To do: |
Included in the scraping of archived TestFlight CDNs is a near-final build of My Muppets Show (originally called "My Singing Muppets" in the app name and "The Muppets Show" in text strings) from March 16, 2013, nearly two months before the final version was built. This build includes many differences from the final game, like early Muppet designs, animations, and early vocal Muppet sounds that are placeholder recordings by composer Dave Kerr and his wife Maggie Park.
App Icon and Opening Image#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
The icon of the prototype is based on the Mammott app icon used in older versions of MSM, with the background being changed to green and Mammott being replaced by Animal. The final icon uses a different background, this time yellow, a different image of Animal, and a blue border with the Disney logo in the top right corner.

When opening the app, an image briefly appears for a second while the app loads. In the prototype, this is a black background with what seems to be an earlier design of Kermit in the bottom right corner. In the final game, this was changed to be a large image of Animal wearing headphones with a red shine coming from behind him.
Graphical Differences#
Muppets#
Basically every Muppet in this prototype differs in design from the final release of the game. This prototype seems to have been a point where they were changing the designs of every Muppet to how they are seen in the final game, as the more generally known and popular Muppets such as Animal, Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy, and Floyd are very similar to their final designs, with just a few aspects being different or unfinished. The icons used on HARV-E (originally the Computer in the prototype) are also styled differently from the final icons, being mostly flat-shaded with a black outline. The early icon for Sweetums actually ended up making it into the final release unchanged.
Animal#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
In this prototype, Animal's design is almost the same as the final release, but with unfinished sprites for his drumkit, seat, and shadows.
Rowlf#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Rowlf has a different design in this prototype, having a black upright piano and seat instead of a wooden piano and seat, and having early, less polished art.
Sam Eagle#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Sam Eagle's early design, using a brighter blue with less detail. His upper body is also larger, his head is taller, and his lower legs have feathers.
Like the final design, Sam Eagle's early design also has an unused separated eyebrow sprite.
This design, or at least a later iteration of it, can actually be seen in the final game on the Presidential Pennant decoration.
Floyd#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Floyd's sprites are generally similar between the prototype and final game, with a few notable differences like his shoulder pads and shadow. He also became bigger in the final animations, got a ponytail, and had his body split into two separate sprites. His shadow sprite in the prototype has a different size than the final design, but when changing it, the developers forgot to update its anchor point in his animations, causing it to be off-center.
Durwood Clapper / Mr. Clapper#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Durwood Clapper, along with every other original Muppet in this game, have completely different designs in the prototype, seemingly being based more on human puppets than actual Muppets. His name was also originally Mr. Clapper, which was likely a placeholder.
A placeholder sprite for Durwood Clapper also exists, which is used in his Alley animations. This design is used in his icon in the prototype.
Big Mo / Mr. Pots and Pans#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Big Mo's early design, when he was originally named Mr. Pots and Pans. He was changed from a man with ginger hair to having brown fur, and he was also made larger in his final design. The pots and pans remained basically the same in the final design, aside from them being split into multiple sprites for animation purposes, and the spoons were changed to be yellow.
Rats#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
The early design of the Rats, featuring a different head shape with their eyes on the top of their heads. They were both brown, with the left rat having its fur changed to be gray in the final design, and their vests were gray instead of blue. The angle of the book that the right rat stands on was also changed, along with its color being changed to a brighter purple. A remnant of this early design could be found in the final game in version 1.0.2, as its placeholder bin for the Alley featured the rig of the prototype design, which appeared corrupted as it used the sprites of the final Rats design.
Jax Strumley / Mr. Guitar#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Jax Strumley's early design, when he was originally called Mr. Guitar, which retains many aspects from his final design aside from the skin color and sprite polish. The early design also has glasses, while the final design does not, and the final design was made slightly bigger.
Snowth#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Snowth's early design, which is darker than the final design and isn't as polished.
A placeholder sprite for Snowth also exists, which is used in its Alley animations. This design is used in Snowth's icon in the prototype.
The Divettes / The Twins#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
The early design for the Divettes, who were originally called the Twins and were young girls instead of adults.
Zoot#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Zoot's early design, which could actually be seen in a few clips from the trailer for My Muppets Show. There are also clips in that trailer that use the final Zoot design, suggesting that his design was changed shortly before the trailer was made. This design can also be seen in the final game in the Muppets shop icon.
