This is a sub-page of Persona 4.
There's plenty of unused text dialogue from NPCs and unused events lying around. Some of them even got recorded, but not all unused voice clips are written out in the event data.
Unused Dialogue#
Chie Alternate Rank 3 - E590_045.PM1#
An alternate version of Chie's Rank 3 Social Link event (specifically, the version that plays when Nanako is unavailable during the lategame) is found in this file. The only difference is an extended beginning (shown here) and an abrupt end to the file; other than the script, the file seems to be unfinished. It's also missing the "Fog has enveloped the area" messages a lot of outdoor SL event files have (for the end game). It is strange to note that the filename would indicate this as an alternate version of Rank 4 rather than Rank 3.
Chie Oh, I started lifting weights at home lately. |
Chie But I got chewed out again for putting a hole in the wall, so... |
Chie So yeah, I think I've gotten a little more buff, but... whaddaya think? |
"You've gotten bigger." "You've gotten thinner." "I don't see a difference." |
Chie By "bigger," you mean more muscular, right? |
> Chie has a skeptical look on her face... |
Chie Yeah, exactly! I've tightened up, huh!? |
> Chie is happy. |
Chie Hmmm... Well, I just started. But they have gotten harder. |
> Chie is nodding to herself. |
Chie Alternate Rank 9 - E590_091.PM1#
An alternate version of Chie's Rank 9 Social Link event. Note that, like other event files, messages at the end may seem out of order, signifying things that were added later.
> The rain shows no signs of stopping... |
Chie ...... |
Chie Since that incident, I don't really get it anymore. |
Chie Honestly, why do I want to get stronger? |
Chie I tell myself it's to protect people, but maybe it's really just to protect my own heart. |
Chie I always thought I could do anything on my own. But that's not true... |
Chie I have to have someone with me or I'm totally useless. |
Chie It sounds cooler to say I'm doing it for someone's sake, but in reality... |
Chie I just want to look cool. I want someone to rely on me. |
Chie Even with the murders, I feel like I want Yukiko to accept me again... |
Chie Me over Yukiko... Maybe it's just that. |
Chie Maybe in the end... I haven't changed. |
Chie ...I must look stupid. Heck, I am stupid. |
Chie I look like an ass, huh...? |
"You're cool." "All that's still you." "Still worried about looks?" |
Chie Sheesh... Big talk, Leader...! |
> Chie is holding back tears as she smiles. |
Chie Hahaha... Yeah, really... |
Chie ...I'm pretty stupid. |
Chie Yeah... I guess you're right. |
> Chie is holding back tears as she nods. |
Chie Everyone's trying to get out from the shadow of their past... They're trying so hard... |
Chie And yet, I'm the only one who hasn't changed... |
Chie So I worried. I got scared... Like I was being left behind... |
Chie I understand now... |
Chie Because... You protected me. |
Chie I realized that I was trying to protect everyone else... |
Chie Thank you... I can finally take a half step forward... |
|
> Chie is smiling cheerfully... |
> You feel your relationship with Chie has grown deeper... |
Chie > ...That one time, I was happy to know I could count on you. |
Chie Y-You know, I've always been the one people depend on... |
Chie So I'm not that good at letting some of the burden fall to others... |
Chie ...... |
Chie Back there... Why did you say you'd protect me? |
"Because you're my friend." "Because I love you." |
Chie Friend, huh...? |
Chie Yeah. That's kind of a relief... |
> It seems Chie is trying to smile... |
Chie Umm... I'm going home now. I think I'm catching a cold. |
Chie I'll see you later! |
Chie Oh, er, just like that, huh...? |
Chie I-I... I've never really gone out with anybody before... |
Chie Oh, umm, sorry... What I mean is, uhhh... |
Chie Can I call you... my boyfriend...? |
Chie Oh, man... I'm super happy... |
> Realizing each other's feelings, you decided to go out with Chie. |
Chie Let's stay here a little longer. |
> You spent a long while with Chie... |
Chie I've always been careful about how I look to other people. |
Chie I wanted to be the cool one, surrounded by admirers. |
Chie I strained to become that person... When all I really wanted was someone to save me. |
Chie ...... |
Chie But I finally feel like I understand now, about the pathetic me. |
Chie She's me too. Pathetic and all. |
> Chie is smiling cheerfully... |
Chie Well... Maybe this is how I am, but take care of me, [Protagonist]-kun. |
> You heard Chie's honest feelings... |
> You feel your relationship with Chie has grown deeper... |
Chie The rain's not stopping, huh? |
> You hid from the rain for a while and went home. |
Shopping at Junes - E860_073.PM1#
Originally, during the two instances where you can go grocery shopping at Junes with Nanako and Dojima, a random Social Link character would show up. In the final game, it's just you and the Dojimas, and the scenes are fairly uninteresting. Of note is that each character has one for when they are in summer or winter clothing, even Naoto. However, Naoto is not available as a Social Link until after everyone has gone back to winter oufits. This implies she was to join earlier, or at least her Social Link started sooner.
