Unused Items

This is a sub-page of Left 4 Dead 2.

Some weapons did not get their chance to be used for killing sumbitches, regardless of officiality of instructions.

Riot Shield#

A scrapped melee weapon. Unlike the other cut weapons, the shield is almost finished but cannot be spawned normally without a weapon script.

Ammo Pack#

A reskinned medkit that would have resupplied ammo for the Survivors. According to the Developer Commentary, it was cut because it went against the idea of players having to pick up new weapons when their current one was low on ammo. Although it still has a texture sheet and a command to be spawned called give ammo_pack, the game will not spawn one.

"[Matt Boone] With the added variety of weapons in Left 4 Dead 2, we wanted to encourage players to scavenge weapons and switch between them frequently. We found that placing ammo piles scattered through the level fought against this goal as players tended to find one gun they liked and then never switch, as long as they had practically endless ammo. We experimented with removing ammo piles from most of the environments so that the only way to get more ammo was to find a new gun, and we immediately saw players switching weapon types more frequently. We also experimented with giving players deployable ammo packs, similar to the upgrade packs such as the incendiary and explosive ammo that are in the game today. Carrying an ammo pack was perceived as being less valuable than carrying a healthkit though, and many players bypassed the item, counting on finding another gun along the way. We found it was important, however, to continue to place ammo piles in the finale areas, to give players a home base to fight from in the longer set-piece battles."

Defibrillator Pack#

Also a reskinned medkit, used as an early version for the Defib unit.

Didgeridoo#

A planned melee weapon that was scrapped during development. All that remains is a low-poly world model without textures. A viewmodel can be found in the authoring tools, and textures for it were leaked as part of the Left 4 Dead Zero leaks in 2018.

M1911 Pistol#

The M1911 Pistol's viewmodel and dual-wielded world model from Left 4 Dead exist in the VPK files for left4dead_dlc3. However, no texture is associated with it.
