DS Conference 2006#
|
|
This needs some investigation. |

The screenshot on the DS Conference 20061 website and the video at the conference itself appear to be of the same version.
Level
- The section in the screenshot doesn't appear in the final. The block and bush arrangement and the position relative to the mid-point suggest it was an early version of the section with the Vine-containing block.
- The midway point is near the centre of the level, rather than near the end.
HUD
- The Coin and Timer icons have slightly different appearances and are centred.
- The Progress Bar marker for the Midway Point is a line, rather than a flag.
- The player icon on the progress bar is higher up than the final.
- The 'w' before the level number is a lower case, unlike the final game.
- Various elements are placed and sized differently in this version.
- The item storage only has one slot now.
- The three empty circles appear to be the first sign of the Star Coins, or something like them.

To do: |
These new screenshots first appear in a Famitsu issue from around this month2 and seem to have been released to the general press later.3
Early |
Final |
|---|---|
![]() |
Early version of what in the final is World 4-Ghost House. The candle flame in the background is missing, and the "?" Block is a darker yellow instead of gray
Most resembles World 3-1, the only level with Cheep Chomps, but doesn't seem to directly match any part of that level.
Early |
Mockup |
Final |
|---|---|---|
![]() |
An early version of what in the final is World 3-B. Compared to the final level, the theme is desert, there are coins on top of the pipes (something that doesn't happen at all in the final level) and all the pipes are green. By modding in the desert background to the final level, and you can see that the background scrolling amount suggests, assuming the scrolling parameters were the same, that the placement of this section along the level is the same in this build and in the final.
Early version of what in the final is World 6-4, now seeming to use the final mountain background.
This screen shows an early version of Unused Level 5. This shows that the level was removed after the desert tileset was changed to the final/near-final version. Also notable is the Spiny, which uses the wrong sprite-set in the final.
Apparently an early version of what in the final is World 6-1.
|
Early |
Final |
|---|---|
|
|
Most resembles World 8-4. World 8-4 has the dark land theme, whereas this has the jungle theme. Blocks, coins and terrain were rearranged. You can see the unused "junglekusa" actor from the final game in use here, with earlier graphics. Judging from the background scrolling distance, assuming the scrolling parameters were the same, the equivalent objects are in the final level are not in the same location in the early level.
Many of these screenshots can also be found in Nintendo Dream issue 144, released sometime in February4

Early version of what is World 2-4 in the final. Interestingly it is a grassland level here, but a desert level in the final. In another screenshot [todo], World 2-4 is shown on the map as a grassland level. The final level does not have any desert-specific elements, other than the swelling ground and stone terrain blocks from the desert tileset.

|
Level
- The patch of mushrooms on the ground moved a block to the right in the final.
Visual
- The Coin and Timer icons have slightly different appearances.
- The Midway Point Flag has a stand, like in the sequels.
- The player icon on the progress bar is higher up than the final.
- The streak behind the lives HUD is a different shape.
- Red Koopa has a darker shell than the final. The old palette is left unused in the game's files in root/obj/nokonok0256_ncl.bin.
Misc
- Oddly, Mario has activated the midway flag, yet is behind its location.
- Despite the score popups appearing, the player seems to have gained a massive 0 points from smashing up the level.

|
Levels
- The first Toad House is green instead of red.
Visual
- Lines connecting worlds are blue. Also, the lines that connect locked worlds are not dotted.
- The Star Coin counter has a slightly different appearance and is on the top-right.
Misc
- Some points on the touchscreen's map overview are misplaced unlike the final.
- The Star Coin Signs were moved back and forth a bit, between the prerelease version and the final. The 2 boxes containing the map overview and the "World 1" text were moved up slightly for the final.

- Mario isn't reacting to Bowser
- The boss icon is a skull that is unused in the final and is replaced with Bowser Jr.'s icon.
Gameplay Screen: The mushroom platform is longer and has some Coins and three Goombas.
Information Screen: The Star Coin graphics on the bottom screen have black eyes.
There is a Fire Bubble here unlike the final.
The Cheep Cheep is higher.
A progress bar is visible, something that's not possible in the final game in this location.
The singleplayer mode button is labelled 'Mario' instead of xx and parts of the logo and copyright text have an ugly-looking light green border.

To do: |
The North American manual contains a pre-final screenshot used in explanation of the map screen on page 12. It shows an early bottom screen for the World 1 map. It doesn't correspond to the top screen screenshot on the same page. The manuals for the other regions and the PDF versions of the manual available on the official Nintendo websites were corrected.

- Originally Mini Mario had a big nose.
- Mega Mario used to be limited to specific stages, but Miyamoto wanted it to be usable in all stages
- "At first, [the world maps] was more bare-faced and had a childish atmosphere, like a miniature amusement park. Since the game featuring Mario is aimed at all ages, we were careful not to make it look too cute."
- They wanted the controls to be simple.
