Japanese Text#

'...But what does it mean?'
This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation!

Although the game wouldn't release in Japan until another 31 years, Japanese text exists for the cutscenes in the international ROM, along with code to load the appropriate characters into the PPU. Edit RAM address $03C8 to be $00 rather than $80 to see this in-game. Alternatively, use one of the following Game Genie codes to see it in-game: AEUGTZEA (US version, affects PRG ROM address 1c2c6), AEUKPZEA (European version, affects PRG ROM address 1c2b9), AEKEALEA (unknown version).

Felix the Cat would see a re-release in 2024 by Konami for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. There were several changes made that apply to both the English and Japanese versions. Notably this re-release would correct the aggressively dark palette the original release had.

In the re-release of the game, the ™ symbol above the Felix the Cat logo was removed. The original NES version included the phrase "Push Start Button ǃ," which was changed to "Push + Button ǃ" for the Nintendo Switch version and to "Push Options Button" for the PlayStation 4 and 5 versions. Additionally, the copyright information was updated to remove references to Hudson Soft and Felix the Cat Productions, Inc. Instead, it now lists Felix the Cat™ and DreamWorks Animation LLC. The original notation "Licensed by Nintendo" from the NES version has been replaced with "All Rights Reserved" in the re-release. Finally, the purple bar under the Hi-Score has also been removed in this version.

Re-release

In the original NES game, the character Poindexter—who is from the 1958 animated series "Felix the Cat," which the game is loosely based on—appears on the title screen, peeking out from behind the "F" in the Felix the Cat logo. However, in the re-release of the game, Poindexter was replaced by Kitty Cat. This change occurred because Don Oriolo still owns the rights to Poindexter, while the other characters from the Felix the Cat franchise are owned by NBCUniversal/DreamWorks, which acquired them from Oriolo. Additionally, in the re-release, the character Rock Bottom no longer appears smoking a cigar.

Graphic Changes#

The magic wand sprites were changed. In the original, Felix faces forward. In the re-release, Felix remains facing sideways.

The tank was also changed. The re-release has Felix lowered down and is behind glass. The tank appears more toy-like in the re-release.