Rise Whoaaaa! Is that you, Senpai? And you brought the fam! |
Rise I'm kinda jealous you get to shop together with your family... |
Rise Oh, me? |
Rise I'm here doing the shopping for my grandma. She's pretty busy. |
Rise Plus, Junes is pretty far from the house... |
Rise Hmm? We meet again, Senpai! |
Rise You seem like a pretty tight family. |
Rise I'm making a stew tonight, and I need some chicken... |
Rise But there's sliced chicken, boneless chicken, and all these other kinds... |
Rise I don't know which one's good for making stew. |
Rise Can you help me pick one out? |
Yukiko Huh? Are you here to shop too? |
Yukiko Obviously, so am I... |
Yukiko ...A large group of customers came in today, and we've run out of food in the pantry... |
Yukiko And I'm responsible for cooking the staff's dinner. So here I am, buying ingredients for tonight's supper. |
Yukiko *sigh* What should I make tonight? |
Yukiko Oh... [Protagonist]-kun. You came at just the right time. |
Yukiko Where's the ramen aisle? |
Yukiko When I made dinner last time, everyone said they'd prefer ramen... |
Yukiko I should have learned at least one easy-to-make recipe... |
Yosuke Whoaaa! Dost mine eyes deceive me? You're out shopping with your family? |
Yosuke I never saw you as the domestic type, [Protagonist]... |
Yosuke Anyways, we're having a daily sale right now. It's a good time to buy! |
Yosuke Oh, and I've heard good things from the customers about this beef. |
Yosuke So, what are you making tonight? |
Yosuke Yo! We've got good deals today, too. |
Yosuke Huh, me? |
Yosuke I'm here shopping... Though it's more like window shopping. |
Yosuke By the way... why is your uncle standing around the snack aisle? |
Sayoko ...[Protagonist]-kun. I never thought I'd meet you here. |
Sayoko Oh, is that your father? ...Your uncle? |
Sayoko He's pretty handsome. |
Sayoko He seems like a bad shopper, though... |
Sayoko Oh, hello. |
Sayoko I'm here to buy something to make dinner with... Actually, I'm too tired to make anything tonight. |
Sayoko Have you been down the ready-to-eat meal aisle? Did you find anything that looked good? |
Sayoko ...I always buy those when I get lazy. |
Kanji Whoa! S-Senpai... What a surprise. |
Kanji My mom told me to go get her some stuff... |
Kanji Meat and veggies, mostly, since they're on sale... |
Kanji But maaaan... I didn't want to come here... |
Kanji It's so awkward wearing clothes like these in a deli... |
Kanji Huh? You here shopping again? |
Kanji Me? Uhhh... I'm here to get stuff for lunch tomorrow... |
Kanji D-Don't get me wrong! I-I ain't the one making lunch! |
Kanji M-My mom cooks 'em... |
Chie Heeey! Out shopping with your family? |
Chie Me? I just bought some protein shake mix from upstairs. |
Chie And then I had a craving for beef, so here I am. |
Chie Oh, and amino acid drinks too... |
Chie My strategy for putting on muscles is to eat meat, drink protein juice and amino acids, and sleep! |
Chie That's my kinda workout! |
Chie Woah! [Protagonist]-kun and Nanako-chan! |
Chie It's nice to shop with the family, isn't it? |
Chie Y'know, my mom sent me here even though she hasn't decided what to make tonight... |
Chie I bet she's just too lazy to go out. |
Chie So I'm gonna get myself some snacks as a little reward for my hard work. |
Naoto Hm? Shopping with your family, eh? |
Naoto I myself am here for some coffee beans. |
Naoto Junes has a surprisingly extensive selection... |
Naoto Oh, I just remembered... I need sugar, milk, and bread as well... |
Naoto Good evening. |
Naoto Have you all come to get groceries for tonight's dinner? |
Naoto I'm to restock on milk and other essentials... |
Naoto I still haven't given a thought to tonight's meal. |
Naoto Maybe I should make it for the first time in ages... |
Kou Yo, [Protagonist]. |
Kou Where do they keep the shopping carts? |
Kou I didn't think I'd have this much to carry... |
Kou Our maid in charge of groceries quit... |
Kou So now I'm the one who's gotta do it... |
Kou Hey, are you shopping with your little sister? |
Kou I envy you, man... |
Kou I can't wait till my little sister's old enough for me to take her shopping. |
Kou It'll be fun to buy her some snacks... Besides, that way I have an excuse to get some too. |
