Stardew Valley is a farmer simulation game with RPG elements developed by Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. Stardew Valley was both a critical and commercial success, selling over 10 million copies across all platforms by 2020.
Lit-Up Festival, Obscured Wizard#
In every festival map, the wizard can be spotted and has unique dialogue when/if the player approaches them. However, he's sometimes found out of bounds and can only be accessed via cheats.

Marrying Ineligible NPCs#
In early versions of the game, trying to make an ineligible character marry the player would crash the game. However, the way marriage code is handled was eventually changed, which led to ineligible NPCs becoming "eligible" as spouses through save game editing. Once an ineligible NPC is coded as "married" to a player, though, it becomes very apparent as to why the NPCs are ineligible:
- Marrying an ineligible NPC causes them to vanish from their usual place of residence, just like marrying an eligible one.
:* This can cause problems with progression. For example, marrying Robin or Willy will prevent them from going to work, and selling upgrades and goods.
- They will not have the expected "(married)" tag under their name in the Social tab.
:* However, if the RoommateMarriage element is set to true, then they will show up as "(housemate)". This has no change on the relationship aside from changing "kissing" to "hugging". (The heart of affection over the NPC will instead be a smiley face.)
- If "marrying" multiple NPCs, ineligible or not, only the person specified in the
spouseelement of the save file will move in with the player. The other(s) will simply go about their business as usual.
:* This also applies to the wedding ceremony -- only the "spouse" will be wed if that cutscene is set to play.
- Ineligible NPCs lack most sprites for special circumstances, such as sharing affection or dancing at festivals. In the case of the former, the NPC will generally look straight south when kissed, but some NPCs may use a seemingly random sprite, instead.
- Their house expansions are always the same: an empty room in v1.4 onward, or Abigail's expansion (ocean wallpaper, sword, game system) in v1.6 onward.
- They all draw from the
MarriageDialogue.yamldialogue file exclusively.
:* On occasion and especially on rainy days, they will simply say "...", which seems to be a fallback string for when dialogue is missing from a file.
- Ineligible NPCs will never ask the player if they want to have a baby, no matter how long they've been married.
:* However, further tinkering can allow ineligible NPCs to have children with the player. Everything works perfectly beyond that.
Additionally, ineligible NPCs follow a very predictable daily routine which completely overrides their usual behavior:
6:00 AM |
The NPC will be in the kitchen making breakfast, standing on the porch, or standing in the "spouse outdoor area". |
|---|---|
Randomly |
After being interacted with at least once (or if they're mad at the player), if there is any furniture or decorations in the house, the NPC will gravitate toward and stare at one until the next event. If not, they stay where they were all day. If the NPC is standing in the "spouse outdoor area" at the time, they will teleport inside. |
10:00 PM |
If there is a bed in the house, the NPC walks over, crawls into it, and sleeps. If there isn't a bed, then the NPC wanders to the bottom-center of their house expansion and stares northward. They will be mad at the player the next morning and won't make them breakfast or tend the crops. |
Rainy Days |
If not starting in the kitchen, the NPC stands in the bottom-center of their house expansion and stares northward all day. |

Unused Maps#
Removed Extended Intro#
Present inside the game is the interior of the bus that drops the player off. The player would have been able to move around and interact with people and objects on the bus. This also would have introduced a character named Dobson as the main villain of the game, who was intended to be an antagonistic, ruthless JojaMart employee. The map remains intact though, and there are multiple strings for the characters and objects programmed in.
(Graphics Rips: Takaia)
Summit#
Could be accessed from the inaccessible part of the railway map area. However, its tileset has since been overwritten. This part of the area has been remade and re-added in the 1.5 update.
Unobtainable Items#
Several unused items exist, complete with unique descriptions and graphics.
Bus Ticket#
A bus ticket that the player would have held onto during the extended intro. Its graphic was replaced with the magnifying glass in Version 1.3.
Weapons#
Most of these weapons were unobtainable prior to version 1.6. Most have different stats after becoming obtainable, however, and both the Rapier and Galaxy Slingshot remain unobtainable.

Unused Skill-Based Titles#
In the game, the highest level the player can reach is Level 25. As a result of this, the following titles go unseen during regular gameplay:
Minimum Level |
Title |
|---|---|
26 |
Agriculturist |
28 |
Cropmaster |
30 |
Farm King |
This is because of the way the game calculates this title, which includes a luck level not implemented in the game:
(farmingLevel + fishingLevel + foragingLevel + combatLevel + miningLevel + luckLevel) / 2
Unused Graphics#
Characters#
Dick#
In the game's files, Content\Characters\Dick.xnb contains a spritesheet, which is identical to Willy's spritesheet. [https://twitter.com/ConcernedApe/status/1504566206635954176? ConcernedApe has confirmed in a tweet] that at one point before the game was released, Willy was named "Dick".
Dana#
Content\Characters\Dana.xnb contains Penny's pre-release spritesheet. Via the above tweet we know Penny was at one point named "Dana".
Others#
A variety of unused food icons, including several meat-related items. At one point during development it was possible to have farm animals butchered for meat, but this feature was removed during beta as ConcernedApe felt it clashed too much with the overall game's mood. The steak icon would later be repurposed in the game's 1.5 update as the "Bug Steak" item.

Developer Commands#
There are a handful of commands that only work in development versions of the game.

International users need to hack the game to access it, where the description simply reads "A lovely panda hat".
