Hearts (Microsoft, Windows, 1993)

Another of the Microsoft card games, and the first one with multiplayer support. Still, it didn't quite gain the popularity of its sister games.

Sub-Page#

Debug Mode#

Hearts93-FIN_DebugMode.png

This game has a debug mode, but it's a bit harder to enable here because it requires editing the Windows registry.

Open a registry editor and go to key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Hearts (create any sub-keys that don't exist). Add a REG_SZ named ZB and set its value to 42 (in Windows for Workgroups 3.11, add "ZB=42" to the [Hearts] section of win.ini).

After having done this, start the game and you'll be able to use the keyboard combination Ctrl + Shift + Alt + F12 to see the cards of your competitors. This was probably used to test the game engine and possibly also the AI.

Version Differences#

The Windows XP version changes the icon (although the old icon remains as a low color depth fallback) and removes networking support.

Swedish

Finns det HJÄRTERrum så finns det stjärterum...
- Göteborgare på 7:ans spårvagn

If there's room in the HEARTS, there is room for the butt...
- Gothenburger on tram line 7

A play on a Swedish proverb which, if interpreted literally, is about making room for someone you care about. Figuratively, it can be used to describe being willing to sacrifice something to help someone overcome an obstacle. The closest English counterpart is likely "Where there's a will, there's a way". Since this is a common proverb, as opposed to a famous quote, the line is instead attributed to some random tram passenger from the Swedish city of Gothenburg who is presumably scooching over to make room for someone else to sit.
