Unused Music#
UniverseRoom.pak contains unused songs from previous Metroid Prime games, most of which were likely meant to be unlocked for the Vi-O-La radio after scanning the "Samus and Vi-O-La" amiibo (the sole exception being "General Inter-World Elevator" from Prime 1, which was presumably a placeholder for the remake used in Great Mines). In the final game, the only song from a previous Prime game to be unlocked like this is the Prime 1 menu theme. Interestingly, the tracks for both "Bryyo Seed Boss" and "Berserker Lord" appear to be alternate mixes unique to Prime 4, which could indicate that they were fairly close to being used in the final game.

Prerendered Cutscene Dialogue Tracks#
Many of the prerendered cutscenes with voice acting have audio tracks containing what appears to be a rough edit of the cutscene's dialogue. This is probably due to a quirk in how the cutscene engine handles audio, since in-engine cutscenes have separate tracks for voices and sound effects while the prerendered cutscenes have the voices and sound effects baked into the video file. To avoid the potential issues of the prerendered cutscenes having one less audio track than expected, these odd files are likely used as a "voice" track that gets muted immediately, while the baked-in audio is treated as a sound effect track instead. Since all of these odd tracks are for cutscenes that have subtitles shown in-game, the game may link the way that subtitles are displayed for cutscenes with the existence of a dialogue track for said cutscene.
Interestingly, several of these tracks seem to have been made before audio effects were applied to the voices, which causes several characters (most notably VUE) to sound very different than they do in-game. Some cutscenes also have very long silences before certain pieces of dialogue, this is due to these tracks only containing the cutscenes' dialogue, meaning that there are no sound effects or music in these files. Please note that none of these cutscenes have proper titles (the next-closest thing would be the internal label used for each cutscene's corresponding subtitles); as such, the titles listed below are unofficial descriptors and may not be accurate to what each cutscene's "official" title actually is.

This needs some investigation. |
In addition to the above-mentioned dialogue tracks, FrontEnd.pak has seven pre-rendered "Last Lamorn" cutscenes that each have an associated unused dialogue track. However, these cutscenes are all rendered in-engine when they first play in-game, and the dialogue tracks used there are exactly the same as the cutscenes' "unused" tracks in FrontEnd.pak (right down to the file names, in fact). Since these "unused" dialogue tracks are identical copies of each cutscene's used dialogue track, they will not be documented here for the time being.

Uncalled Dialogue (DuplicateData)#
There are several lines here that don't get called by any of the dlog files in the game, all of which are from MacKenzie. First is a fairly generic reaction from him that could've been used for almost anything. Interestingly, the paks fg_1080_giantTree, fg_1140_engineerRescue, and fg_1150_missileBlockers all list the label "00_REM_FG_1080_destroysSapBarrier_1_ENG_OhWellOkay" in their respective ROOM files, which suggests that this line was likely meant for when Samus destroys a sap barrier in one of those locations. The line also has the filter that's used when MacKenzie talks to Samus over the radio, even though he doesn't use it in those locations.

Oh, well... okay. |
Next is a line where he seems to be annoyed with Samus destroying something. This may have been meant for a similar situation to the line above, though none of the files in the final game contain any labels referencing it.

|---|---|

Last is a line where he notices a mosquito in amber. This line is almost certainly a nod to Jurassic Park, which would fit right alongside the game's other references to 1980s sci-fi films (such as Aliens and Predator). Similarly to before, the paks fg_1080_giantTree, fg_1140_engineerRescue, and fg_1150_missileBlockers all list the label "00_AMB_FG_1080_ApproachSapBlocker_1_ENG_Fascinatin" in their respective ROOM files, which suggests that this line was likely meant for when Samus approaches a resin Missile blocker in one of those locations.

