Gabriel Knight: Shadow Hunter#

Used

Unused

The image on the right (File 101.p56 in the internal file list) appears to be a mockup title screen for an earlier version of the game. The subtitle, "Shadow Hunter", kinda gives away the plot, so it was probably changed because of that. Gabriel's feet were also cleaned up a bit, making them larger and giving them a better perspective.

In the normal title screen, the game draws the options on top of the image by using other game assets. But the unused screen has them applied to the artwork already. Plus there's a "Tutorial" option instead of "Exit". The final game features interactive help, but does not have a tutorial.

Land of the Green Isles#

Grace, I've a feeling we're not in New Orleans any more...

File 2000.p56 in the internal file list is a picture of the starting point from King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow. This is not used in the game. Both King's Quest VI and Sins of the Fathers use Sierra's Creative Interpreter game engine, albeit in different revisions.

Early Gabriel Knight and Grace Nakamura Portraits#

File 8999.p56 contains the image shown above. It has early portraits for Gabriel and Grace, with Gabriel looking very un-scruffy-like.

Unused

Final

Gabriel looks a bit older in the unused portrait, his hair looks a lot more manageable, and his skin tone is somewhat darker than in the final.

Unused

Final

She's only smiling because she's plotting your downfall.
Gabriel, looking up girl's phone numbers IS NOT RESEARCH.

Whereas Grace is smiling, has a slightly noticeable cleavage, more noticeable collar bones, and her nose, eyes, glasses, ears, and hair were redone.

Unused Text#

Unused Dialogue#

Note that any text displayed in parentheses at the start of a dialogue line is coded to not appear in-game; this was used by Sierra to insert context notes for the voice actors.

The bones wouldn't be useful there.

It's a sequin.

Neither of these are items available in the final game, though the snake scale from the fortune teller's veil is described as looking like one of its sequins at first.

Evangelist

"(EVANGELIST)I want you to take ahold of your prayer clothes. Better yet, take ahold of your radio, and let's do a miracle!"

"But first, I want to talk about doing what's right. Those of you out there listening to these radio waves of comfort--you know what I'm talking about."

"Everyday this program reaches out into the darkness and pulls lost souls from the grasp of the devil himself! Now I don't have to tell you that the Lord's work doesn't come cheap, my friends."

"So I want you to get up, right now, take out an envelope, fill it with whatever you can, and send it--today! We both know that's doing what's right."

"I ask you, my friends, have you done your share today? Or are you being carried by those dedicated souls who support this ministry with their generous gifts and offerings?"

"Remember, my friends; Faith that costs nothing, does nothing!"

"Simply send your Gifts of Faith to Reverend Bob, and your name will be blessed!"

"I have a letter here from a Mr. Tecal. Now, Mr. Tecal claims that all of us on this broadcast are only in this for our own financial gain--that we prey on the weak and unfortunate."

"Mr. Tecal, I would just like to say to you that my mission, and that of our entire broadcast, is to reach a hand of comfort into the homes of those very weak and unfortunate that YOU claim we thieve!"

"When men like you, Mr. Tecal, become willing to spend even a moment of YOUR busy lives to go into these homes and LOVE someone other than YOURSELVES, then you can speak to me of harm!"

"It doesn't come cheap to run this broadcast, Friends. I know you know that!"

"Please, support this outreach ministry with Gifts of Faith."

"I speak to those of you who can afford to support the comforting of those Forgotten Ones who cannot find comfort anywhere else in this lonely world."

"Several of you called in asking how that dear soul we had on last week with the tragic case of glandular over activity is doing."

"What a miracle we witnessed as your Offerings of Strength poured into our station to renew and bless this unfortunate child of the Lord."

"But I believe you can do more, and I know you will. Let's overwhelm those glands with the sheer power of Christian Love and Giving!"

"Send your tools of healing today to our station. I don't care if it's a dollar, a hundred dollars, or one-hundred-thousand dollars (God bless ya). Send it today, and take part in a miracle!"

"(GETTING VERY SAPPY AT END)That's it for this week, Friends. Enjoy the wonderful, wonderful music, and may God watch over you."

Judging by the context and its location in the script, this would've been an additional set of lines for the radio in Gabriel's apartment. Unlike other unused dialogue, it has no voice acting attached.

"(RRCC)Thank you for using M.C.B. Please enter your international number."