Miss Piggy#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Miss Piggy, uh... seems to have had a wardrobe malfunction, as her dress is completely missing. This was likely due to the animations for it not being complete. Aside from the missing dress, her design here is almost identical to the final game, though the color of her gloves and shoes are different, being purple instead of pink, and the puffs on her dress's shoulders don't exist. Her early gloves can be seen in the final game in the Muppets shop icon. She was also made much larger in the final game. Her icon could possibly be the design that her placeholder Alley animations are supposed to use.
The sprites for her dress actually do exist in this beta, but are unfinished.
Gonzo#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Gonzo's early design, which similar to Zoot and Miss Piggy, can be seen in the Muppets shop icon in the final game.
Mahna Mahna#
|
Prototype |
Final (1.0.0) |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Mahna Mahna's early design, where he was shorter and had more vibrant colors (at least compared to his design in release 1.0.0), and his hair was seemingly misinterpreted to be more like a lion's mane.
The design seems to specifically be based off this photo of Mahna Mahna used as a promotional image for the Jim Henson's Fantastic World touring exhibit, down to the colors and the shape of his hair.
Kermit#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Kermit's design here is very similar to in the final game, with the only differences being the brighter greens and less drastic shading. His rig is also a little different, with his arms and legs being positioned differently, almost as if he was originally facing towards the camera, and his mouth being slightly lower.
Fozzie#
Prototype |
Final (1.0.0 - 1.1.0) |
Final (1.1.1) |
|---|---|---|
![]() |
![]() |
|
Fozzie is also very similar to his final design, interestingly not having increased saturation like his design in version 1.1.1. Aside from that, his body is thinner in the beta and he was made much larger in the final game, with the part of his tie around his neck also being made longer. The early design can be seen in the Muppets shop icon in the final game.
Swedish Chef#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Swedish Chef's early design notably has a red and white pattern at the bottom of his apron that was removed in his final design. A few other aspects of this design, like his arms and spoon, are unfinished and use solid colors. Just like every other Muppet that appears in the final game's Muppets shop icon, this design can be seen there too.
Sprites for Swedish Chef's whisk and spatula can also be found in this beta, where they aren't used. Like with the spoon, they use solid colors as a placeholder. The whisk would later end up being used in Swedish Chef's Big House animations in the final game, while the spatula wouldn't be used at all.
Beaker#
|
Prototype |
Final (1.0.0) |
|---|---|
|
|
|
Beaker's early design, where he is much shorter than his final design and has softer shading.
Stages#
Every stage in this version of the game is different in one way or another. The first stage is almost identical to the release version, just with a different, unfinished shading style, alongside slightly different parts of the stage, like the curtains. Meanwhile, the other two stages are almost completely different from their release versions, with Kitchen being slightly different, though still bearing resemblance to its release version, while the Alley (now known as Rooftop) stage is a completely different stage altogether.
Muppet Theater#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
The early design of the Muppet Theater stage, featuring an entirely different lighting and shading style, with some of the sprites also being slightly different. The stage's backdrop is also different, featuring a fire exit door in the center of the stage, rather than just the posters on the wall as seen in the final version. Most notably, the sprites for the curtains are different, with everything else just being slight differences.
Kitchen#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
The early design of the Kitchen stage, featuring an early sketch-like appearance, with only half of the stage truly being colored. Instead of a wall being behind the stage, it originally had a large array of windows, which you would be able to look through to see the backdrop for the stage. All 3 of its backdrops are sprites from Big Blue Bubble's other game, Fling a Thing.
Big House (Alley)#
|
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
The original concept for what would later turn into the Big House, the Alley. It is almost a completely different stage as to what it turned out to be, with every aspect of it being different, leaning more towards, as the name suggests, an alley look rather than the gulag theme it ended up turning into.
MSM Breeding Portrait Sheet#
A breeding portrait sprite sheet from My Singing Monsters exists leftover in the files of this prototype. The latest monster here is Yool, suggesting that My Muppets Show started development some time in December 2012 or January 2013.
Sound Differences#
Muppet Theater#
Animal#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
Animal's first track is different on the Muppet Theater, having an extra hit track on top of it. This early version of his sound is heard in his third track in the final game on top of his "Drums drums!" line. His second track has an extra layer of cymbals. It should be noted that Animal's third track does not exist in this prototype.
Rowlf#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Rowlf's first track in this prototype plays two octaves rather than only one like in the final sound.
