The Twin Blades of Azzinoth#

The Twin Blades of Azzinoth'''

Item Level 100

Binds when picked up

Unique

One Hand

Sword

87-90 Damage

Speed 1.80

(49.17 Damage per second)

Equip: Consumed by the fury of Illidan: 1400 attack power bonus versus Demons. 30% melee haste.

Use: Detaches the twin blades, forming two separate warglaives.

Requires level 70

Sell Price: 27g 11s 62c

This is an early version of the Twin Blades of Azzinoth, and has been in the game since before the first expansion. According to the lore, the Twin Blades of Azzinoth could be connected to each other to form a single weapon, and then split apart to form separate weapons. However, when the Twin Blades were introduced as obtainable legendary items in Burning Crusade, they are separate items that instead make up an item set and can not be connected. This early version stays true to the lore.

While it had statistics on it at one time, they have since been removed from the weapon. The on-equip effect still functions as described, however.

Warglaive of Azzinoth (Right)#

Use: Connects the twin warglaives of Azzinoth, forming the Twin Blades of Azzinoth.

Requires level 70

Sell Price: 24g 62s 43c

This is an early version of the right half of the Twin Blades of Azzinoth. It can be used to create the twin blades item once again if the Left half is also present. Though it had statistics at one time, they have been removed from the item.

One Hand

Sword

28-31 Damage

Speed 1.00

(29.51 Damage per second)

Sell Price: 24g 71s 99c

This is an early version of the left half of the Twin Blades of Azzinoth. Like the right half, it had statistics at one time, which have now been removed.

Tigole's Trashbringer#

'''

Tigole's Trashbringer'''

Item Level 1

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Sword

6-8 Damage

Speed 3.00

(2.33 Damage per second)

"Trash getting you down?"

Sell Price: 1c

Tigole's Trashbringer is a joke item added during the Wrath of the Lich King alpha, given to Death Knights along with their talent points. 'Tigole' is the alias for Jeffrey Kaplan, who was the raid designer for WoW during Wrath.

Frostmourne#

'''

Frostmourne'''

Item Level 200

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Sword

158-237 Damage

Speed 4.00

(49.38 Damage per second)

Meta Socket

Equip: The wielder of Frostmourne will become the new Lich King.

Requires Level 80

Sell Price: 58g 74s 65c

Model data for Frostmourne has been in the game since the original launch in 2004, but was never used until Wrath of the Lich King's release in 2008. The item was shown off during the 2007 Blizzcon lore panel, in which they stated that it would likely never be available to players. In the canon, the sword has been destroyed after the Lich King's defeat in Icecrown Citadel.

The item's on-equip effect gives the player a Lich King buff, and changes their armor into that of the Lich King.

Ashbringer#

'''

Ashbringer'''

Item Level 76

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Sword

95-117 Damage

Speed 3.00

(35.46 damage per second)

Chance on hit: Blasts a target for 700 Fire damage.

Requires Level 60

"Blade of the Scarlet Highlord"

Sell Price: 14g 65s 31c

The Ashbringer is likely the most infamous unused item in the game. As it is a very important item in the lore, rumors and speculation surrounding the item and how to obtain it date all the way back since the original release of World of Warcraft, and were extremely common; feeding these rumors were NPC flavor text alluding to its existence, and the presence of a datamined Ashbringer item. The item has unique stats, and has always remained unavailable to players.

In Patch 1.11 with the release of the Naxxramas raid instance, the Corrupted Ashbringer was added and was obtainable to players, which seemingly sealed the item's place in the canon. However, it was revealed in Wrath of the Lich King that the Corrupted Ashbringer was instead in the hands of a different NPC, subsequently purified, and now rests in the hands of Tirion Fordring. What a retcon.

...However, it was revealed in 2015 that the Ashbringer will finally, after years and years of waiting, be available to players in the next expansion, Legion as a new Artifact quality weapon for Paladins. Took you long enough, Blizzard.

Everything said and done, this level 60 version of the item will no doubt never be available to players.

Crafty's Pole#

World_of_Warcraft-Crafty's_Pole.png

'''

Crafty's Pole'''

Item Level 200

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Fishing Pole

118 - 178 Damage

Speed 3.00

(49.43 damage per second)

Equip: Fishing skill increased by 1000.

Requires Fishing (1)

"Just holding this fishing pole makes you shiver with excitement. This is possibly the most amazing thing you've ever seen."

Sell Price: 37g 45s 38c

Crafty's Pole is the only legendary fishing pole item in the game. When equipped, it gives a 1,000 skill increase in Fishing, and only requires a fishing level of 1; it's obvious that this item is used for testing the fishing skill.

The name "Crafty" is either a running joke, reference to a developer, or a reference to the (obtainable) fish Old Crafty. Crafty is also the name of an unused companion pet.

