Moomin's Tale

To do:
Many, MANY Regional Differences that still need to be written about.

Moomin's Tale is an adventure platformer game based on the beloved Finnish book series Moomin, more particularly its 1990s anime adaptation.

Initially developed and released in Japan, the game's western conversion seemed to be rather troubled. Its European iteration had many drastic alterations with large portions of the game even being completely removed. In addition, the planned North American release never materialized despite receiving plenty of coverage.1

Regional Differences#

The European release is heavily simplified in terms of scope and presentation, mainly focusing on platforming gameplay.

  • Pretty much all of the exploration, character interactions and dialogue have been cut in favor of simpler cutscenes to segment each act.
  • Levels are split up in a traditional platformer world format (e.g the first screen is 1-1)
  • Saving is removed and has been replaced with a password system.
  • Moomin is no longer accompanied by Snufkin in any portions of the game.

Debug Menu#

Game Genie code 012-02F-E66 with the Japanese version will start the game in a debug menu similar to the one in Jankyuusei: Cosplay Paradise, where you can test music, sounds, view maps, start at any point in the game or return to the title screen.

While the code for displaying the debug menu remains in the European version, and can be activated using the Game Genie code 011-F1F-E66, the text was removed and so only a blank screen is shown.
