Unused Room Layout#

West Hyrule#

In West Hyrule, there are two areas that have no pointers associated to them and therefore are never seen in the game:

Unused Cave 1

TAOL_Room_4EDC_HW.png

This area looks like a plain grotto with no relief and a lock door. Its data is located at 0x4EDC.

Use the codes 6A1F:34 - 6A5E:19 - 6A9D:03 - 8529:CC - 852A:8E to activate a location that is placed just to the right of North Castle on the map.

Unused Cave 2

FDS

NES

This area was most likely meant to contain an item, judging by its structure. It appears you were supposed to enter it by falling through the shaft on the right. The black part on the left is actually made of individual breakable blocks, like the ones in the palaces. Every area in the game has data for fully functional breakable blocks, but West and East Hyrule don't have any graphics associated with these; if you fell in this room without the Handy Glove, you would be stuck. Its data is located at 0x4F1C in the NES version, and 0xD35 in the GROUND-0 file in the FDS version (0x10D5C in the full disk image).

Use the codes 6A1F:34 - 6A5E:19 - 6A9D:43 - 6ADC:80 - 8529:0C - 852A:8F to activate a location that is placed just to the right of North Castle on the map.

Death Mountain and Maze Island#

0x62CA - Room:3B-3C-3D-3E

A nighttime swamp using the forest's color palette and with no enemies. This area was likely used as a combat phase in the Death Mountain map. However, it is accessible by placing a lava tile on the map. Use the codes 6A2C:26 - 6A6B:07 - 6AAA:3B/3C/3D/3E to activate a location that is placed just after the entry of Death Mountain map.

This area was seen in "Family Computer Magazine, No. 1, January 16, 1987" and in the first version of the Japanese booklet of the game.

Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:39 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8EA6 - Room:11

An earlier version of an area leading to New Kasuto with four Tektites instead of three in the final version. The exit to the right leads to a desert "room 12". See below :

0x8CE8 - Room:12

A desert area featuring an enemy group intended for a cave in Death Valley. The exit to the left leads to cavern "room 11". It's possible this area wasn't a desert during development, but rather a cavern. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:11 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8E72 - Room:15

This area is a copy of an area in Death Valley, but the enemy group contains an incorrect pointer A5A4. By correcting the pointer to 8A6C, the same Girobokkus from the area appear in the game, but without the two blue Moas. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:15 - 85CB:BC - 85CC:71 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8FB6 - Room:16

An old cavern with three Tektites and a treasure bag of 500 points. The floor seems to continue despite the wall on the right. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:16 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8D04 - Room:24

There are no field tiles in the southern part of the East Hyrule map, but the area is still present in the game data and with both enemy variations. Three blue Bots and three Tektites for the small enemy.

And one Zora and three Tektites for the big enemy. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:24 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8FCA - Room:7D

This area of Death Valley is located in the exact same spot as another area of Death Valley containing a treasure bag of 500 points. It uses an old enemy group where only one Aruroda is present. It's very likely that the area was different at some point during development. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:7D to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.

0x8F37 - Room:B8

In the US/EU version, the original king's tomb is changed and moved elsewhere. However, in East Hyrule, a copy of the original king's tomb still exists and contains several blue Moas. Use the codes 6A16:34 - 6A55:08 - 6A94:B8 to activate a location that is placed just to the right of dock on the East Hyrule map.
