The E3 2004 build of Halo 2 is a unique presentation intended to be paired with a live developer voiceover and demo during Microsoft's E3 2004 conference. This build was also playable on the show floor.

Game engine#

This build of the game requires an Xbox with 128MB of RAM, typically found on development hardware. However, it still runs on retail systems if the RAM upgrade is upgraded.

This version of the engine is known to have remnants of the infamous stencil shadows that were removed from the final game.

Only three map files are present, mainmenu.map, shared.map and zanzibar.map.

E3 2004

Final

This build retains the 2003 UI designs, but does not display build dates or login information on screen. The "Classified" option in the menu does nothing when selected.

Demonstration Cutscenes#

After loading into a multiplayer match on Zanzibar, pressing Back and White together will trigger the cutscene from the beginning of the E3 presentation. Press the combo once to show a Bungie logo screen, and again to start the opening cutscene. Press a third time to show the Zanzibar map overview from the end of the demo. This mode is handled entirely in map scripting, and the scripts can be successfully run in newer versions of the game. Watch on YouTube

HUD#

The HUD is mainly Halo 1 assets, with a new shield bar in the top right.
