Startup and Menus#

Instead of a legal screen, an unusual tartan-patterned Rockstar North logo is used.

Startup Sequence#

This version still uses the old DMA intro previously seen in the PlayStation 2 version of Grand Theft Auto III.

Prototype

Before starting the game, we are given the option to choose the difficulty, highlighting that there are 3 difficulties compared to the 2 in the final version.

Selecting the "Easy" difficulty will activate a mini map on the radar. (Only works on some levels)

  • The Bonus Features exists in this prototype, but it has nothing yet.

The scenes still didn't have proper names and instead used their internal names, in addition, their order are different and a section for 2 more unknown levels exist which was later repurposed for the bonus level section in the final game.

Unused Weapons & Pickups#

  • Power-ups?

It seems that at some point of the development, prior to this prototype, power-ups were planned for the game.

  • Weapons & Pickups

Gameplay Differences#

  • Cash still features his prerelease look, featuring a different looking face and clothing.

Audio#

Unused Music#

TEST1.VB

Dated February 24, 2002. It was likely used as a main menu theme at one point.

COMBAT1.VB

A combat theme that's not heard anywhere in the prototype.

However, in the PCSX2 console when starting the game, it shows a message that two audio files are missing from the CD, which are COMBAT.VB and COMBAT_A.VB, It's most likely the developers forgot to update the filenames for the code that's trying to play the non-numbered ones by the time this prototype was compiled.

COMBAT3.VB

Another variation of combat audio.

COMBAT4.VB

Another audio that according to its name is for combat. It sounds the same as the main menu theme of the prototype but at a faster tempo. A portion of this and COMBAT3 exists as leftovers for a unused level failed song in the final game's files.

Unused Sounds#

AMBLOOP.VB Was probably used as an ambient sound effect. It's dated March 15, 2002.

EXECUTE1.VB Name suggests it was meant to be used for the executions, which are all silent in here. It's duplicated 4 times in the files.

Placeholder Voicelines#

Before they got Braix Cox, John Doman, etc. The voice lines had some of the developers talking over at this time.

Audio File

"These streets are being patrolled by gangs. They're scum, just like you, and they're here to hunt you down and cut you up. Remember: as far as the world's concerned you're dead already so don't hold back, it's them or you."

Audio File

Transcription

"Hot damn, that's the spirit! Hot stuff, Cash, hot stuff, no wonder you were given the chair. Well, I'll be frank with you, we set that chump up to see if you had what it takes to be our leading man. A little audition, if you will. Hah hah hah."

Audio File

Transcription

"From here on in we're gonna need some fighting skills to get through the action. We're talking toe-to-toe. I know you've got the balls, so just keep give me the best you've got and you'll deal with this pussy no problem."

Audio File

Transcription

"Now take your time, Cash, I see a few Hoods around these vans. Sorry, I should explain. Each gang has their... well, let's just call it their thing. These guys call themselves "The Hoods", but none of that should bother you. As far as you're concerned, they're meat, ok? Ok, on you go."

Audio File

Transcription

"Try reaching the abandoned shops up on the next floor, the stair is right over there. Oh, and give me some more of that cut-throat psycho action you illustrated so beautifully earlier. We're talking the "money shot", you with me?"

Audio File

Transcription

"Ok, there are some more of these shitheads hanging around the exit. Give me some grade-A honest-to-god gore and you'll be buzzed through the door."

Audio File

Transcription

"One of the little freaks is still running around. I told you, you get buzzed through the door when the action's in the can."

Audio File

Transcription

"It's a WRAP!! Attaboy Cash, you're a natural, I swear to god you are! No time to hang around, time is money! Let’s see how you handle the next scene…"

Audio File

Transcription

"Okay Cash, nice going. Now head back and smash that padlock."

Audio File

Transcription

"Okayyy, Put on a good show against this hooded fuck for me and it might help you outta here. Watch tho' this guy fights dirty."

Audio File

Transcription

"Your doing really good Cash!, It's almost over. This is the entrance to the cellar, find it."

Doing Time#

Audio File

Transcription

"Ah welcome, the idea of this little game is for you to execute all the hunters looking for you, that's if they don't find you first."

Audio File

Transcription

"Well done, you do still have some surprises left in you, make your way to the end of the cellblock, I have a few more for you."

Audio File

Transcription

"If you wanna get out of here, you gonna have to lose that guy and then make your way along the top of the cells to the shower block."

Audio File

Transcription

"If you wanna get in here, you gonna have to lose the attention of those hunters."

Audio File

Transcription

"Get outta my fucking way."

Audio File

Transcription

"Those fucking guys can't get all right."

Kill the Rabbit#

Audio File

Transcription

"Follow the White Rabbit! You're one ugly fuckin' Alice though!"

Audio File

Transcription

"Fine shooting! Head for the door below the control room!"

Audio File

Transcription

"Watch those cells closely! Pick them all off!"

Audio File

Transcription

"Almost there, get through this last section anyway you can!"

Audio File

Transcription

"What can I say? You were a good leading man, the audience will love you... don't expect any royalty cheques where you're going though!"

Audio File

"You did well! Very well. But every film has an ending and this is yours."