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Similarly to his first track, his third track also has two octaves. His voice is a placeholder recorded by Dave Kerr, and he says "Oh yeah, move it baby now!" instead of "Okay, here we go now!"
Sam Eagle#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Sam Eagle is a placeholder recorded by Dave Kerr.
Floyd#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Floyd's first track mistakenly has a click at the beginning that isn't there in the final sound.
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Floyd's third track is a placeholder, with a rather goofy voice.
Snowth#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Snowth's sound is yet another placeholder by Dave. The voice is somewhat similar to Furcorn from My Singing Monsters, as that Monster was also voiced by Dave.
The Divettes / The Twins / Veggies#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
The Divettes (called The Twins in this beta) are placeholders by Dave. Interestingly, a slightly quieter duplicate of these sounds exists for the Veggies, implying these sounds were once meant for them.
Zoot#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Some notes in Zoot's first track are held longer compared to the final.
Mahna Mahna#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Mahna Mahna is again a placeholder sound by Dave.
Miss Piggy#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Miss Piggy is a placeholder sound, again sounding similar to Furcorn.
Kermit#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
Kermit uses some goofy sounding placeholder audio.
Fozzie#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Fozzie is a placeholder sound by Dave.
The Kitchen#
Floyd#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
Floyd's Kitchen sounds have a different rhythm in this version.
Rowlf#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
The volumes on some of Rowlf's notes in his second track, especially at the beginning, are louder. Additionally, near the end, some notes are changed.
Swedish Chef#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Swedish Chef is a placeholder sound by Dave.
Chickens#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
The Chickens are another placeholder by Dave, and they seem to say "Quack quack" rather than "Bock bock".
The Divettes / The Twins#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Here the Divettes/Twins seem to be voiced by Maggie Park, Dave's wife. Also in the second half, both voices go up in pitch rather than just one.
Veggies#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
The Veggies are a placeholder recording by Dave, and they sound very Furcorn-esque. Interestingly, this sound is in the final sound but quieter, and layered on top of the Muppet voice actor.
Gonzo#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
The lengths on some of Gonzo's notes are different, causing some notes to overlap.
Zoot#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Zoot's sound in the prototype has no gaps in between notes.
Beaker#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Interestingly, Beaker has 2 layers of voice and also doesn't say "meep".
Kermit#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Like Beaker, Kermit also has 2 layers of voice.
Rizzo#
In this build, Rizzo's sound is completely blank.
The Alley/The Big House#
The Big House, despite being the fifth stage released in the final game, has sounds in this beta build. This is from when it was originally the third stage and was called the Alley. There are still remnants of this stage in the release version of the game in text and some images.
Animal#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Animal's first track is half the length that it is in the final song. He's also missing his second track.
Dr. Teeth / Rowlf#
Prototype (Dr. Teeth) |
Final (Rowlf) |
|---|---|
Dr. Teeth originally played Rowlf's sounds in this version. His third track is half the length of Rowlf's third track in the final song.
Floyd#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
Floyd's first and third tracks were originally half the length that they are in the final song, and in his third track the notes are shorter than in the final sound.
Swedish Chef#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Swedish Chef is another placeholder vocal by Dave Kerr.
Chickens#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Here the Chickens go "la" instead of "bock".
Kizzy / Miss Tambourine#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Kizzy's (called Miss Tambourine in this version) sound is half its length of the final sound in this version.
Big Mo / Mr. Pots and Pans#
Big Mo (called Mr. Pots and Pans in this version) is missing his second track.
Rats#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
The Rats' first track has an extra note near the beginning that was removed in the final sound.
Sweetums#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Sweetums' sound is different in this version, and was likely changed due to Constantine's addition to the song.
Rizzo#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Rizzo's placeholder sound makes him not sound like a chain-smoker anymore. He is also missing his second track.
Mahna Mahna#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Mahna Mahna's placeholder sound follows the notes of Walter's sound. The sound is also half the length of the final sound.
Miss Piggy#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Miss Piggy's placeholder sound is half the length of her final sound and has reverb. You can also hear the song in the background.
Beaker#
Prototype |
Final |
|---|---|
Similarly to Miss Piggy, Beaker's sound is also half the length of his final sound and you can hear the song in the background, this time clearer.
Snowth#
Similarly to Rizzo on the Kitchen, Snowth's sound is completely blank.
Constantine#
Due to this stage not being connected to the Muppets Most Wanted movie yet, Constantine is completely absent.
