Death Rally (1996)

Death Rally is a vehicular combat racing game and the first release from Remedy Entertainment. The game also happens to feature a special guest appearance from a certain someone.

Remedy would re-release the game as freeware in 2009 (being a native port for Windows). A remake was also later released in 2011.

To do:

  • Look into the shareware release.
  • Note more changes and differences from the v1.1 patch and the freeware version.
  • Jari Komppa detailed his work on the freeware release here.

Revisional Differences#

Freeware Release#

The game received some changes with the freeware release. This is the version of the game available on Steam.

  • The logo screen for GT Interactive was removed, probably due to them having effectively becoming defunct at this point along with not being involved with this release.
  • Remedy's logo was updated to the "bullet" design by Kiia Kallio used from April 1999 to April 2023. This logo can be found in the files as rmd.bmp.

  • The multiplayer mode was disabled from the game due to the original code used for IPX Networks proving too much work to fix up for the scope of the re-release.
  • A quit screen, called end.bmp was added featuring a message from Remedy.
Death Rally was developed by Remedy in 1995-1996 and published by Apogee. The game was both a labour of love and our first game to ship. The game's reception exceeded all of our expectations. We hope you'll still find the experience enjoyable or at least nostalgic.

A big Thank You to all the gamers out there.