Daisuke Whoa, it's [Protagonist]. |
Daisuke My mom just sent me a text telling me to go shopping for her... |
Daisuke Why would she ask ME to go shopping? Geez... |
Daisuke Pork, veggies, eggs, cheese, and... snacks...? |
Daisuke Gimme a break... This is gonna take forever... |
Daisuke Yo, [Protagonist]. |
Daisuke I'm here buyin' food for my dog. |
Daisuke ...But I didn't know there were so many different brands. |
Daisuke I was thinking maybe he'd like some deli meat instead... |
Daisuke But when I told my mom via text message, I could see how pissed she was through the phone... |
Naoki Oh, hey. You're shopping here, too? |
Naoki Every time I come here, I'm amazed at the size of this place. |
Naoki In fact, this is now the third time I've gotten lost on this floor... |
Naoki My sister must have had a hard time working here and trying to keep all this stuff organized... |
Naoki Oh... [Protagonist]-san. |
Naoki Shopping with your family? ...I envy you. |
Naoki I'm here to buy some beef for tonight's dinner. |
Naoki We're having Korean BBQ tonight. |
Ai It's [Protagonist]! I can't believe you're shopping. |
Ai I'm shocked. |
Ai We're having steak tonight at my house. |
Ai So they sent me out to get some premium grade. What a bore... |
Ai Speaking of, do you know which ones are{clear}} the best cuts? |
Ai I have no clue. You should help me look for it. |
Ai Huh? We meet again. |
Ai I heard the snacks are on sale today, so here I am. |
Ai I wish there was a convenience store around here... |
Yumi I'm surprised that you go shopping with your family. |
Yumi I'm here to shop too, for my house and for the hospital. |
Yumi The shop at the hospital is such a rip-off. Stuff there costs twice as much as it does anywhere else. |
Yumi Plus, the food from there tastes horrible... |
Yumi I have a lot to buy, but I can't complain. Going shopping is pretty much the only thing I can do for them. |
Yumi Hey, it's you again. |
Yumi Do you remember when the daily sale begins today? |
Yumi My mom said that I should wait for the sale before I buy things. She said I can save a lot. |
Yumi Maybe I'll wait around for a little while longer... |
Yumi By the way, what did you buy, [Protagonist]-kun? |
Ayane S-Senpai! |
Ayane Um, please don't look inside my basket. There's nothing in it but snacks... |
Ayane I have a habit of eating snacks after practice or when I get home. |
Ayane So whenever I come here, I always stock up on them... |
Ayane Oh, Senpai! You came at the right time! |
Ayane Do you know where I can find soup broth? |
Ayane My mother told me to go buy some... |
Ayane But I have no clue what aisle that's on... |
Eri Hello there, [Protagonist]-kun! |
Eri Is that your sister and your father? |
Eri I have to make something for dinner tonight, but I still haven't decided what I should make... |
Eri I may just buy something from here that's ready to eat... |
Eri Though I'm a bit suspicious about Junes's premade food... Don't you agree? |
Eri Hello, [Protagonist]-kun. I'm buying some prepared food today. |
Eri When I tried it last time, I was surprised at how good it was. |
Eri Fried chicken, gyoza... Oh, the sushi here is very good, too. |
> You had a chat... |
Dungeon Entrance Party Management#
In the Desolate Bedroom, the entrance to Magatsu Inaba, like all the other dungeon entrances, your party members have lines when you talk to them for various points of the game. However, in this case, there are only two points at which you can talk to your party members: when Magatsu Inaba is the current dungeon, and during the True Ending when it's time to fight Izanami. Like the other dungeons, this one has dialogue for initiating conversation with party members while no one is missing and there is no current dungeon deadline. However, in this case this point can never happen: after clearing Magatsu Inaba the game skips straight to December 23 and the next time you can enter the TV World is on the path to the True Ending in March. As such, the following lines go unused in the PlayStation 2 version of the game. In Golden, where January and early February are playable timeframes and the player can enter the TV between these two events, this text is used as normal.
