That cel-shaded sequel was announced under the nameThe Wind Waker 2during your talk at GDC 2004, prior to E3, was it not?
Aonuma: The Wind Waker 2 title drew from the fact that, once we'd finished with The Wind Waker, we'd decided to develop the next game on the same engine. We felt that there was still more that could be done using cel-shading, so that's the name we chose to represent our project. That being said, at the time of my talk at GDC, we'd also already started work on a realistic Zelda game. What I said wasn't a lie, though. I announced we were currently developing The Wind Waker 2, and the realistic Zelda was a part of that. The project we were calling The Wind Waker 2 went on to become The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which is coming out for the Nintendo DS. Not only is it an extension of our original ideas, we're also adding a new sense of fun to the game by making use of the DS's unique touchscreen. I hope fans will look forward to it. 1
