Cheat Codes#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Figure out if the two other cheats are actually impossible, or just really long.

There are three cheat codes programmed in, but seemingly only one of them can be inputted.

Debug Cheat#

At the main menu screen, press A, B, A, B, A. The weapon equipping sound will confirm correct entry. This cheat has the following effects:

  • Gives the player all weapons, 30 ammo for the blowgun, unlimited use of the mallet, the gold map, 15 silver coins and 15 gold coins for the Adventure mode.
  • Removes the starting coin and gold map spawns, although the blowgun still appears.
  • Skips most of the cutscenes in Adventure mode, with the exception of the boss introductions. As a result, finishing the Super Rat Ride race will spawn Cenzo back into the overworld rather than triggering the ending cutscene.
  • Allows access to any race at any time, as all the rides are considered to be completed from the beginning. The transformed kids are all missing as a result.
  • Unlocks all the characters and race tracks in the Multiplayer mode, which is otherwise impossible to do.

Note that you will have to reactivate this cheat every time you return to the main menu, as its effects get disabled. Given its effects and simple inputs, this cheat was likely used by the developers for debugging purposes.

"You're Fired" Monkeys#

GameShark code 800C6BC3 0001 activates another cheat which replaces the switch-activated obstacles on each track with the monkey ones from Bumper Bugs and gives them a sign that says "YOU'RE FIRED".

It is possible this easter egg was added in reference to the major layoffs Terraglyph suffered during Carnivalé's development, in a similar way Hatman was created by Viacom New Media employees to mock one of the bosses at the company.

Hatman#

GameShark code 800C6F87 0001 spawns Hatman in the initial overworld area, next to the options tent in front of the maze entrance.

When far away from Cenzo, he will wander around randomly, when they're close, he will chase him, and once he is right next to Cenzo, he will exclaim "Oh man." (An otherwise unused voice clip, seemingly intended for Eddy in multiplayer as seen below) and start to run away until he is far enough to start wandering randomly again. If Cenzo collides with him, Hatman will explode into 8 silver coins in a circle formation. Hatman will respawn when re-entering the area. He does not react to any weapon attacks.

Hatman is a character hidden in a number of games, including Terraglyph's Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers, and was created as a parody of a boss at Viacom New Media who was very unpopular amongst staff. He uses the same model from Scooby-Doo! and, just like in that game, lacks any animations.

Hidden Menu Camera Angle#

Hold Z while walking towards the bottom of the main menu to change the camera to an alternate, much lower angle that is normally unused. This camera position also changes the collision in the area, allowing Cenzo to get up-close to the camera. Walking away from the camera will revert the camera angle and collision back to normal.

Unused Graphics#

Cutscene Images#

Several unused frames meant for the cutscenes.

Signs#

There is an unused model of a tall signpost that can be seen on the title screen by editing the ROM at 0x95F670, to replace 0005EAE4 80000634 with 000BA6A8 80000440. Though there is a version for each of the five attractions, it seems unfinished given how the texture is overlaid on top of a variant of the Felma & Luis sign. More unified and far smaller wooden signs would be used instead.

(Source: SubDrag)

Note that Felma & Luis' unused sign has Luis spelled as "Luiz".

Character Icons#

AO005 to AO014 are smaller, 64x64 versions of the multiplayer character icons. Some of the icons, such as Cenzo's or Koko's, are flipped. Additionally, some icons have slightly different designs compared to the larger versions:

Unused

Used

  • Ginger's icon has a redrawn, closed mouth, repositioned pupils and an outline on the left side of her jacket.

Unused

  • Red Baron's icon has a far simpler looking coat, with pretty much all of its details missing. The character select menu uses a smaller version of this icon.

Unused

Used

  • Da Boss' icon has small highlights in its eyes.

Miscellaneous#

BV001 is a background depicting a foggy swamp area. It may have been intended for the River Caves, as it has a swampy section in the middle of the track. The movie also has a scene taking place in a swamp inside the River Caves attraction.

CTICKET is a ticket with the Carnivalé logo.

DEFFONT is a simple and small unused font, likely intended for debugging or as a placeholder.

As seen above, MM176T04 is part of the scrapped signpost.

NEWGAME is self-explanatory. A different, larger graphic is used instead.

Obscured Graphics#

Blocked Carnival Entrance#

To do:
Get a better look at the entrance through hacking or model ripping.

