Pizza Beta

This is a sub-page of Cave Story/Cave Story+.

On 11/4/2026, a beta for the Steam version of CS+ was released as a 'private' branch. Tyrone (Nicalis' CEO) released the branch password in the 'main' Cave Story Discord server, but the update was also released as a Steam announcement... albeit with no mention of it being a private branch or the password details. The update's main feature is a long-asked for backport of the formerly exclusive CS+ Switch features, but *also* contains multiple changes under the hood to enable modding support, including storing formerly hardcoded values as .json files and a Lua API implementation.

Currently, it is unknown when it will be released on the main branch, and there are some things mentioned in the Steam announcement that do not work or are straight up not implemented at all in the current branch, but for now there are several interesting details regarding the internal file structure.

The branch name for this version is 'ModdersDelight' and the password is 'ModPizzaParty', hence the page name.

To do:
Document changes from CS+ PC and Switch, what exactly is used and what isn't, and verify what the current filepaths are.

File Duplicates#

- The challenge levels, Curly Story and seasonal graphics and were formerly referred to internally as 'mods', but are now stored in folders labelled 'Expansions', and 'Season' respectively, with each one having a .json config file instead of a main and sub-.txt file. However, the original versions of these mod folders are still present in the main data file. - As the Switch version uses .png, the assets have been updated to reflect this. However, there is a copy of the original version's entire data folder still present within the current one.

Unused Assets#

- The Time Attack completion artwork found in the DSi port (and the files of the eShop) is present in the main data folder. Unverified if it is used or not - it's a .png, but it's 1x resolution. May have been used to test the image display scripting command that has supposedly been added?

Filename Changes#

- Freeware sprites are now 'Classic' instead of 'ogph'