There are a ton of unused lines where MacKenzie is fascinated and/or surprised by something, none of which are called by the pak's sole dlog file. A line from MacKenzie talking about the mech, which is never called by the pak's dlog file. While zone_furyGreen does use a variant of this line, it's split up into three separate audio files and uses a different take. Interestingly, this pak's ROOM file has the label "00_AMB_FG_3020_EngineerExaminesMech_1_ENG_PoorbabySh" - while this could correspond to the used line, it's far more likely that it corresponds to this unused line (as the used line already has a corresponding label in one of the game's msbt files).

Some unused responses from Armstrong to Samus, presumably for when she's done with a topic. Armstrong has unused dialogue acknowledging that Samus rescued VUE, along with some lines telling Samus to go to Great Mines. Like Armstrong, Duke also has some unused dialogue for when he's done talking to Samus. These were likely cut for the same reasons as Armstrong's dialogue (being unnecessary due to the low amount of dialogue from the NPCs to Samus in base camp). Additionally, all of Duke's responses are filtered, sounding similar to when he's talking over the radio in Flare Pool.

VUE also has dialogue that's likely meant for when he "properly" powers on after the aforementioned repairs. In the final game, Samus is rather abruptly told to go to Great Mines by MacKenzie right after she leaves Ice Belt after powering on VUE, with the other characters never once mentioning it. Notably, the first line here reveals that VUE apparently used a woman text-to-speech voice during development, though this was likely done so it wouldn't be mistaken for his actual in-game voice and probably wasn't related to his gender at any point in development.

Uncalled Dialogue (UI_PauseMenu)#
Rather bizarrely, a line from one of the generic troopers at the UTO Research Center can be found among all the other audio files here, with it seemingly being ripped directly from the dialogue track for the cutscene where a trooper tells Samus what's going on. This could have been a placeholder line for MacKenzie's hint system, but even then this would still be very unusual, as those lines are kept in the pak files for either UniverseRoom or zone_SolValley (in fact, this line is the only piece of dialogue found in the entire pak). It's also possible that this was used to test the volume setting for the voices, though even in that scenario it would make more sense to keep it in UniverseRoom, since that setting isn't be exclusive to the pause menu.

There's an unused line from MacKenzie that's never called by the game, which was meant to be used for the hint telling Samus that the mech parts aren't just in the debris fields. Strangely, the hint used by the game still says "like Ice Belt" at the end of its subtitle, even though that part is completely absent from the audio file used for that hint. This oddity seems to indicate that this line either got replaced at the very last second or was unused by mistake.

This file has a lot of unused lines from MacKenzie; if the file's used lines are anything to go by, these unused ones were likely meant to play in the Temple Entrance where Samus acquires the Control Beam. First are a few lines where he talks about a door locked with some "strange seals", which oddly have the filter normally used when MacKenzie's talking over the radio.

|
What do you think we'll find on the other side of that door? It's locked with one of those strange seals. |
MacKenzie being fascinated by something, probably related to the "strange seals" mentioned above. Notably, one of these lines appears to have a corresponding label in the ROOM file for fg_3000_courtyard.pak ("00_AMB_FG_3000_EngineerApproachesContainer_3_ENG_Wellwouldy"), further suggesting that the lines in this dlog file were meant for that area.

MacKenzie reacting to Samus demonstrating her psychic powers, all of which are filtered. Some of these lines sounding rather... cringe-worthy (for lack of a nicer term), which could have contributed to their removal. In the final game, MacKenzie doesn't directly comment on Samus's newfound psychic abilities.

A rather out-of-place line where MacKenzie reacts to Samus finding something in Flare Pool, likely the Fire Chip. The final game uses a completely different line when Samus returns with the Fire Chip ("Welcome back, Samus. Come on... Show me what you found in Flare Pool.")

A line from MacKenzie meant for when Samus arrives at base camp with the Fire Chip. The context of the line (the preceding line is his used reaction to Samus arriving from Ice Belt with the Ice Chip) along with its phrasing seems to imply that he wasn't aware that Samus found the Fire Chip at all, which could have contributed to the line's removal.

