This is a sub-page of Alice: Madness Returns.

During development, a bunch of characters were forced to be cut from the game due to lack of time and limited budget. Despite being unused, the developers decided to include them in the game regardless, so their work wouldn't go to waste. The following characters can be seen in the game either as random background characters and/or as unlockables in the Extra Content/Characters section.

NPCs#

Frog Footman#

The Duchess's personal servant. Having previously been cut from the first Alice game, he along with the Fish Footman were planned to make their re-debut in the sequel.1 This time only the Frog Footman managed to make it in the final version... kind of.

A model of the Frog Footman can be viewed in the Extra Content section as an unlockable.

Humpty Dumpty#

Humpty Dumpty was meant to make a comeback it seems. He was going to appear in the Oriental Grove level although it is unknown what his role would be. A model of Humpty Dumpty appears in the Extra Content section, showing him fallen down and shattered similarly to his nursery rhyme. He also shows up on the cover of a book with the same name in the Dollhouse level.

Harmless Creatures#

Snail#

Basically a shell-less variant of the big snail that appears multiple times throughout Vale of Tears. Its character entry states that it would serve as a companion to Alice at some point in the level but it is unclear what it would do exactly.

Turtle Chest#

This creature was originally going to be involved in a chase sequence with Alice in the Deluded Depths. The chase would play out similarly to the one with the Mock Turtle from the first game.2 It ended up getting cut but the Turtle Chest can still be seen in the final game for a brief moment.

Enemies#

Mock Sparrows#

The Mock Sparrows or "Cowbirds" were originally going to be regular enemies instead of background characters. They are both of male and female gender and come in two variations: a bull (male) and a cow (female). The male ones are described as being very agile and fierce animals that love fighting while the female ones appear to be mild and clumsy until you get on their bad side.3

In the Extra Content section, their chatacter entry states that the Mock Turtle considers them a threat but it doesn't explain why.

Darksnail#

The remnants of a snail that got infected from the corruption left behind by the Infernal Train. During the transformation their shells grow spikes, their skin changes into a grey-black color and their behavior becomes very aggressive. They also like to feed on their own bile apparemtly.

The Darksnails can be seen wandering around in the Vale of Doom's background in the final game.

Automaton 2.0#

A new variant of the Automatons from the first game was set to appear as enemies. Although they were scrapped, they still appear in-game, in the background of the "Smelling & Regurgitating" level as an easter egg.

A model of the creature can also be seen in the Extra Content section.

Mersquid#

A broken figurehead of a ship with a demonic mermaid carved onto it. It has four anchors that would act as its tentacles and make it swim around like a squid, all the while attacking Alice.4 According to its in-game bios, Mersquids could bring down ships with their "siren" songs and collect their chains and anchors to become stronger.

In the final version, the Mersquid can be seen as a background object in Barrelbottom Town.

Piranha#

The ferocious flesh-eaters were initially going to be encountered in the Deluded Depths domain. They were ultimately cut from the level, but some piranhas can be seen being frozen within ice blocks at a London fishery in Chapter 2.

Toy Soldier#

A skinny wooden royal guard, whose head has nails driven into it and a big hole blasted through where the face ought to be. The Toy Soldier appears in several locations in the background of the Dollhouse as a decoration object.

Doll Boy#

A male variant of the Doll Girl enemy. He's wielding two scissor blades as weapons and wears a green silk shirt, shorts and toeless socks. His face is damaged and has nails pinned all over it. Unlike his female counterpart, this guy has eyeballs... making him ten times more creepier!

Dog Baby#

A living dog's skull with fleshy ears, attached onto a device that allows him move around. According to the game's art book, he began life as Doll Girl's pet.5 A sketch of the Dog Baby shows that he would use a prehensile tongue to attack Alice during combat.

In the final game, the Dog Baby appears in the Dollmaker's Workshop as a decoration object. A sketch of the Dog Baby attacking Alice.

Bosses#

Mecha#

The giant robot that Alice encounters at the end of the Hatter's Domain was supposed to be a proper boss battle. Each arm would be controlled by the Dormouse and March Hare and it would pound the terrain around Alice. To defeat it, Alice was supposed to shoot its weak spot at the center of its chest with the Pepper Grinder. American Mcgee states that his team had only one guy working on the boss/enemy Ai and he simply ran out of time to do everything he wanted to do.6 Mcgee also notes that the Mecha was "frustrating" to make it work.

Wasp Empress#

The mother of all samurai wasp warriors that sacrificed their lives for so she can dine luxuriously. She was meant to be the boss of the Oriental Grove domain but ended up being scrapped possibly due to limited time and resources.

The Empress herself is dressed in a white kimono and wields four katanas, one for each arm. She would wear three different Japanese masks: one looks like a sinister tengu mask, the other is a green oni and the last one is an exaggerated geisha. Perhaps she would have different attacks every time she changed masks?

GFxUI#

Two otherwise unseen creatures are mentioned in the GFxUI.int file: the Deep Sea Snark and the Ruin Generator. The former would have been encountered sometime around in Chapter 2 while the latter would have appeared in Chapter 3.

Deep Sea Snark#

Character Description

An aquatic version of the Ice Snark haunts the frigid sea. It feeds on creatures akin to Amazonian piranha, and can regurgitate them with the velocity of a Gatling Gun. Their hits have a nasty bite.

Ruin Generator#

Character Description

An obvious source of the RUIN—but, unfortunately, not the sole source; and not the cause of the corruption. That’s no reason not to turn the vicious thing into junk.
