This is a sub-page of Proto:Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (SNES).

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

This prototype, dated April 13, 1992 (three days older than the final build), was dumped by Xnz136 and was later released by SNESCentral.

According to an Activision internal memo shared by the Video Game History Foundation, Nintendo executive Shinichi Todori warned that Street Fighter II had initially failed submission "quite a few times" due to Nintendo of America's policies around gore. This prototype may be from one of those failed submissions before some violent language was changed.

Text Differences#

All of the win quotes are identical to the arcade version's English translation

Ryu

Proto

Final

YOU MUST DEFEAT SHENG LONG TO STAND A CHANCE!

YOU MUST DEFEAT MY DRAGON PUNCH TO STAND A CHANCE!

Ryu's infamous "Sheng Long" quote (Sheng Long being a mistranslation of his signature Shoryuken move) was corrected, using the localized name "Dragon Punch" that had previously been used in the English version of the first game (later translations would retain the Japanese name). The mistranslation did manage to survive into the final product in some form: the US manual refers to "Sheng Long" as Ryu and Ken's master, which was of course completely made up (though later games would give Ryu and Ken a proper master in the form of Gouken).

Balrog (Boxer)

Proto

Final

MY FISTS HAVE YOUR BLOOD ON THEM!

GET UP YOU WIMP!

A classic case of Nintendo of America's censorship policies necessitating dialogue being toned down.

M. Bison (Dictator)

Proto

Final

ANYONE WHO OPPOSES ME WILL BE DISMEMBERED!

ANYONE WHO OPPOSES ME WILL BE DESTROYED!

Ditto. The censored win quote is actually more accurate to the Japanese script, as its equivalent win quote ("All who oppose me will die by my hand!") didn't mention anything about dismemberment.

Chun-Li

Proto

Final

ALL THE WOMEN IN THE WORLD SHOULD KNEEL DOWN BEFORE ME!

YOU SHOULD ALL KNEEL DOWN BEFORE ME!

While this dialogue doesn't clearly go against NoA's censorship guidelines like the others, it was still changed for the final game.
