"climb" Animations#

climbing

File Date: July 18, 1995. A different climbing animation which depicts Mario climbing a wall, possibly a chain link fence or ladder. Mario cannot climb up the sides of walls in the final game.

File Date: July 11, 1995. An animation of Mario floating in water. This was used in the Shoshinkai 1995 demo..

floatmove

File Date: December 19, 1995. Mario slowly wading through water. This was not used in the Shoshinkai '95 demo.

floattake

File Date: August 23, 1995. An early animation of Mario grabbing something, such as a shell, while underwater.

floathold

File Date: August 23, 1995. Mario holding onto something underwater, presumably a shell or cork box.

File Date: August 23, 1995. Mario throwing something, such as a shell while underwater.

Waking Up Animation#

giddywakeup

File Date: September 19, 1995. An earlier animation of Mario waking up. Based on the name, it would have triggered when A was pressed while sleeping.

"hatwait" Animations#

hatwait1

File Date: December 26, 1995. An earlier animation of Mario taking his cap off after completing a goal, like a mission or a Star.

hatwait2

"log" Animations#

loglanding

File Date: July 11, 1995. An animation where Mario lands on a narrow log or plank.

logwait

File Date: July 11, 1995. Seems to be a nervous Mario balancing precariously on a narrow log.

logwalkL

File Date: July 11, 1995. Mario stepping his left leg ahead on a narrow log.

logwalkR

File Date: July 11, 1995. Similar to the above, but with Mario stepping with his right leg.

logwaverL

File Date: July 11, 1995. Seems to be for Mario almost falling off a narrow log, maybe for being too close to the edge, or knocked off balance by a strong gust of wind. Interestingly, this animation was repurposed for use in the 64DD boot logo.

logwaverR

File Date: July 11, 1995. The same animation as above, but Mario is facing right instead.

"mant" Animations#

Leftover animations from the Cape powerup. Mant means Mantle/Cape.

mantgear

mantlanding

File Date: September 19, 1995. Mario preparing to land after floating.

mainlandend

File Date: September 19, 1995. Mario landing after floating, continued from "mantlanding". Mislabeled as "mainlandend", should be "mantlandend".

"mario_slip" Animations#

mario_slip_accele

Seems to be Mario preparing to speed up while sliding. Of note, this animation uses an earlier version of the animation format, even having different joint orders, making this one of the earliest files in the leak. Due to the earlier animation format, this file doesn't contain a header, and thus has no date.

mario_slip_brake

Mario braking while he is sliding, possibly when the player holds back on the joystick. This animation also uses an earlier version of the animation format with different joint orders, making this another one of the earliest files to be found in the leak. Due to the earlier animation format, this file doesn't contain a header, and thus has no date.

"notaking" Animations#

notaking

File Date: August 31, 1995. Based on the name, it appears to have occurred when taking or picking up something failed.

notaking (2)

Part 2 of the above animation, where Mario returns to his regular idle position.

"oshin" Animations#

oshinwait

File Date: February 6, 1996. Mario hunched forward covering his face. "oshin" translates to "nausea", so it might've been when Mario got nauseous. This potentially occurred on the ship in Jolly Roger Bay, which has unreferenced shake code in the files.

Mama Mia, I can't-a believe I'm not-a feeling too good!

oshinwalk

File Date: January 6, 1996. A similar animation to the last one, but with Mario walking.

"squatkick" Animations#

squatkickstart

File Date: January 23, 1996. The start of the "Squat Kick", a move that was cut early on. Based on the name, it was likely replaced with the Sweep Kick move in the final game.

squatkicking

File Date: January 23, 1996. Mario in the middle of doing the Squat Kick.

squatkickend

File Date: January 23, 1996. The ending animation for the Squat Kick.

swimcarry

File Date: August 23, 1995. An earlier animation of Mario carrying something while swimming.

swimjump

swimstop

File Date: July 11, 1995. Mario ceasing swimming, synced to floating, maybe meant for when the player stops making him swim.

swimsoftdown

File Date: November 7, 1995. An early version of Mario drowning, but he is spinning instead of staying in one direction like the final game.

Taking Animation#

taking

File Date: July 11, 1995. Mario picking something up, but lifting it instead of grabbing it.

"water" Animations#

waterstand

File Date: January 29, 1996. Similar to swimstop but faster. Likely meant for landing underwater, possibly with the Metal Cap.

waterwait

File Date: January 29, 1996. Mario idle while underwater, which is similar to his normal standing idle animation as he moves his head from left to right. It might have been for an early version of the Metal Cap, as it syncs well with the running animation.

Star Dance Animation#

windemoAold

File Date: November 7, 1995. Mario performing an extended version of his Power Star victory dance. This is the only animation in the leak that seems to be motion captured.

Lost Animations#

Animations that no longer exist but are referenced by names in "shapedef". Names will be presented with their animation reference names, as their actual file names are unknown.

animeCannonJump#

Likely for leaving the cannon, instead of firing. The final game has no way to leave the cannon without firing.

animeDash#

An unused dashing animation, likely the one seen in the above concept art. It bears a similarity to Wario's Dash Attack.

(Source: Super Mario 25th Anniversary Collection Booklet/Super Mario 25th History Booklet)

A somewhat-broken mockup made using the final game's assets.

animeUTurnCont#

Possibly for turning repeatedly. A duplicate, unreferenced animation exists in the final game, but shapedef indicates it was originally a separate file.

animeTitleDemo#

Possibly the animation seen in 1995 B-Roll footage. Was likely used for the early title screen with RCP_MarioTitle and RCP_TitleLuigi.