Yosuke I just don't like this place... It gives me the creeps. |
Chie Ugh... No matter how many times I come here, it still gives me the creeps... |
Yukiko That scarf and chair... Could it be...? |
Teddie This place is creepy... |
Kanji Gah... |
Kanji That scarf... Wow. |
Rise I hate this place... |
Naoto This is where Yamano-san... |
Naoto Isn't it...? |
Likewise, the entrance to Yomotsu Hirasaka, the final dungeon in the True Ending path also has dialogue for when there is no current dungeon. But once you clear Yomotsu Hirasaka, that's it; the game is over and the following lines can never be seen:
Yosuke It's... all over now. [Protagonist]... Thanks. |
Chie Alright, [Protagonist]-kun! |
Yukiko It's all over... |
Yukiko But...What's going to happen after this? I mean, you heard what they said... |
Teddie This is the end... the end... I won't be with Sensei anymore... |
Kanji ...... |
Kanji Wh-What!? Quit starin' at me! |
Rise This is it, isn't it...? You've almost done it, Senpai...! |
Naoto With this, it ends... That's rather sad. |
Dungeon Conversations#
In the final game, of your party members, only Naoto's social link can be reversed, and none can be broken. However, many of the characters have dungeon conversation dialogue text that imply that the girlfriend mechanics from Persona 3 were in Persona 4 at one point.
Yosuke Hey, um... did you do something to Yukiko? |
Yosuke It seems kinda awkward around her lately... Is it just my imagination? |
Yosuke Hey, um... did you do something to Yukiko? |
Yosuke As soon as I mentioned your name, she stopped talking... It feels really awkward... |
Chie ...Hey, [Protagonist]-kun... |
Chie I don't know what happened, but I think you should apologize... |
Chie Why waste time with small talk? |
> Chie seems to be in a bad mood... |
Chie ...I don't have anything to say to you. |
> Chie won't even look at you... |
Yukiko You know... Chie's been acting weird since you got here, [Protagonist]-kun... |
Yukiko Hey, Chie's acting weird. She won't say a thing about it to me though... |
Yukiko You haven't hung out with Yosuke-kun lately... |
Yukiko Shouldn't you talk to him? I think he's waiting for you... Maybe. |
Yukiko ...There's really nothing to talk about. |
> She looked away from you... |
Yukiko ...There's really nothing to talk about. |
> Yukiko's eyes seemed red... |
Teddie I won't say anymore. You must know what you're doing, Sensei... |
Teddie ...But Chie-chan's been real scary all this time! Hurry and make up with her, pleeeease! |
Teddie I won't say anymore. You must know what you're doing, Sensei... |
Teddie ...But Yuki-chan's been real scary all this time! Hurry and make up with her, pleeeease! |
Teddie I won't say anymore. You must know what you're doing, Sensei. |
Teddie ...But Nao-chan's been real scary all this time! Hurry and make up with her, pleeeease! |
Naoto Chie-chan doesn't seem to be her usual cheerful self... Do you know something about this? |
Naoto My deductions point to you as the likely culprit... |
Naoto Chie-san's acting that way, but I think she's concerned about you. |
Naoto It's affecting the group's morale, so I'd like you to mend your relationship with her... |
Naoto You want to talk...? I have nothing particular to say. |
> Naoto's hat hides her expression, but her tone is lower than usual... |
A lot of dungeon conversations involving Teddie say "not used" because conversations are Social Link level dependent, and Teddie doesn't actually join until Rank 2. Conversations with Teddie and Naoto are even fewer, since Naoto doesn't join until halfway through, and Teddie's Social Link is plot dependent. The conversations start at rank 5, which is the rank the Star Social Link is at when Naoto joins the team. However, Teddie ranks up to 6 the very next day after Naoto joins the party, and you don't get a chance to go dungeon exploring in between. As a result, this conversation can never be seenː
Teddie When times are tough, I remember that great feeling from the night of the school trip... |
Naoto ...It was interesting indeed. |
Naoto I was surprised when I was there, but... I should've taken video footage at the time. |
Teddie What a pity! Then I could've enjoyed it again and again... |
Naoto No, no... It would have made for effective blackmail material. |
Social Link NPC Dialogue#
A few of your social link friends have dialogue for Reversed Social Links and making up with them (or failing to).
