Gals Panic S2

Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors.

To do:

  • There is a version with different girl graphics as seen in this speedrun that needs documentation.

Gals Panic S2 is an entry in the Gals Panic series of erotic arcade games. Following the change in direction from Gals Panic 4, S2 uses anime-styled girls instead of real models, although they undress all the same. Oh, and if you happen to have a time machine handy, you can call them on the phone!

Regional Differences#

There are four known regional versions in MAME: Japan, Europe, Asia, and Korea. The non-Japanese versions are all in English, with English voices and text.

The English voice acting gives most characters the same voice lines in-game, whereas in Japanese the girls all have voices unique to them.

Content-wise, Europe and Asia are virtually identical to each other, the Korean version is titled Gals Panic SU but is otherwise identical to the Europe/Asia versions, and the original Japanese version is missing versus play, but has the Super Kaneko Dial system. More on that later.

Title Screen#

Europe/Asia

Korea

The title screens of the Japan and Europe/Asia sets are similar, but the Europe/Asia set is missing the Japanese text above the Kaneko logo.

The Korean version's name change is pretty much only reflected on the title screen, as they didn't change the graphic in the background of the Gals Select screen or the attract mode.

Non-Korean Versions

Korea

One of the strangest changes to the game is the modification of the Kaneko logo in the Korean version... because it's got a little cat face on it! This change is the same as it was in the Korean versions of Gals Panic 3, 4, and S.

Attract Mode#

Japan

English sets

In the attract mode, the Japanese version has the characters saying a little something advertising the call function, as well as their voice actress(es) and illustrators. The English versions all replace this information with their ages and measurements.

English sets

The demo with Rui and Ruri shows the Extra Change mechanic in the English sets, but the Super Kaneko Dial mechanic in Japan. Because the demo needs to collect the phone, it plays out a bit differently. The Reiko demo is the same in both languages, showing the Extra Change mechanic, but also plays out differently in Japan to collect the phone.

Level Select#

Japan

English

The level name and number are formatted differently between languages. In Japanese it's white text and centered, whereas it's big bold yellow text in English.

Versus Mode#

In non-Japanese sets, a versus mode alongside the normal co-op mode is available when adding an additional player. The sounds are unused but present in the original Japanese version, just at the very end of the sound test list.

Super Kaneko Dial#

Exclusive to the Japanese version. By collecting a giant golden telephone that teleports around the stage, the girl you played with will give you a phone number as well as a 4-digit pin code.

gpanics2-skd.pnggpanics2-skd2.png What pin code you get is dependent on the time of day you played; playing before or after 18:00 (6 p.m. in 12-hour time) will give you a different pin.

The phone otherwise has no particular effect on gameplay. It's just there to bounce around the screen, and for you to collect if you'd like to call them on your real-world telephone.

...Except that the service has long since been discontinued (trying to call the number nowadays will just result in a "number unavailable" recording from the phone company). It's unknown when it was shut down and no recordings of the system are known to exist, which in turn means that it's not entirely clear just what you got for dialing the number (some Japanese flyers for the game state that it allows you to "have fun" with the girls as well as enter giveaways).

Super Kaneko Dial was only ever implemented in this game and did not return for the sequel.
