Unused Graphics#
Unused Intro Art#
Spinnerette and Soahc both have artwork that would've been used for their boss intros. Their fights are multi-phased, with the intro art instead being of One Baby Spider and Chaos respectively, meaning that their own art is never seen nor needed.

Unused Events#
There are two sets of unused art related to events.
Early Signal Amplifier Quest Art#
Early versions of the event art for the Signal Amplifier quest, featuring an early design of Soahc

Loan Shark Event#
Art for an unused Loan Shark event that never happens in the final game

Low Gravity Weather Event#
Art for a cut weather event that would've inflicted the Low Gravity weather. Low Gravity is one of few weather settings in the game that cannot occur through events, instead only being found on the Moon at all times.
Miscellaneous Sketches#
Various rough sketches, some as placeholder graphics and others left for dataminers like us to find.

Unused Animations#
Note: some of them need to be clicked in order for them to move.
Bosses#
An unused animation for an unused ability for Dybbuk where he is summoning a zombie.

An unused animation for a unused attack for Guillotina where she uppercuts your cats.

An unused animation for Guillotina 2 doing her Enrage animation from her pervious fight.

Zodiac has an unused animation of him spinning around while firing wildly, potentially as part of an unused attack.

This same animation also exist for The Chaos version of The Organ Grinder

An unused death animation for Johnny, showing his head cracking open like an egg. His champion form also has the same animation. (Click to animate)

A kicking animation for one of Dreadnoughtus' legs, likely as part of an unused attack.
Dr. Mangler with a worried expression, possibly meant for when Mangler's Monster is killed.

Rosary |
Uncommon |

Blessings are not a known mechanic in Mewgenics, so it is unknown what this would've done. Perhaps it could've increased the chance of positive random events occurring? |

Checkers |
Uncommon |
Use: Move 1 tile diagonally. If a unit is in the way, leap 2 tiles over it instead, dealing 4 damage to it and refresh this. You cannot use this to move to a tile you've previously occupied this turn. |
||
Class Seals |
|
Uncommon |
An unused category of single-use consumables exist, which would've allowed the player to convert a cat into the class depicted on the seal. Graphics for these exist for every class in the game |
Unused Weather Events#
There exists one weather event in the game that cannot occur: Pandemonium. It has associated graphics, but does not seem to have any event text. It would've given all units a 25% chance to be inflicted with Madness at the end of each round. Could've been quite punishing, which would explain why it went unused.

