Regional Differences#

Language Options#

  • The Japanese version has voice over, text and subtitles in Japanese only. Furthermore, some traits in the Japanese language that are not normally present in other games are used here. For example, text will scroll from right to left for files and text crawl, trick box puzzles use Japanese numbering, and treasure chest puzzles are navigated from right to left.
  • The North American version has English and Japanese voice overs, with text in English only. In the English localization, all instances of "oni" were translated as "ogre". This change did not carry over into subsequent games in the series.
  • The European version has English voice over only, with text and subtitles in English, French and German.

The FMV involving Hecuba turning into her demon self is 10 seconds shorter in the international versions. A great portion of her transformation was removed, presumably due to some of it being sexually suggestive.

Below: a censored Japanese version of the FMV used when setting the voice language to Japanese in the North American version. This version of the FMV does not exist in the Japanese and European versions of the game.

Version Differences#

Remastered Version
The remastered version is based on the original PS2 version. Therefore, none of the features from Genma Onimusha are included.

  • Remastered graphics with smoother framerate. It is also possible to choose between a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. In 16:9, the top and bottom of the pre-rendered backgrounds are cropped, which also scroll vertically during traversal.
  • An "Easy" difficulty setting was added in addition to the original game's difficulty, which is now labeled as "Normal."
  • Weapon switching is now possible during gameplay, except for during combos.
  • The tank controls remain assigned to the d-pad while fully 3D controls are assigned to the left analog stick.
  • The musical score from the original version is replaced with a new score by Rei Kondoh. This is due to the controversy surrounding the original composer, Mamoru Samuragochi. Any references to Samuragochi, including his credit in the opening movie, were removed.
