Terminology

This is a sub-page of ManiaPlanet.

In order to fully understand the context of some entries on these pages, a little bit of terminology is needed that is specific to TrackMania games. Different TrackMania games can have slight differences in functionality. The terminology in this page is specific to ManiaPlanet.

Block Units#

A block unit is a cuboid representing the grid space on the track that the block will use.
Each block can use one or more units to create a "bounding box" that block will occupy on the track.
Each cell has different parameters that can be set, such as:

  • the zone (terrain) it can occupy
  • if it should generate pylons (and where)
  • clips on 4 cardinal directions of the unit
  • if it's underground

The size of the units is determined in the environment.

Block Types#

Blocks can be one of the 8 available types that each have a specific purpose and unique functionality.

EDFlat#

Blocks used for the flat ground parts of terrain.
These blocks are used internally and are not accessible in the editor.

EDFrontier#

Blocks used as transition between different flats and/or height levels. Usually in a form of a hill or a ledge/border. This is what is visible in the editor.
These blocks have multiple different variants for each combination on how these can be connected together.

EDClassic#

The simplest version of blocks. No special functionality.

EDRoad#

Blocks usually used for roads. These can be placed by holding down the mouse button and dragging the cursor in a line.
They can be connected together to create corners and junctions.

EDClip#

Clips are special blocks that allow multiple different other blocks to be connected together if they share the same clips.
These blocks are used internally and are not accessible in the editor.

FreeClip#

FreeClips are special types of clips (EDClip) that don't extend out of the block units. They can be placed on all faces of the block.
FreeClips, like regular clips, are used internally and not accessible in the editor.

EDPylon#

Pylons are special pillars (not to be confused with "Classic" blocks used as pillars) that are generated automatically on specific blocks.
They do not occupy the track grid layout, and instead, they are placed on the corners of the block units.
These "blocks" are used internally and are not accessible in the editor.

EDRectAsym#

A special type of block that can create rectangular structures by holding down the mouse button and dragging the cursor.
Most commonly used for inflatables in the Stadium environment.
It's also used by blocks that can be placed on other "RectAsym" blocks.