Unused Cinematics#
game_trailer.swf contains the entirety of the game's launch trailer uploaded on Edmund McMillen's YouTube channel prior to release.
Unused Text#
Unused Intro Dialogue#
There exists unused strings of intro dialogue for the Spinerette and Bumblefoot fights. Spinerette's go unused for the same reason her intro art is unused, while Bumblefoot is a midboss which naturally lack intro dialogue at all. The fact that Bumblefoot has text for him implies that he may have been planned to be a main boss at some point.
Spinerette#
You look delicious.
My children are... hungry!?
Mother is angry...
Your blood with nourish my brood!
Don't you dare touch my babies!
Mother is watching you...
Spinerette also has an unused intro name, which is the same as her internal filenames, suggesting that her name was changed prior to release
Spider Queen
Bumblefoot#
Bumble bumble!
Bumble hungry!
Bumble smell yum yums!
Bumble feel gassy...
Dr. Beanies Screenshake Test#
Dr. Beanies has some unused lines of dialogue that were likely meant to test certain functions such as emotions, screen shaking, and sound effects.
[m:default]Hey, guess what?
[m:shocked]!!!
[m:default]WAHT THE HELL WAS EVEB TGAT?
You can also trigger it [ss]LIKE THIS!! MUAHAHAHA
Or even [ss:100][m:veryangry]SUPER CRAZY LIKE TOO!
Hey did you hear that? What about [sfx:PickupCoin].[sfx:PickupCoin].[sfx:PickupCoin].[sfx:PickupCoin]. THIS???
OR THIS? [sfx:PickupCoin][pause:1][sfx:PickupCoin][pause:1][sfx:PickupCoin][pause:1][sfx:PickupCoin][pause:1] that's a lot of coins.
Final Boss Looting#
Each of the Chapter 4 bosses (Throbbing King, Soach, and The Creator) have descriptions for both a successful and failed attempt at looting. In the final game, these are shown with in-engine cutscenes, meaning that this text is never seen.
Throbbing King#
The cat tears open the chest of the Throbbing King and withdraws a legendary item!
The cat reaches down and touches the corpse of the Throbbing King...
The chest of the body explodes, showering the cat in bloody debris.
The cat's blood boils and its body turns inside out as the cat collapses into a gruesome mound of flesh and dies.
Soach#
The cat rips the tongue of the head out and reaches down its throat, pulling out a legendary item!
The cat touches the floating head and is cursed by the Chaos God!
Its body contorts into terrifying shapes and the cat screams in terror before collapsing into an inanimate, silent heap of flesh and fur.
The Creator#
The cat reaches down and rips apart the creator's body.
Inside the cat finds a legendary item!
The cat reaches down to examine the Creator's body...
Its body shudders briefly, then the cat collapses onto the ground, dead.
Unused Music#
Break His Chains#
In the final game, Break His Chains is relegated to a track that can randomly play on the WMEW 99.9 radio at home. However, it was originally planned to be the music track for the Caves before it was replaced by Crystalline Dreams. Remnants of this can be found in the "caves_old" folder, where unused map, event, and fight variants of the song exist.
Watch on YouTube
===Brush Your Teeth===
An instrumental version of Brush Your Teeth, the battle theme for the kaijus (Pyrophina and Zaratana). As with all other bosses, the track used in game has vocals, so the instrumental version is never heard anywhere.
Scrambled#
|
Unused |
Used |
|---|---|
An altered, loopable version of the track 'Scrambled'. Notably, it is stored in its own folder, instead of in the 'radio' folder with all other songs that exclusively play on the radio at home. Dev comments, alongside the general nature of the song, implies that it was originally meant as a boss theme for the Rift.
Unused Injuries#
Among the injuries cats can get when they are downed in battle or in other events, there exists a few that are marked 'todo' internally and cannot be inflicted in game.
Name |
Effect |
Notes |
|---|---|---|
Cracked Tooth |
-1 melee damage |
In effect, it gives -1 Strength, identical to the Broken Paw injury |
Broken Jaw |
-1 damage. Cannot eat food |
Radio Mode#
A hidden mode can be accessed by typing -radiomode true into the Steam launch options. This mode consists of a unique looping screen and the WMEW 99.9 radio music playing on loop. Pausing the game and selecting the exit to menu option will revert the game back to its original state. This mode was initially acknowledged by Tyler Glaiel on his Twitter just a little over a week after the game's launch.
One Million Trashed Cats Dialog#
The total number of cats the player has trashed (as in specifically sending them to the trash can symbol on the Boon County map, not donating them to any of the game's NPCs) is tracked internally by the game. When the player trashes exactly one million cats, which is almost certainly impossible without hacking the game or playing the game for an obscene amount of time, Steven has unique dialog acknowledging it.
Cut-Off & Unseen Graphics#
These graphics, though used, have some details that are cut off or otherwise not able to be seen in normal gameplay.
Mother#
The sheer size of Mother in her intro art renders a few details of her off screen, namely the righthand side of her and the horns on top of her.
Turn Order Icons#
|
|
To do: |
Several turn order icons have details that are cut off and cannot be seen.

v1.0.20610#
Launch version of the game.
v1.0.20689#
Released on February 19th, 2026, as a beta branch on Steam. This patch was focused on major bug fixes and "easy" changes that are unlikely to cause secondary issues.
QOL Changes
- Coin/Food/Item zoomers no longer prevent you from opening the backpack while they're animating
- Added "Limit Framerate" to video settings.
- "Tall" tiles now go semi-transparent when in tactical view
- Fixed item sort order upon returning from an adventure (one of the last changes pre-release was adding sort buttons to the in-combat inventory screen and this broke how they sorted upon returning home)
- If playing on steam deck, End Turn (Hotkey) is now bound to "Enter Key" by default instead of nothing. Should allow for some steam input config hacks for those who want to bind it to a back button easier.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed Copy Cat / Learn From Me being able to copy things other than spells in some cases
- Fixed Tina3's Mama Maggot and Familiar Korbee not having a portrait
- Fixed a certain very late game boss fight's summons running away when the boss died. In this particular case they weren't supposed to run.
- Fixed a few cases where an ability or passive icon in the UI would not update after being overridden by a new one (ex when using a Forbidden spell while already having 2 disorders)
- Fixed a minor odds issue related to how Stimulation affects a parent with a class passive but not a class active
- Fixed level spawn order to spawn static objects before familiars (This should fix a few cases where a familiar occupies a space a static object wants to be, causing it to spawn in a different place and sometimes blocking cats or enemies in)
- Fixed Eat Rock and Rock Crusher showing a tooltip for Petrify
- New idle animation for pet rock and pet boulder and fixed death gib
- Fixed the way Interchange interacts with Bonus Move and Bonus Attack
- Fixed a case where quitting after losing your last cat to a sacrifice event would cause a crash upon re-loading the save file
- Fixed a few flickering pieces in a cutscene
- Fixed amoebas being able to drop larger rocks partially off-map
- Added "texture_atlas_size" to settings file to allow for some configuration hacks for under-min-spec machines. Default is 4096. Note that lowering this will also require lowering "texture_scale_big" as well so larger textures can fit into the atlas. This will remain settings-file-only, no intent to add this to the options menu, however if this does solve missing textures for you, please let me know which config does and what your system specs are and I'll see if I can detect it and use that as the default.
- Misc localization fixes