CarnivaleN64_BrickWallBack_1.png CarnivaleN64_BrickWallBack_2.png CarnivaleN64_BrickWallBack_3.png

With careful positioning of the camera, the back of the blocked entrance where Cenzo starts the game at can be seen, revealing that it has the face and wings from the main menu entrance. In the movie this is the entrance to the carnival, which later gets blocked and the kids have to go through several trials to open it. A sequence where the player has to exit through the door after it opens may have been planned for the game but may have been scrapped or not implemented yet. Getting close to the door causes the camera to switch to a fixed angle that focuses on it, which the game otherwise only does for the ride entrances. Additionally, the tip of the left pole appears to have a texturing error, being a dull-looking grey rather than a bright yellow.

Ghost Train Entrance#

The top of the door leading to the Ghost Train ride has a gargoyle that goes completely unseen unless the player goes into first person mode.

River Caves Entrance#

CarnivaleN64_RiverCavesObscured_1.png CarnivaleN64_RiverCavesObscured_2.png CarnivaleN64_RiverCavesObscured_3.png

The River Caves entrance area normally blocks the use of the first person view, and due to the camera angles its impossible to see the entrance in full. However, a very specific spot near the exit allows the first person mode to be activated, allowing the top of the entrance to be seen. The top of the entrance can be seen in the track select preview in the multiplayer mode.

The exit is in front of a brick wall, which can't be seen at all without the first person view.

Ride Backgrounds#

CarnivaleN64_BB001.png CarnivaleN64_BG001.png CarnivaleN64_BR001.png

Due to the lack of camera control and first person view in the race tracks, their full backgrounds are impossible to see in-game.

Character Select#

Part of the background for the character select menu is blocked by the character icons and borders, mainly the green and red player backgrounds.

Unused Music#

The ROM contains a total of 20 unused music tracks. GameShark code 80093D57 00?? (where "??" is one of the below) will change the music in the password tent to the desired track.

Notes

0A

A short loop.

0B

A short loop.

0C

Same as the previous track, but with a more definitive end. Unlike other tracks, this one doesn't loop when forced to play in-game.

0F

A medley of the opening and mode select themes that would fit nicely over the end credits.

1A

A jingle in the style of the Aerodrome/Penny Arcade music.

1B

A jingle.

1C

A jingle.

1D

A jingle in the style of the River Caves theme.

1E

A jingle.

1F

A jingle.

09

Music from the opening cutscene. While used, the last 10 seconds go normally unheard due to the cutscene ending before the song could finish.

10

A full minute and a half long tune. Would be a good fit for the maze, which is completely silent outside of snoring enemies.

14

A full minute and a half long tune. A short 15-second variant is used in the password tents.

16

An alternate version of the first third of the Aerodrome music.

17

An alternate version of the second third of the Aerodrome music.

18

An alternate version of the last third of the Aerodrome music.

19

A short loop.

20

A downbeat jingle, fitting for a Game Over screen, which this build lacks.

21

A jingle in the style of the Bumper Bugs music.

22

Another jingle in the style of the River Caves music.

23

A 40 second long tune.

Unused Voice Clips#

27 unused voice clips can be found in the game's sound bank. These appear to have been intended for the human characters in multiplayer, but all the characters in multiplayer only play a single grunt sound when colliding with a wall or object.

Felma and Luis' dialogue seems to be a bit glitchy and repeats certain lines in place of these:

      Are you ready?

  You loose! Try again later
     You win 3 gold coins

Milly appears to have been planned to be introduced in an in-game cutscene similar to the other enemies and bosses, but in this build she is instead introduced through a still image cutscene.

        Meet your match
    Milly can outrace anybody
    Don't cheat, she knows!
        I am not worried

Oddities#

Track Select Previews#

The preview images for the Bumper Bugs, Aerodrome and River Caves tracks appear to have been taken from earlier builds of the game, and have minor differences from their in-game appearances. The preview images for the Ghost Train and Super Rat Ride tracks use concept art instead.

Preview

In-Game

The Bumper Bugs area uses a strange grey texture for the floor rather than the green grass the build uses and has a completely black background. The green creature has more teeth in the preview.

Preview

In-Game

The Aerodrome image uses the Bumper Bugs background rather than the carnival overworld one.

Preview

In-Game

The River Caves preview uses a different purple/orange gradient background that is nowhere to be found in the ROM.
