NASCAR Kart Racing is EA's last NASCAR game ever released. It's got a really neat slingshot mechanic, but there's no co-op mode to actually take advantage of it. There's also no voice acting, but instead voice art.
NASCAR 2005 Leftover Code#
The game's code retains a large amount of functions and text from the GameCube version of NASCAR 2005, which EA Tiburon developed. Some of the libraries, including the version of Flash used for the menus, as well as the VP6 video player, were used in the final game, though a lot of the code (mainly the functions beginning with Race) is redundant and never actually called.
Unconverted ELF Executable#
Present in the root directory is NascarKartRacing_dev-opt.elf, which contains the game's debug symbols. It converts to both the game's main.dol executable, as well as NascarKartRacing_dev-opt.dol, the latter of which is also present in the root directory.
Unselected Player 1 Graphic#
The player selection screen includes a graphic for when player 1 is not selected, and while it is loaded into memory, it is never displayed on screen due to Player 1's slot remaining selected by default (as each of the players' slots light up as more players are chosen in the menu).
Obscured Flagman Fred Sprites#
While Flagman Fred has full-body sprites, they are never shown in full due to always being covered by the in-game dialogue box.
Unused Music#
Tracks 21 through 23 in nmusic.dat, a set of three more "live"-sounding hard rock tracks compared to the rest of the game's music (which relies a lot on synthesizers mixed with rock), are unused. Track 21 did get used in an ad introducing the real-life drivers featured in the game, though.
Oddities#
- Three cheat codes are included in the game: GlobalAdapter::mUnlockPettyCheat, which is stored at 802dc0d0 and unlocks Richard Petty; GlobalAdapter::mUnlockLoganoCheat, which is stored at 802dc0d8 and unlocks Joey Logano; and GlobalAdapter::mUnlockAllCheat, which is stored at 802dc0e0 and unlocks all drivers and tracks. Out of these three, only the Logano code was ever officially released (via a promotion with GameStop), the Petty code was mentioned in-game but never listed anywhere, and the "unlock all" code was never publicly disclosed.
