The options and Kemco logo were moved up in the USA version to accommodate for more copyright text. The text font has also been changed.

Gameplay#

  • Rather than start you off when you select START at the title screen, the Japanese version asks for your name and blood type. Depending on selected blood type you'll get different parameters to your character. The available blood types are RH+/RH-, A, B, O, and AB (the US version always starts the game with the same character parameters to the blood type (RH+) A). There is a cheat in the Japanese version. While selecting the blood type, press Up + A + B on Controller 2 and RH+ will change to RH-. Now the whole set of blood types will change and its parameters are higher than RH+.

Blood Type

Character Parameters

(RH+) A

(RH+) B

ATP 100 / DFP 300

(RH+) O

ATP 480 / DFP 120

(RH+) AB

(RH-) B

(RH-) O

After the player selects their name and blood type, this scroll of text appears right before the player starts the game properly:

  • Clark Kent/Superman was given a more realistically proportioned sprite for the US release. However, none of the other character sprites were changed, making the new sprites stick out quite a bit.

Title Screen

The Japanese version had the Superman Theme from the 1978 film as the title music, as well as a longer arrangement when you play as Superman. However, both of these were removed in the USA release, and instead replaced by songs from a previous Kemco game, Indora no Hikari. It is thought Kemco's US division didn't or couldn't get the music rights. Some of the other in-game songs have been slightly altered as well. Some other songs from Indora no Hikari were also thrown in.

Staff Roll#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Check if the credits are still present in the NES version, but go unused.

The Japanese version contains a staff roll after the ending. Despite the staff roll being mostly in (understandable) English, the credits were removed from the North American release.
