Subnautica contains a whole load of unused items, most can easily be spawned in-game with the 'spawn' or 'item' commands in the developer console. These range from basic material elements to large pieces of the story and gameplay that were cut for various reasons.
Unused Alien/Precursor Technology#
Ion Cube Matrix#
The Ion Cube Matrix is an unused piece of technology that would've been made from several Ion Cubes and was originally involved in the construction of the Neptune Escape Rocket before being replaced with Ion Power Cells. It appears as a collection of standard Ion Cubes and can still be found with the scanner room if spawned somewhere. It has the ID: precursorioncrystalmatrix and can still be spawned with commands.
Red Alien Tablet#
The Red Alien Tablet / Precursor Key is an unused red variant of the alien tablets featured throughout the game. Like the other tablets, it would've likely disabled forcefields inside the alien bases. It has the ID: precursorkey_red and can still be spawned with commands.
White Alien Tablet#
The White Alien Tablet / Precursor key is another unused variant of the alien tablets that is featured in white. Like with the red tablet, it would've likely worked the same as the other tablets in order to disable forcefields. Strangely, when picked up, it takes up a larger space in the inventory than the other tablets, taking up 2x2 inventory slots instead of 1x1, despite the model being the same size. It has the ID: precursorkey_white and can still be spawned with commands.
Unused Alterra Technology#
Drill#
The Drill was a tool that was scrapped fairly early on in Subnauticas development. As the name suggests, it would've been used to drill/mine various outcrops for the player in order to gather resources, instead of the player having to break them themselves. In the final game, it lacks a proper icon, model and description/tool tip. It simply shows as a quesiton mark icon in the inventory and when dropped a small black cube, though the placeholder cube can be seen attached to the players arm or floating nearby (depending on the position the player is in) when this item is being held. Interestingly, it can still be binded to the quick slots like any normal tool, but apart from that, it is completely non-functional and the player can only drop it and pick it up. It has the ID:drill' and can still be spawned with commands.
Hardened Blade#
The Hardened Blade was a scrapped upgrade for the Survival Knife the player could make with the Modification Station. The differences are that it would deal more damage and had much a stronger durability before the feature was removed. Its model is the exact same as the Survival Knife and uses the same animations and sounds. It was cut for being a rather worthless upgrade, especially after the durability removal during development. It would be replaced by the Thermoblade as the main upgrade to the Survival Knife. It has the ID: diamondblade and can still be spawned with commands.
Lithium Ion Battery#
The Lithium Ion Battery was another scrapped upgrade item, this time meant for the Battery. It would've simply had double the energy of a regular Battery, and therefore would have lasted much longer. It re-uses the same icon and model as the regular Battery but has a unique name and description. The original crafting recipe for it is still in the game code, which can be unlocked using debug commands in Survival/Freedom/Hardcore mode, or unlocked by default in Creative mode (likely unintentional though). When the recipe is unlocked with commands or simply playing in Creative mode, it has its own special category in the Modification Station that also has a unique icon and the recipe is still fully functional. It was likely removed due to it being redundant when the Ion Batteries were added to the game. Alongside the leftover recipe, it can also be manually spawned with the ID: lithiumionbattery.
Terraformer#
The Terraformer was a scrapped tool that would've allowed the player to build, destroy and modify the terrain in the world. It was cut due to performance issues, especially with how it handled saving the changes to the world's terrain to the level files. It was featured a lot throughout Subnautica's early development and the developers were clearly disappointed on its removal as the description was changed when it was cut to: 'RIP terraformer'. Despite being cut, it can still be spawned in with the ID: terraformer, and it is still mostly functional with working animations, sounds and pop-up messages, though it will have a '?' placeholder icon due to the original one being removed. Its fragments still remain in the files as well and would've been scattered across many biomes and could be scanned to obtain a blueprint for it.