Narrator

(RRCC)Didn't Grace say you had to dial 011 first to get international?

Grace

"(RRCC. EFFICIENT)Here's that phone number. Don't forget--you have to dial 011 first to get an international line."

In the final game, no such requirement exists.

Gabriel doesn't want to use that on his motorcycle.

Interrogating the motorcycle would be rather fruitless.

It's Gabriel's motorcycle. He calls it "Ed."

The best way to move the cycle is to drive it.

Ed doesn't work that way.

Gabriel

"Ed's kinda heavy."

"(SPEAKING TO HIS MOTORCYCLE)I'm crazy about you, Ed."

The Lake Pontchartrain crime scene has various lines for interacting with Gabriel's motorcycle, which isn't an on-screen object in the final game.

"It's rather warm in here, isn't it?"

Malia

"I'm sorry if you're uncomfortable. The fireplace doesn't really give off much heat without the stove insert, so I indulge myself even in the summer."

Gabriel

"Yeah, well, I don't think it's the fireplace anyway."

Malia

"Mr. Knight, LYING about your identity and WASTING my time with stupid questions just because you thought I was 'cute' is NOT something I appreciate."

Gabriel

"Do you know anything about animal masks?"

Malia

"Animal masks? I don't know what you mean."

Unused conversations with Malia. Animal masks only become an available topic to ask about after Hartridge's lecture on Day 3, and this conversation happens on Day 2.

"Tell me what you know about Damballah."

Crash

"(SCARED. URGENT WHISPER)No! Don't say that word! They'll hear you!"

Gabriel

"They who?"

Crash

"Shut up, man!"

"I told you, I can't talk about it!"

Gabriel

"Does the name Ogoun Badagris mean anything to you?"

Crash

"(AFRAID)No! Don't say that name!"

Gabriel

"Why not?"

Crash

"It's evil!"

Gabriel

"Tell me about Damballah."

Hartridge

"(LECTURE MODE)Damballah is one of the major Rada Loa--also known as Damballah Wedo. He is an ancient Dahomean rain god, often represented as a large boa constrictor."

"Damballah is the most powerful and most violent of the Rada Loa. The Rada Loa are typically benevolent--as opposed, say, to the Pétro Loa."

Gabriel

"Can you tell me more about the Loa Damballah?"

Hartridge

"He is still worshipped heavily in Haiti, and when Voodoo first started in New Orleans, the early conclaves were reportedly based on the worship of the Great Zombi--the great serpent--Damballah."

Gabriel

"Tell me about Ogoun Badagris."

Hartridge

"(LECTURE MODE)Ogoun Badagris is one of the Pétro Loa. The Pétro Loa are much more violent than the Rada Loa."

"Some people believe the Pétro Loa originated in Haiti, but I have found some evidence that the Pétro Loa were African as well, though worshipped only by a small Voudoun tribe--and a very bloody one."

Gabriel

"Tell me more about Ogoun Badagris."

Hartridge

"He is a chief nasty, Mr. Knight. He is the spirit of war and destruction."

More conversation topic timing conflicts: Damballah and Odoun Badagris can only be asked about starting from Day 5, at which point both Crash and Hartridge are already dead.

Dearest Father: I offer these final words as apology for the failure I have made of my life and the harm I have done our sacred family office. Last night I learned that the women I wrote of, Tetelo, was the witch I sought. I committed terrible crimes, Father. First, I loved this witch. Second, I betrayed her. Third, I used our sacred family power to free her and aid her in destroying this colony. The talisman is gone--Tetelo took it. I can but pray for thy eventual forgiveness, for thy swift recovery of the talisman, and that my punishment in Hell will be long and bitter.
Thy undeserving son--Gunter

Easter Eggs#

To do:
Take new screenshots of these eggs.

Bayou Admonishion#

Die in the bayou on Day 6. When the "I really don't want to be dead" game over screen pops up, choose to quit to DOS. As the game exits, it'll print a little something extra in the text mode display:

Thank you for playing Gabriel Knight.

Now go to bed.

Jane Scribble#

Create a file in the game's directory named BUSTER. Now go to the Honfour at the end of the game, enter the seemingly useless office with the whiteboard, and Operate the area just below the eraser. Gabriel will walk over to the whiteboard, look around to make sure he's not being watched, and sketch out a stick figure labelled "JANE" - a tip of the hat to lead designer Jane Jensen.
