Unused Audio

This is a sub-page of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (PlayStation 2).

Unused Sound#

Privet Drive, Surrey#

Privet Drive was meant to be seen as an introduction as seen more below. There's ambience sound for inside the house and outside in the street and also two others sound presumably for when the Dursleys try to stop Harry from going to Hogwarts.

Maybe the ambiance sound and the unused Muggle characters' data could indicate that you could hang around at Privet Drive before getting on with the game.

Spell Book Chamber#

The distored voice you hear as you select a spell, can be hear, unedited, on a bank called "spc", short for "Spell Book Chamber", it is not clear if the spellbook was supposed to talk to Harry or even the Basilisk.

Troll#

The mountain troll, also from the first book, has remaining sounds in the game that would also be reused in the 6th generation console adaptation of Sorcerer's Stone. The security trolls in Prisoner of Azkaban would also end up making use of these sounds. A model for a troll can be found on the GameCube and Xbox version of the game.

Ron#

Ron is the only character to have so many unused lines. Most of his lines here speak a lot about the game at a different staging state.

Whomping Whillow's Door#

File where it was found

Clip

Note

whw02_convs.sdt

Ron mentions two doors, though it is impossible to know the context of what or where a door in the forest could be. Except if that arch at the end, that go to the Grounds was one of those doors. Interestingly enough, one of those lines was accidentally left and used in the GameCube and Xbox version of the game.

Day 2#

File where it was found

Clip

Note

dy201_convs.sdt

The scene between Malfoy and Ron at the Quidditch Practice should have happened in the game too. It would have happened like in the PC version, as the lines are identical to it.

Night 4#

Night 4 is the night Harry goes into the Forbidden Forest. There are, however, lines from Ron that present a different scenario from the previous night. Harry was to gather the ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion himself and could have seen how to do it in the Library. When it was done, Ron and Hermione were supposed to drink it with Harry as intended and sneak into the dungeons with Ron. Ron would have made a "diversion" as you can hear, literally, shouting insults and asking Malfoy for, maybe, the password to Slythrin's Dormitory so he could... um... yeah. Understood like this, this scenario doesn't make any sense which would explain why it was reworked.

No, Harry, Yes. Prepare us, in a single night, a potion that tooks months to produce !

Clip

Note

nit04_convs.sdt

We don't really know where Harry was supposed to find the ingredients, but he might have had to obtain hair from Milicent Bulstrode, Crabbe and Goyle itself.

nit04_convs.sdt

nit04_convs.sdt

JK Rowling has clearly requested to have Ron yelling some swear on a dungeon in the game.

The second Defend Against the Dart Arts class#

File where it was found

Clip

Note

dy601_convs.sdt

Fumos would have had a dedicated class, Harry would have had to sneak into the Fumos challenge while Doxies from the original work attacked the class and had to defeat them with the spell, which is weird, as Fumos is a spell that cast smokes, so what smoke is supposed to do against Doxies is a mystery.

Unused Dialogue#

Introduction#

Like in the PC version, the game would've had an introduction before Harry's arrival at the Burrow. This dialogue can be found in the GameCube and Xbox versions of the game, completely identical. Note that the line "There is a plot to make most terrible things happen." was already an unused line in the PC version.

File where it was found

Clip

Note

new01_convs.sdt

This line is for an unused introductory cutscene narrating the events of the story up until the game starts at the Burrow. The text is similar to the opening cutscenes of the PC and PS1 versions, but not identical to either. In the final versions of the PS2, GameCube and Xbox console adaptations, the game starts directly with Harry, Ron and his brothers arriving at the Burrow, with no introductory cutscene. Apart from this line, there is no data about this cutscene. The subtitle text corresponding to this line exists on the GameCube and Xbox and PC version as well as the line "there is a plot to make most terrible things happen." was already unused in the PC version.

Harry and Ron were supposed to converse a bit when leaving Diagon Alley. These line are used on GC/XBOX game but not here. You can just see the car flying and fade directly to the Whomping Willow.

The Old Hag#

File where it was found

Clip

Note

dia01_convs.sdt

The Hag is a NPC who was taken to oblivion with Knockturn Alley. These dialogue lines were scattered in each console version of the game except the PS1, especially the second line which is also present in the Xbox version of the game, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GameCube, Xbox)/Unused_Audio#Old_Hag the GameCube port has four other lines from the Hag.

Deleted, empty Sound and oddities#

The game sounds are all scattered in a folder, with 322 sound banks for any categories of sound and dialogue. Any of those has a .map file that goes with it, there 400 of those files, indicating that 78 sound banks have been deleted or relocated. A lot of those sounds or banks were blanked out for some reason. Some other sound data can be found on the game code itself.

Gringotts#

Various elements suggest that the Gringotts bank was once in the game until it got removed from the final product:

  • "eAudioCategory_Atmos_Gringotts" is a unique audio category. it also has a .map file called "atmos_gri.map" but the corresponding sound file doesn't exist.
  • Two sound named "gri_dor_in" and "gri_dor_out" exist but are duplicates of classic door sounds.
  • Many Griphook sounds are still in game. Sounds for walking, writing and stamping.
  • Diagon Alley have a zone called "eDiagonAlley_Gringotts" in its code.
  • Text Execution code for Gringotts hints from the GameCube version are in the data under the name "NGC_GRINGOTTS_HINTS_XX" (NGC stand for Nintendo GameCube) even if no text remains for it.

Character at Diagon Alley#

The game code has audio data for Hagrid and Tom the barman at Diagon Alley but also for Quirrell and Ollivender named "eAudioEvent_Qrl_diaX" and "eAudioEvent_Oli_diaX" and also another one called "eAudioEvent_Crk_diaX". It is uncertain to know who CRK could be. Whoever, they were supposed to be at Diagon Alley someway, somehow.

Olliver also have a audio category named "eAudioCategory_Ollivanders". That's pretty much all what left of it except for some text. For Quirrell... mmh... Nothing but this misspelled developer commentary explaining Character ID

CharacterId
This indicates the exact type of character this is. (i.e. Qurril or Snape, etc.)

Privet Drive#

The game just has a single audio category named "eAudioCategory_Privet_Drive". Some sound are left, you can heard them more above this.

Music#

  • "eAudioEvent_Music_bridge" and "eAudioEvent_Bridge_fallx", it is unsure what it's all about, except if it involved this one.
  • "eAudioEvent_Music_Fluffy" is still in there but any kind of music related to the creature does not exist anymore.
  • "eMusicTrack_Test", which corresponds to two music files "test.mpf" and test.mus" which does not exist in the file.
