This is a sub-page of Proto:PlayStation Vita.

Firmware version 0.930.010 was found on a DEM-3000G prototype console, that resembles a PSP Go. This is an internal firmware, likely used to develop the majority of system applications, which means it includes the top bar, background and app icons, unlike 0.945 which is an external firmware. It's also currently the earliest firmware to have screenshots. Watch on YouTube

Differences#

This firmware has truckloads of interesting differences, especially for being such an early firmware.

Operating System#

  • No sound driver. This means no navigation sounds anywhere.
  • There is no boot animation, it just boots straight into the LiveArea.
  • Tapping 2 items at the same time will hard crash the system, likely due to a buffer/stack overflow.
  • The system may crash when closing an application and then going back to the What's New LiveArea.
  • The default system date is September 12, 2009.

LiveArea#

  • The New Rodin font from the PlayStation Portable is used.
  • The default background is completely different, being a low-resolution image of what appears to be water caustics.

  • There is no lock screen.
  • Instead of the icons falling and bouncing, they just simply pop in. They also wobble in a different way.
  • The icons are 2D circles, while in the final firmware they are 3D pebbles.
  • There's a What's New app, which is always open and the LiveArea has a dummy screenshot of featured items. This is nowhere to be seen in any other firmware. The icon for it is also just hastily copy and pasted from the PS3, which means it's cut off somewhat.
  • The icon touch animation is much faster and abrupt.
    • Additionally, the app icon is not mirrored to be back of the pebble, unlike the final.
  • The LiveArea for Welcome Park and Comics apps says "sorry underconstruction" on the start icon, and the background is some cartoon clouds.
  • When you peel an application's LiveArea away, it says "The application has closed".
    • Additionally, when you peel the LiveArea, it will bounce before falling, compared to the final where it just falls.
  • The screen flashes if you try to tap on a placeholder.
  • Icons and LiveArea graphics such as Near and Party are completely different from 0.990. According to Near's bg0, the name was originally a working title before becoming the final name.

  • The paper fold looks more metallic.
  • When opening an application through the LiveArea, instead of zooming into the Start button it just cuts to black.
  • The PlayStation Store tab is present on system apps.
  • When tapping on a LiveArea gate, it will tint blue.

Common UI#

  • The arrow and shape of the back button is completely different.
  • All animations don't have smooth transitions.
  • When trying to scroll down in list views when there are no items left, the list will stretch, rather than separate.
  • Buttons look much flatter with a simple gradient and white shadow.
  • The Start text, instead of having a blue banner behind it is just a black background.
  • There is no blue glow when a list item is pressed.
  • The border on error dialogs are thicker.
    • Additionally, the OK button is shorter than the final.

Top Bar#

  • The notification button shape is tab-like rather than the final's circle.
  • There's a empty spot on the top left.
  • The opened app list is always visible when using system apps.
  • There's placeholder Bluetooth and loading indicators on the top left.

Trophies#

The Trophies app is in such an early stage it wasn't even a proper app, just a blank LiveArea.

Welcome Park#

  • Welcome Park is here, although it has a different icon and is named "WelcomePa".
The marble head we would've gotten.
  • Additionally, the "Start" text in it's LiveArea reads "START!" on here, nothing like the final.

Web Browser#

  • The Web Browser, at this very early stage, is just a fake one as it shows a low resolution still image of God of War search results on Google from around 2010.
  • There's a shoddily placed "Open New Window" button that was truncated to "Open New Windo".
  • The top bar will have a white gradient when in a tab.

Videos#

  • The list buttons in Videos are rainbow colored.
  • Inconsistent naming for the app. The menu calls it "Videos", it's LiveArea calls it "VIDEO PLAYER", and the app itself calls it just "Video".
  • The LiveArea gate is completely different, depicting black curtains with the Video icon.
  • The icons on the list are all right-facing arrows.
  • No "Connect To Device" feature.
  • "Rented" is known as "Rental".
  • The background of the app is different, with a salmon red floor and a black atmosphere. This appearance would later be used for the hidden Package Installer app in the final version, as it's interface wasn't touched since 0.990.