Transfuser#
The Transfuser was another scrapped tool that would've been used to sample the DNA of various creatures and then used with the cut Centrifuge which in turn, would've created consumable items that would change the effects of the player or other creatures. It can still be spawned with the ID: transfuser and like the Terraformer has unused an fragment model that would've been found in the world and scanned to obtain the blueprint. The description of this scrapped item was changed to 'congrats translators, we made a game!' during late development.
Unused Materials/Elements#
Inside the game, there a lot of unused material/element items that would be found in the world naturally and used in general crafting and progression. They can still be spawned with commands, but most will have a placeholder '?' icon, a small black cube model when dropped and placeholder tooltip information.
Amino Acid#
Amino Acid was a cut raw material that would've been involved in certain crafting recipes. It has the ID: aminoacids and can still be spawned with commands.
Battery Acid#
Not much is known about this material apart from its relation to the in-game Batteries, possibly for the crafting recipe. It has the name 'BatteryAcidOld' in-game and lacks a proper icon, model and description (however, it can be spawned using the ID of the same name).
Calcium#
Calcium was fairly important material that was originally involved in crafting recipe for bleach, as seen in development builds. It could be crafted from Coral Tube Samples before being removed and its role in the bleach crafting recipe was replaced by Coral Tube Samples (they very thing it was originally made of). It has the ID: calciumchunk and can still be spawned with commands.
Compost Creepvine#
Compost Creepvine was intended to be more of an action than a subtance, it would be a composted version of Creepvine samples that would be created and used on a Bioreactor to power bases, before getting scrapped. It has the ID: compostcreepvine and can still be spawned with commands.
Emery#
Emery was a scrapped abrasive material that would have been obtained from Limestone outcrops and originally could have crafted the Survival Knife and other similar tools. It was renamed to 'EmeryOld' in the final game and can be spawnned with the ID: emeryold.
Ethanol#
This scrapped material was intended to function as fuel for most, if not all the vehicles present in Subnautica. It was also going to be part of the crafting recipe of another scrapped material, Ethylene and could be harvested through the equally scrapped composter. It was renamed to 'EthanolOld' in the final game and lacks a proper icon, model and description. But it can be spawned it with the ID: ethanolold.
Ethylene#
Ethylene was intended to be involved with growing plants, before being scrapped and the overall way plants are grown in Subnautica being changed quite a bit. According to an old Google Document by the developers from around February 2014, it was going to be involved in the "stimulating and ripening [of] fruit, opening of flowers, shedding of leaves". It's name was changed to EthyleneOld by the final game and has placeholder assets as well. Though, it can still be spawned it with the ID: ethyleneold.
Flint#
Flint was a scrapped raw material that was going to be involved in creating flares. It could originally be found in the Safe Shallows, Kelp Forest, and Grassy Plateaus biomes, before ultimately getting scrapped. It was renamed to 'FlintOld', and like with some of the other items, it lacks a proper icon, model and description. It has the ID: flintold and can still be spawned in the final game with commands.
Magnesium#
Magnesium was a scrapped craftable resource that was involved in the crafting recipes of the Repair Tool and Flare and was made using Salt Deposit, likely cut for being quite useless and only really being useful at the very start of the game. It still has a functional model and icon and can be spawned with the ID: magnesium.
Mercury Ore#
Mercury Ore (also called Cinnabar) was going to be a natural element that could be harvested from several deep biomes and was going to be used in the recipe for the Cyclops Fire Suppression System. Its design features a reddish-colored rock with some fine detail, its icon, model and description are still intact in the files. It has the ID: mercuryore and can still be spawned with commands.
Sand#
Leftover from some of the old early access builds, sand was a scrapped item that could be picked up from anywhere on the seafloor and then used for various crafting materials like glass. In the final game, it lacks an icon in the inventory and the tooltip is also completely invisible (only displaying "Sand" in the inventory). Interestingly, dropping this item will create a small particle effect of falling sand directly in front of the player and therefore when the sand is dropped, it can't be picked up again. If the item is directly spawned onto the ground, it will appear as a small placeholder cube. However, the cube will actually be a pale sandy yellow color (instead of black like other unused items with the placeholder cube model). It has the ID: sandloot and can still be spawned with commands.
