The DOS Star Trek: 25th Anniversary is a point-and-click adventure featuring Captain James T. Kirk and his crew in seven missions.

Version Differences#

There are two versions of the game for DOS: The ~4MB floppy disk version, and the ~350MB CD-ROM version. The game was also released on both formats for Macintosh. Additionally, there was an Amiga 32-color floppy disk port done by an outside contractor.

Audio#

The CD-ROM version improved the game's sound effects and added voices (by the voice actors of the original TV series, no less).

Mission 7#

The final mission, "Vengeance", is much shorter in the floppy version. In response to players' feedback, it was expanded in the CD release.

Starfleet#

The Starfleet admiral can be either male or female in the floppy version, but they will always be female in the CD version.

Ending Title Card#

In addition to added narration and voiceover, the ending title card memorializing Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek) has received a short voiceover praising his life.

Anti-Piracy#

The player has to select 1 out of 20 possible destinations on the star map on each mission. The destination names are not shown in-game, but in the manual that comes with the game. Traveling to an incorrect destination will cause a battle to start which will most likely result in a game-over. This isn't too bad considering you can reload a savegame and try again, but having to do this on every mission means you have to try 140 times at worst.
