This is a sub-page of Development:Duke Nukem Forever/1996 Design Documents.
Both DUKE4EPIS3 and DUKEEPIS4 were last modified on 19/8/1996 just a minute apart of each other. very strangely neither document was moved over into a Word Doc.
IV. Mission #3 - New LA#
A. Area #1 - Red Light District#
Much like the city areas in Duke 3D, here we have the nude dancers and other World of Darkness memorabilia. Hopefully we could also work in things like futuristic low-rider pimp cars, whores on the streets, neon signs, thugs, and so on.
B. Area #2 - LA Freeway#
Duke on a Hawg, just like Jet Ski stuff. Duke should have to encounters with a low flying chopper or other flying vehicle. Vans that pull up and let baddies on motorcycles leap out the rear. Road warrior type vehicles with guns mounted on them. An of course, OJ Simpsons white Bronco tootling along.
C. Area #3 - Downtown#
This level would make extensive use of the jet pack again. Duke would fly around amongst sky scrapers, office complexs, and a big parking garage. Maybe we could even work in a chance to drive the Hornet boss from episode 2.
D. Area #4 - Casino#
E. Area #5#
F. Area #6#
V. Mission #4 - Duke Nukem Theme Park#
A. Area #1#
Wild Sonic the Hedgehog type level. Lots of neon lights, carousels, spinning things, spring boards. Bumper cars. Hordes of streakers.
* B. Area #2 - Outer Space Land#
Duke dons his magnetic boots and heads out through the airlock into this simulated outer space environment. Duke will be walking around both outside and inside a space station. Duke's boots are magnetic so he can just walk normally up walls and upside down on the ceiling. For best effect, I would like to have a Super NES style level that would always show Duke standing upright normally, but we have the level rotate around Duke depending on his orientation.
C. Area #3 - The Ice Box#
This was just a kind of wild idea I came up with. What if Duke Land had a big huge refridgerator as an attraction? It would be really popular on cold days. For game purposes it would just be a really weird level. A diffent option would just be for it to be a normal sized fridge but Duke got shrunk down to bug size to explore it. At any rate, Duke is small in relation to all the huge items in the refridgerator.
1. Appearance and Layout
We could have a few distinctly different regions on this level.
a. The Freezer
- This would have the kind of items you'd typically find in a freezer, but remember this is a really -huge- freezer, where everything is scaled to huge proportions. Make sure Duke's breath is visible on this level. (or any other cold level, come to think of it.)
-
i. Ice Cube Trays
- The icy parts would be slippery, and some ice cubes might be missing, leaving a small pit for Duke to fall into.
-
ii. Giant Frozen Fish
- The tail has been cut off, I guess. Duke can go inside the fish's mouth and the side of the fish cuts away so that we can see Duke exploring the fish's innards.
-
iii. Big Box o' Arm & Hammer
- The enemies (or Duke) knock this over, dumping a huge pile of baking soda that maybe allows Duke to climb to higher areas, or perhaps clouds up and obscures the area, or traps enemies.
-
iv. Ice Cream
- This stuff melts as Duke walks across the surface, so that he soon becomes mired in mud and must free himself by jumping.
-
v. Frost Buildup
- The owner has neglected this too long, and now Duke must blast his way through vast walls of brittle, sharp ice.
-
vi. Frozen Peas
- Shoot the bag open and peas spill out and roll everywhere. Enemies might pick them up and throw them.
-
vii. Can of Coke
- If any of Duke's cans of Coke appear on this level, they should explode.
b. The Fridge
Duke slips through a door and finds himself in the less cold but equally bizarre refridgeration area.
-
i. Apples/Potatoes
- Something to shoot your way through.
-
ii. Tomatoes/Eggs
- Big round things that the enemy could roll or throw at Duke. Makes a huge mess.
-
iii. Carton of Milk
- Should have a funny "missing" picture on the size. Shoot holes in it and milk spills out everywhere. Maybe we could make some kind of "Got Milk?" joke.
-
iv. Jell-O
- We could handle this a couple of ways. Either it could be a really wobbly surface for Duke to walk on, or maybe he could swim in it like water. At any rate, we should have funny things suspended in it. Enemies... severed heads... marshmallows... whatever.
-
v. Leftovers
-
Hideous terrible monster could leap out of a questionable looking Tupperware container and attack Duke. Or Duke could
swim in it.

D. Area #4 - The Tunnel of Love#
Another Jet Ski zone. This one takes place in a large, dark tunnel. The water is a menacing black. Evil things dwell here.
* E. Area #5 - Inside Dr. Proton#
Duke rushes into Dr. Proton's secret hideout in Duke World, to find Dr. Proton laying unconcious (sic) on an operating table. In his hand he clenches the following note, which Duke reads aloud to the player: "Well played, Mr. Nukem. You have once again successfully foiled my scheme. I cannot escape, so I just took the liberty of having a microscopic bomb surgically implanted somewhere in my body. The device is small, but powerful enough to level L.A. It has a dead man switch, so to speak. You kill me, the bomb goes off. I suggest you just leave before things get messy." The note needs work but you get the idea. So Duke jumps onto the table and turns the shrink ray onto himself, shrinking himself down to a tiny enough size to climb into Dr. Proton's body through some oriface.
* 1. Level Layout
We're inside Dr. Proton's body. It'd be dark, so Duke should use his little personal light, as mentioned elsewhere. Duke will need to blast all the various defense mechanisms in Dr. Proton's body. We can get creative here, since Dr. Proton may very likely have cybernetically enhanced himself. Anyway, Duke will be blasting his way past vessel walls and swimming around in blood (or maybe even thestomach or bladder.) He is searching for the bomb, which we'll find inside some key point in Proton's body. Either the heart or the brain, I should think. After finding and destroying the bomb, Duke will unshrink himself while still inside Proton's body, making a hideous mess and doing in Proton nicely.
F. Area #6 - Secret Level - Bungee Jumping Again#
This secret level is another Bungee Jumping experience for Duke. Since this takes place in a theme park, the Bungee jump can be another one of the attractions, mounted on a brightly lit tower. Optionally, the Bungee Cord can be attached to a giant statue of Duke (from his nose perhaps).
1. The Bungee Cord
- Duke will bounce up and down several times. He can swing to the left or to the right, using the arrow keys, although I think he should have less control than Earthworm Jim did. He has to swing by shifting his weight in the direction of the swing in order to swing farther to that side before swinging back to the left. Duke can still aim his gun and shoot at the bad guys.
2. Level Layout
- This level would be very tall and narrow. The objective is to kill the Bungee Jumping Bad Eva who is also trying to kill him. THis is their final confrontation. Once she is defeated, the level ends.
3. Enemies
-
a. Protonite Jet Pack Soldiers (or Duke Nukem Clones)
- These guys are worse, since they can control where they're headed, and they're shooting at Duke! These seem to appear a lot in the game.
-
b. Evil Eva
- We're finally going to waste this bitch. She's also bouncing around and trying to kill Duke either by grappling with him or by shooting him down.
4. The End
- Once bad Eva is defeated, Duke just goes on to level #4.
Way station at the end of every level?