Chie#
Chie Oh... What? |
> Chie seems somewhat cold... |
"Let's go home." "Nothing." |
> With your Enthralling level of Expression, you were able to convey your feelings. |
> ...... |
> You were able to make up! |
> ...... |
> It seems her temper hasn't subsided. |
> If your Expression skills were Enthralling, you might be able to make up with her... |
Chie I'm sorry. Heheh... |
Chie Let's go, then! |
Yukiko#
Yukiko [Protagonist]-kun... What do you want? |
> Yukiko seems somewhat cold... |
Let's go home. Nothing. |
> With your Enthralling skill in Expression, you were able to communicate your feelings to Yukiko. |
> ...... |
> You were able to make up! |
> ...... |
> It seems that her temper isn't cooling off at all. |
> If your Expression skills was at the Enthralling level, you might be able to make up... |
Yukiko Oh... So it was a mistake? I'm sorry, too. |
Yukiko *giggle* |
Yukiko Let's go, then. |
Rise#
Rise ...Is there something you want? |
> Rise seems somewhat cold... |
"Let's go home." "Never mind." |
> With your Enthralling skill in Expression, you were able to communicate your feelings to Yukiko. |
> ...... |
> You were able to make up! |
> ...... |
> It seems that her temper isn't cooling off at all. |
> If your Expression skills was at the Enthralling level, you might be able to make up... |
Rise I'm still mad... but I forgive you! I won't next time, though! |
Rise Let's go, Senpai! |
Social Link Non-Event Interactions#
Teddie and the Fox both have dialogue for Social Link interactions that don't result in a rank-up. However, Teddie's Social Link is completely plot driven and you can only interact with the Fox on a level up, after you complete a quest.
> Food court, rooftop... |
> You spend valuable time with Teddie... |
> Tatsuhime Shrine... |
> You spend some quality time with the fox... |
Unused Social Link Text#
Inside the event files, alongside the folders and files for the Social Link events, there is a group of dummy event files internally labeled with "Gasoline Stand employee social link rank [X] dummy". However, the first one appears to be overwritten with Margaret's Social Link initiation. There is also two strings inside the file for the social link status screen that read "Gasoline Stand Worker" and "Social Link explanation message. Gasoline Stand Dummy." There is indeed a gasoline station and a gasoline attendant character who offers the Protagonist a job at the beginning of the game, but no part-time job is available there. This was perhaps a placeholder used during development, considering the gasoline attendant's role in the story.
The Judgement Social Link, like the other social links, has a description on the Social Link status screen that changes at each step. However, this Social Link progresses quickly and sometimes the rank increases twice in one day with no opportunity to view the menu in between. As such, the descriptions for Rank 2, 4, 7, and 9 go unused, and they are, in order:
The possibility has arisen that
there may be another culprit.
Namatame wasn't responsible
for the murders.
You decided to follow Adachi
into the TV world.
You discovered where Adachi
was hiding.
Note that a similar situation occurs partway through The Fool rank...or at least, it would if the description for the Fool Social Link ever changed.

Rise Battle Text#
Rise Kujikawa doesn't actually join the party member as a fighter, but within the code for requests for All-Out Attacks and Follow-Up Attacks, Rise has messages as well. However, they aren't actual lines, but instead developer messages informing testers that these should be impossible to see.
All-Out Attack:
You should never see this line!
If you're reading this, someone screwed up!
This isn't supposed to exist in the game!
Follow-Up Attack:
Dummy line!
This shouldn't happen!

Apparently, at one point, dreams were meant to randomly boost Persona's stats instead of boosting Social Link status.

Shuffle Time Arcana Failures#
Some of the Arcana card effects during Shuffle Time can fail, such as the Magician not being able to change skills. However, there are such messages for all the Major Arcana cards, even the ones that can't fail. The ones that can't fail have these developer lines, some of which are quite humorous:
I pity The Fool when this message
appears, because it's a bug. Get
cracking, QA, and write it up.

Social Link Descriptions#
In the final game, only two Social Links can be Reversed (Naoto's and Ai's) and only one can be Broken (Ai's). However, there are strings for the Social Link status screen for every S-Link in a Reversed and Broken state. Some imply that the girlfriend mechanics from Persona 3 had not been removed until later in game development, while others are messages stating that those messages shouldn't be seen.

Augmentative Fusion#
Margaret has unused dialogue involving the scrapped Augmentative Fusion mechanic for the Velvet Room.
I am one who serves Igor-sama...
I'm still in training but I am capable of persona fusion.
But unlike Igor-sama I am unable to deal with all kinds of persona.
Those persona whose fusion that is left to Igor-sama.
Ara Mitama...
Kushi Mitama...
Nigi Mitama...
Saki Mitama...
Using these materials do not simply change the focus of the personas in your possession, but can be strengthened for you.
But for strengthening to occur I will need you to leave those persona for at least one whole day.
I do not mind if they are left with me over one day please do not forget that leaving persona here for a period will place a burden on them.
I cannot say what will happen to a persona if it exceeds the limits of strengthening so please consider deeply before making requests.