A couple of unused lines from MacKenzie. The rest of the dlog file consists of (otherwise used) lines in an order that ends up vaguely resembling the cutscene where MacKenzie installs the Ice Shot, which seems to indicate that this dlog file (and the lines called by it) was probably used as a placeholder for that cutscene.

Some text-to-speech lines from MacKenzie talking about some "Gal Fed tech". MacKenzie telling Samus to destroy some nests. Interestingly, the pak file for fg_1070_largeRoots contains the label 00_AMB_FG_1070_SamusDestroysNest_1_ENG_Itsworking, which seems to indicate that this line was going to play after Samus destroys a nest and also points to this line specifically referring to Shren nests (as Shren are the only creature set to spawn in that area, along with them being the only creature in Fury Green to appear from visible nests). While Samus can destroy Shren nests in the final game, there isn't any dialogue that outright tells her to do so.

This file contains a bunch of unused lines from MacKenzie that were likely meant for the Varmis boss fight.
First are some lines that seem to be for when Samus takes damage, which are all missing the filter used when MacKenzie speaks to Samus over the radio. These lines could have had the potential to get very annoying very quickly, which is likely the main reason they go unused.
Audio File |
Transcription |
|---|---|
Woah! That thing is not playing around. |
|
Ouch. You alright? |
|
Oof. Sorry. |
There are also some lines that seem to be for Samus damaging Varmis, which were probably cut for the same reason as the "taking damage" lines above. These lines are also lacking the filter used when MacKenzie speaks over the radio.

|---|---|
It felt that. |
|
You hurt it! |
|

|

There are also some lines that seem to be for when Samus defeats Varmis, though the first few lines are nonspecific enough that they could have possibly been for Samus merely damaging Varmis instead. Aside from not using the radio filter, these don't seem to have a clear reason for being unused.

There's also this line, meant for right after Samus goes in Varmis and blows it up. While there's no clear reason why this was cut, it's possibly due to it coming across as a bit... weird, for lack of a better word.

A few lines from MacKenzie talking about the mech parts, none of which have the filter used when MacKenzie is talking to Samus over the radio. Oddly, these lines are also found in 53179c30-db39-437c-8e38-965d4401497b.dlog, which contains the dialogue used after Samus first explores Ice Belt (about halfway into the game). It's possible that, at one point in development, the hunt for mech parts would've started at that point instead of being done near the end of the game.
Audio File |
Transcription |
|---|---|
If I had the mech parts, I think I would be able to fix the mech. But we'll need a way to bring those mech parts into base camp. |

Samus, I think the mech parts also got transported to Viewros. If you find them, I can fix the mech. |

Exactly what I've been after. |
There are a lot of lines telling Samus where to go. Their nearly-identical structure seems to indicate that getting the keys used to be much less linear than in the final game, which could explain the final game's infamous line where MacKenzie says that Samus can get the keys in any order. First are some lines that were presumably meant to follow another sentence by MacKenzie, none of which are filtered. The final game uses the corresponding line for Ice Belt in one of the map screen hints (specifically the one reminding Samus about Ice Belt's Thunder Shot blockers), but the rest go unused.

Like Volt Forge. |

Like Fury Green. |

Naxt are several lines of MacKenzie asking if Samus has "checked out" various areas, all of which have very similar sentence structures. The final game only uses the corresponding lines for Ice Belt ("Have you checked out the snowy mountain?") and Flare Pool ("Have you checked out the volcano?"), leaving these unused... not that they sound particularly close to being used in the first place.

And last of the lines telling Samus where to go are these text-to-speech ones, which all talk about a "beacon" in certain areas. The final game only uses the term "beacon" when referring to the distress signals sent out by some of the Federation Troopers (specifically MacKenzie and Armstrong), so these lines could be from a point in development where the NPCs' locations weren't yet finalized.