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker DEPRECATED#

'''

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker DEPRECATED'''

Item Level 80

Binds when picked up

Unique

Main Hand

Sword

36 - 68 Damage

Speed 1.90

(27.59 damage per second)

+3 Agility

+5 Stamina

+5 Fire Resistance

+6 Nature Resistance

Requires Level 100

Sell Price: 12g 59s 28c

This is a copy of the Thunderfury legendary without the chance on hit effect. Though it is equippable, it has no model data. Interestingly, this item has always required level 100, even before Warlords of Draenor.

Fudgehammer#

'''

Fudgehammer'''

Item Level 600

Binds when picked up

Two-Hand

Mace

634 - 952 Damage

Speed 3.50

(226.70 damage per second)

+2 Attack Power

"Legendary weapon of Warlord Blackhand. Legendary status derived from its name, not its power."

Sell Price: 108g 83s 37c

This item is either an item used for testing, or a joke from Blizzard for dataminers. ..Probably the latter. The model is not unique.

Shard of the Defiler#

'''

Shard of the Defiler'''

Item Level 70

Binds when picked up

Unique

One-Hand

Dagger

27 - 32 Damage

Speed 1.10

(27.19 damage per second)

Requires Level 60

Sell Price: 11g 13s 35c

Shard of the Defiler is quite unique from the other legendaries. It has no real lore and has remained unused since before The Burning Crusade. Equipping it increases melee attack speed by 15%, chance to land a critical hit by 15%, and turns your player model into that of a demon by way of a spell effect known as Echo of Archimonde.

[PH] Troll Guitar#

'''

[PH] Troll Guitar'''

Item Level 115

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Mace

127 - 213 Damage

Speed 3.80

(44.86 damage per second)

+29 Stamina

+15 Critical Strike

+34 Attack Power

Use: Bust out a face melter. (1 Min Cooldown)

Requires Level 70

Sell Price: 14g 54s 10c

This Guitar weapon was likely planned to complement the other guitar weapons, Arcanite Ripper and Sun-Lute of the Phoenix King. However, it was never made available. Unfortunate, because the model is pretty kick-ass.

Alex's Test Beatdown Staff#

Binds when picked up

Unique

Two-Hand

Staff

84-127 Damage

Speed 3.00

(35.24 damage per second)

+718 Intellect

Requires Level 60

Alex's Test Beatdown Staff is obviously, well, a staff used to test. The intellect amount is absurdly high for a level 60 item.

+21 Stamina

+27 Attack Power

Requires Level 60

Sell Price: 11g 17s 37c

This was a placeholder for... an item that probably never made the final cut. It has a unique model that remains unused to this day.

Naxxramas Polearm [PH]#

'''

Naxxramas Polearm [PH]'''

Item Level 77

Binds when picked up

Two-Hand

Polearm

105-158 Damage

Speed 3.70

+28 Agility

+21 Stamina

Requires Level 60

Sell Price: 9g 77s 67c

This was a placeholder for The Eye of Nerub item, with which it shares a model. This version of the item has different statistics.

+249 Strength

+249 Stamina

+249 Critical Strike

+166 Haste

Sell Price: 1c

Added in Cataclysm, well after Naxxramas 40 had been removed, this is somewhat of a perplexing item. It uses the Ashbringer's model.

Bleakwood Hew#

Speed 2.70

Chance on hit: Enemy is inflicted with the Bleakwood Curse that reduces their magic resistances by 22. Can be applied up to 3 times.

Requires Level 49

Sell Price: 4g 61s 54c

While the model of this item is not unique, the colorization is. It's unknown why it was never made available.

Thorium Greatsword#

'''

Thorium Greatsword'''

Item Level 52

Binds when equipped

Two-Hand

Sword

62-93 Damage

Speed 3.60

(21.54 damage per second)

Requires Level 47

Sell Price: 3g 36s 21c

It's unknown why this sword has never been made available. It has unused plans as well.

Racial Lances#

Patch 3.1.0 introduced the Argent Tournament, and with it, mounted jousting. While there are only three lances the player is able to use, it seems that there were different lances planned for different races. The idea seems to have been scrapped early on, as only five racial lances were finished (Draenei, Gnome, Troll, Dwarf, and Human).

Martin's Broken Staff#

Martin's Broken Staff

Item Level 75

Binds when picked up

Main Hand

4-8 Damage

Speed 0.50

(12.53 damage per second)

Use: The caster commits suicide, instantly killing themself.

Sell Price: 2g 10s 53c

Martin's Broken Staff was changed from an Artifact quality item to a Poor quality item in Patch 3.3. In addition, its name was changed from Martin Thunder, its statistics were drastically reduced or removed, and the on-use effect was changed from killing everything around the caster to... killing the caster. It's likely that this change was done in response to the Martin Fury fiasco.
