Changes from the Genesis Version

This is a sub-page of Sonic the Hedgehog (2013).

To do:

  • Some screenshots and videos showing the differences wouldn't harm this page;
  • Write the unwritten articles.

Zone Differences#

To do:
Make a comparison of the structure of the zones, like in Sonic 2 remaster;

Green Hill Zone#

  • The boss in Act 3 can no longer be harmed until the wrecking ball has been completely lowered.

Marble Zone#

  • In Marble Zone Act 1, an invincibility monitor can be found at the top of the stage, along with a new wall preventing access. This was added for Tails and Knuckles to find with their abilities.

Remaster (Map)

  • In Marble Zone Act 3, a track of collapsing blocks can be found in front of the boss arena, which is not the case in the original game. These were presumably added to prevent new players from careening off into the lava when entering.

Spring Yard Zone#

Star Light Zone#

Scrap Brain Zone#

Towards the end of the shortcut in Act 3 of the Genesis version, there is a platform similar to the secret platform found in Labyrinth Act 1 that is intended to carry the player across the second-to-last gap in the shortcut route. However, at the start of the level, the player is forced to walk far enough from the platform that it unloads itself, but the platform refuses to load itself back in, causing it to not be seen under normal circumstances. The platform can be found by enabling Debug Mode, entering Placement Mode, and going underneath the starting area.

In the 2013 version, this platform is not present at all, even if the player uses Placement Mode to go directly under the starting area. This platform is also absent in Sonic Origins, likely due to the version of Sonic 1 in that game being built off of the 2013 port.

Final Zone#

  • The legs on Robotnik's Egg Mobile are seen in full. Previously, they were cut off slightly at the top.

Miscellaneous Differences#

  • The emblem on the title screen is now properly centered, and the functionality of the infamous "PRESS START BUTTON" text has been restored (albeit the message itself is slightly altered, reading "TOUCH TO START" normally and "PRESS BUTTON" with a controller in use).
  • Sonic has an extra inbetween frame when looking up and crouching, as in future titles.
  • Sonic kicks up dust clouds when he skids, as he does in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and future games.
  • While Debug Mode is enabled, monitors can be used more than once.
  • The Level Select menu style is taken directly from Sonic 2, including newly made zone icons for the Sonic 1 zones.
  • Player options now include Sonic/Tails, Tails Alone, and Knuckles. Tails and Knuckles have their movesets from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, allowing them to get to areas that Sonic cannot normally access. Sonic & Tails Mode now lets Tails fly Sonic around without the need for a second player. By hitting Up and Jump when Tails is airborne, he will take off and if you jump to him he can carry you as in Sonic 3.
    • There is no NATIVE support for playing as Knuckles and Tails (there never was), but it's still possible to do so by use of the Level Select menu. The game will be set to play as Knuckles with a Tails assist.
  • The title screen changes depending on which character is selected.
