaining the Psychic Visor.

ct_1020_statue_error

ct_1020_statue

ct_3020_Guardian_Socket

ct_3030_statue

CT_2010_MasterTeleporterActivated

CT_1030_statue

CT_1030_statue_error

vf_2420_TeleporterTube_Offline

The label "vf_2420_TeleporterTube_Online" is used for the Teleporter Tube, so this was presumably meant for when the Teleporter Tube isn't online.

vf_2400_containerDoubleStack

vf_2400_grappleDropCrate

The label "vf_2400_grappleDropCrate_Pin" is used for the lynchpin that secures the robot-arm fastener, so this unused label is likely related.

vf_3100_hologramProjector_Offline

There are 6 other "vf_3100_hologramProjector" labels used for the holograms displaying each tower's status, so this label was likely meant as a general scan for when the holograms aren't powered on.

vf_global_portculis_Online

vf_global_factoryFloorLift_Offline

vf_global_factoryFloorLift_Online_Locked

The labels "vf_1120_suitAcquisitionConsole_Online" and "vf_1120_suitAcquisitionConsole_Offline" are both used for the Vi-O-La Suit Printer, so this label was presumably for after Samus obtains the Vi-O-La Suit.

vf_1420_TeleporterTube_Offline

The label "vf_1420_TeleporterTube_Online" is used for the Transport Tube to Elevator 1, so this unused label was presumably meant for when that Transport Tube is offline.

vf_1310_elevatorLightningRods

Door_Hangar

GF_SpacePirate_DropShip

This entry has placeholder scan images recycled from the 565-PH Hellfire ship.

GF_ComputerTerminal_01

The final game uses the "GF_ComputerTerminal" labels numbered 03 and 06 for the Security Clearance Terminals, so these unused labels are likely related.
Oddly, the corresponding labels for numbers 05 and 06 are separated from the other "GF_ComputerTerminal" labels, being listed right after the "GF_Console" labels mentioned below.

This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from Psychic Containers.

Elevator_Hologram

PsychicShrine_LatchNode

The entries for the Grapple Nodes use the label "GrappleLatchNodes"; this unused label is likely related.
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from Grapple Nodes.

PsychicGrapplePoint

Psybot_Dormant

This entry has a placeholder logbook icon and scan image, both recycled from Psy-bot Soldiers.

Door_FGBoss_IB_Locked

Likely related to the unused "Door_FGBoss_IB" label mentioned under the "Complete Scan Entries" header. Oddly, this label is listed as an independent "preview" entry, instead of being part of a "complete" entry like all other scans with alternate previews.

Partially-Unused Scans#

While these entries do have a used "preview" label, their corresponding labels for a logbook "title" and "description" are left completely blank (as none of these scans have logbook entries). Note that while some of these scans do have images, they will not be noted since those images are seen in their respective entry's "preview" scan.

Label

Notes

Generic_Trooper

The corresponding preview is used for some of the generic Galactic Federation Troopers in the prologue, specifically the ones carrying an assault rifle. While the generic Galactic Federation Troopers in the prologue do have a logbook entry, that uses the label "Generic_TrooperB" for some reason.
This entry has a placeholder logbook icon, recycled from the (used) entry for the prologue's generic Galactic Federation Troopers.

Unused Logbook Images#

Dropped Cargo Transport#

This image is referenced by the scan labeled "fg_1140_cargoShip_dropped", which is the unused scan for the cargo transport. While the final game does use a few "preview" scans for the cargo transport, none of them have any sort of entry in the logbook.

Shren Hive#

This image is referenced by the scan labeled "Flying_Shooter_Hive", which is the scan for the Shren Hives. While the final game does use the label's corresponding preview scan, the Shren Hives don't have an entry in the logbook, causing this image to go unused. Oddly, this image is also referenced by a completely-unused scan that's labeled "FG_GE_FloatingSpore", presumably as a placeholder logbook image.

Placeholder Images#

This is a placeholder image with text saying "Image Pending", if it wasn't obvious. This image is referenced by the scans labeled "Federation_Scientist_F", "Federation_Scientist_M", and "Door_Legacy_GF" (incidentally, all of these scans appear to be intended for the UTO Research Center).

Additionally, a surprising number of scans with no logbook entry have a small black square as their logbook image. This is mostly done by used "preview" scans that don't have a corresponding logbook entry, though it's unclear why those scans would need to reference a logbook image in the first place. Due to how incredibly small this image is (being a mere 64 pixels in size), it will not be shown here as it would be nearly-invisible on most screens.
