Unused Models

This is a sub-page of Doom (2016).

As expected, this game has a decent amount of unused models that range from interesting to just strange.

Enemies#

Ceiling Turret#

Unused ceiling turret model, which is located in md6/objects/weapons/turret/ceiling/turret_a/assets/mesh/. It makes it's appearance in early hologram study video. As Lazarus Labs' design document suggests, ceiling turret was supposed to be hostile towards player, and in one moment it was friendly in a specific area of the map.

Olivia's Guard#

Placeholder model for the Hell Guards, which is basically Hell Knight, can be found in md6/characters/monsters/oliviasguard/base/assets/mesh/. They appear in gameplay footage in the second part of Noclip's documentary series DOOM Resurrected.

Unused

Used

Besides that, there's also staff and hammer models, that were made were made especially for them. They can be found in their own folders, md6/objects/weapons/melee/hammer/assets/mesh/ and md6/objects/weapons/melee/staff/assets/mesh/.

Pavdemon#

Simple cube model. which is stored in md6/characters/monsters/mp_pavdemon/base/assets/mesh/. Probably was used as a placeholder model for any demon in multiplayer.

Miscellanous#

Early Doom Slayer's Helmet#

Doom Slayer's early helmet, which's modeled after it's original concept art, and can be found in md6/player/human/base/assets/mesh directory.

Pickups#

Military Rations#

These are two pickup models which are were used for ammo and upgrade during game's development, as their names suggests - ammodrop_lg and upgradedrop_sm. However, at closer look, they actually appear to be military rations, which were probably used in the early iteration of the game. Both of them can be found in model/models/test and they share the same textures.

Santa's Hat#

A Santa's Hat, obviously was meant to be used around Christmas. It can be found inside model/models/pickups/ directory.

Placeholder Armor#

Placeholder models for armor pickup, whose are stored in the same folder as Santa's Hat.

Weapons#

Boomerang#

No, it's not from Rage, if you might think about it, but it's rather different model, which's unknown where this thing actually came from. Stored in md6/objects/weapons/thrown/boomerang/assets/mesh/.

Lightning Gun#

A version of Lightning Gun with different scope design, which can be found in models/weapons/arc_canon/.

Unused

Used

Nailgun#

Inside of md6/objects/weapons/mp_weapons/mp_nailgun/ folder, there's a model of Nailgun, which design resembles a weapon of the same name in Quake, so it's likely that this is either leftover from a Quake-themed project, or they wanted to combine the arsenal of both Quake and Doom. However, in further inspection, this model appears to be a heavily modified version of the early DOOM 4 Grenade Launcher model.

Magnum#

Strange harpoon-like weapon, which is stored in md6/objects/weapons/mp_weapons/mp_magnum/.

Plasma Rifle#

Different variant of plasma rifle can be found in models/weapons/energy/plasma_rifle/, and it's color scheme is based on concept art.

Unused

Used

Weapon Crate#

Early weapon crate, which is located in model/models/weapons/weapon_crate_01/. This doesn't seem to be the one used in-game, since the final model is wider on the sides.

DOOM 4 Leftovers#

Leftovers from the first iteration of the game.

Assault Rifle#

Despite the similarities, this is not the Heavy Assault Rifle used in the final game. Instead, this is a rifle used in the canceled earlier version of the game. It can be found in two directories: model/models/weapons/assault_rifle_3/ and md6/objects/weapons/assaultrifles/assaultrifle, and in last one, rifle does not include the sight.

Guardian Assault#

This model of the soldier is located in md6/characters/humans/male_rage/player_coop/assets/mesh directory, which implies to be as a leftover model from Rage, however, it's actually playermodel from DOOM 4's multiplayer mode, and was designed by Joel Byington.

Grenade#

Grenade model, which was used for the early DOOM 4, can be found in model/models/weapons/grenade/. Probably was used as a placeholder to develop the usable grenades for the final game.

Proximity Mine#

Model of proximity mine, which is stored in cooked/models/weapons/proximity_mine/.

Zombie#

A zombie model, which is likely a variant of an enemy with 3 heads and 5 arms shown in the same "push-forward combat" animatic and 2012 concept trailer. Located in model/basemodel/md6/zombie/zombie_a. However, it is missing from Multiplayer Alpha's files.

RAGE Leftovers#

Leftovers from Rage, another game developed by id Software.

Pickups#

Player's Hand#

Player's hand model, which is inside of models/characters/player/ directory.

Wall Turret#

Model of the wall turret, which appears in Rage's DLC The Scorchers. Can be found in md6/prototypes/weapons/turrets/wall/assets/mesh.