Comics#

This firmware has a Comics app which is nowhere to be seen in any release firmware. It's likely this was hastily ported from the PlayStation Portable, as it uses the same textures as the PSP's Digital Comics app.

  • The background of the app is the covers of several famous comics, such as Wolverine, G.I Joe, X-Men and The Avengers.
  • There's only a "Recently Added" section that does nothing, so this is just a placeholder app.

Settings#

  • The Settings LiveArea is completely different, having a concept of the app as the background.
  • Extremely early System Update page, which looks completely different from other pages, such as the unique back button. Even the button text isn't even centered right, and there's no animation when you exit it!
  • The system is known as simply "VITA".
  • The System Info screen does not report the system firmware version.
  • There is a wrench icon next to headings.
  • The Power Save settings is a placeholder, with a "msg_auto_standby" fallback string and "TBD" next to it.
  • The French translation for "System" and "Input Languages" are called "Pending", merely a placeholder.
  • The list overlaps with the header text.
  • Certain menus have no button background, leaving them transparent.
  • The Application Data Management button will do nothing.

Unused Graphics#

There's way, way more than just those differences.

aa.jpg#

An image of Ayaka Nishiwaki (a-chan), from the J-pop group Perfume, can be found within vs0/download_resource. The metadata suggests this was edited using Paint.net v3.55.

FF13_Screenshot.png#

An even earlier version of the LiveArea gate, found in several sce_sys directories.

informationbar.png#

Found within system_settings_main.rco is an early concept of the status bar. The most notable difference is that the notifications button is on the left and placed inside of the bar. The file metadata suggets this was created on April 13, 2010, and created using GIMP.

statusbar.png#

Found within system_update_plugin.rco is an even earlier concept of the status bar, with it not even being the correct width, and using the Helvetica Neue Condensed font set instead of the Rodin set. The file metadata suggests this was created on January 26, 2010.

action_texture_newopen_url.png#

PSVITA 0.930 action texture newopen url.png

Found within webbrowser_action_plugin.rco is a low-resolution image of a sea animal. The file is also duplicated twice in the RCO under the names action_texture_open_url.png and action_texture_saveimage.png, meaning that this is a placeholder. The file metadata suggests this was created on May 26, 2010.

tex_liveboard_facebook_list.gim#

PSVITA 0.930 tex liveboard facebook list.png

Found in dummyapp_b_plugin.rco is a placeholder for a Facebook post list.

texture_app_launch_icon.gim#

PSVITA 0.930 texture app launch icon.png

A dummy app icon, which simply just says "APP".

Unused Strings#

Found in webbrowser_core_plugin.rco.

<string src="Oh! 404yahhhhhhhh" id="not_faund" />

page_sample_plugin.rco in the Near app also has early English translations:

<string src="NEAR use location information. Do you want?" id="msg_checkin_dialog_1" />
<string src="Your emo status" id="msg_emoticon_explanation" />
<string src="Each ohter" id="msg_title_profile_filter_each_other" />
  <string src="祗園精舎の鐘の声、諸行無常の響きあり。娑羅双樹の花の色、盛者必衰の理をあらはす。おごれる人も久しからず、唯春夜の夢のごとし。たけき者も遂にはほろびぬ、偏に風の前の塵に同じ。" id="str_text2" />
  <string src="春はあけぼの。やうやう白くなりゆく山ぎは、すこしあかりて、紫だちたる雲のほそくたなびきたる。" id="str_text3" />
<string src="色は匂へど 散りぬるを 我が世誰ぞ 常ならん 有為の奥山 今日越えて 浅き夢見じ 酔ひもせず" id="str_text4" />

It also has 3 Japanese poems used as placeholder text.