v1.0.20695#
Released on February 20th, 2026. Incorporated changes from beta branch version 1.0.20689 alongside the following changes.
- Fixed a very late game enemy leaving an invisible corpse
- Fixed Unscarred+ and Uncapped HP causing infinitely growing HP
- Lowered the odds of seeing a variant version of one act 3 miniboss
(Source: Steam)
v1.0.20738#
Released on February 27th, 2026, as a beta branch on Steam.
Important changes and major bugfixes
- Left/Right cat selection arrows in the house behavior adjusted:
- Cats are no longer grouped by room when toggling left/right. Age only. Opening the cat selection window after a new day will select the youngest kitten regardless of if you clicked around on other cats before opening the window. Dead cats are always sorted at the end (clicking left from the youngest cat will wrap around to the end of the list).
- If you are ZOOMED IN to a room, the cat selection list is now strictly limited to cats in that room (clicking left/right will only toggle between cats in that room, and never select any cats outside of that room)
- Current list location memory should be a little bit better when moving cats to pipe/box and then continuing with arrows. Left clicking cats while the cat status window is closed will no longer effect which cat is shown when you open the cat window.
- This required a full rewrite of the left/right arrow behavior & sorting code, so if you notice any issues / inconsistencies / bugs / unintuitive behaviors related to this please let me know.
- Traps can now be triggered with physical attacks/abilities
- Added a small visual effect & alternate walk cycle for player cats with flying
- Fixed flying units not viewing fire tiles as a hazard even though it could still burn them
- Tiles adjacent to enemy rattlesnakes/hellhands now have a hazard cost for pathfinding.
- Fixed one post-game dr beanies dialog sequence getting skipped
- Captured familiars now spawn after everything else to prevent levels from instantly ending if you had 100+ charmed flies
- Fixed Freeze not protecting corpses from damage
Minor changes and bugfixes
- Fixed cases where a main quest item could get duplicated if you had multiple quest items equipped when completing one of them or unlocking a new one
- Fixed an alley level that generated a mouse in a hole (this was a new issue caused by the spawn order change from last week's patch)
- Fixed one act 3 enemy missing from the Hallucination pool
- Fixed Dark Ritual's upgrade not working
- Fixed Fish Necklace affecting enemy flies. Fish Necklace now uses Poisonous instead of its previous (effectively the same) effect.
- Fixed Tinfoil Hat not working against permanent madness/charm. Tinfoil Hat's effect now cleanses relavent effects when it's passive is applied to prevent initialization order dependency for its effects.
- Fixed a late game boss repeatedly shooting a frozen minion in some cases.
- Fixed Stalk (and similar) ability targeting from going crazy if the tracked target goes off map
- Fixed no-target ability hotkeys from deselecting if you move the mouse around on the map
- Fixed a few enemies that transform on death from being stuck at 1hp if killed while stunned (as well as 1 or two player effects that used the same passive)
- Fixed an incorrect international character in Steven's font
- Fixed "Thicken"'s statuses not having icons or tooltips.
- Stalk tooltip fixed to specify "enemy" instead of "unit"
- Fixed a few tooltips having incorrect info (Pins and Needles, Old Hose)
- (Most tooltip changes are in english only for now, this won't leave the beta branch until those are in)
- (Internal change) Localization csvs have been merged into one large file instead of 20 smaller ones at the request of the localization team. This shouldn't cause any noticable changes in game, but if anything looks off let me know!
- Misc localization fixes

- Fixed a case where the cat menu would not re-open after piping a cat
(Source: Steam)

Released on March 4th, 2026, as a beta branch on Steam. Incorporated changes from beta branch versions 1.0.20738 and 1.0.20744 alongside the following changes.
- The "loot" option in the events after each act's final boss is now explicitly a luck roll (luck effected this a little before, now it should effect it more making it easier to judge risk here).
- Minor fixes to shark enemy colors
- Fixed incorrect name for "Polyp" item
