This page details bugs of Carnivalé (Nintendo 64).
Despite being unfinished, Carnivalé has relatively few major bugs.
Mallet Clip#
Using the mallet against a wall will push Cenzo away from it (even if he's not facing it), and this can be abused to push him against the doors for the Aerodrome, River Caves and Super Rat Ride races, causing Cenzo to clip through them. This bug allows the player to avoid grinding gold coins and play races out of order, and allows the game to be completed in less than 10 minutes if they head directly to the Super Rat Ride. This glitch can also be used to access the Punch 'n' Judy tent without having to collect 15 silver coins each time.
How hard this glitch is to perform varies on the location, with the River Caves being extremely easy and the Punch 'n' Judy tent being very difficult and precise.
Mallet Softlock#
If you hit a wall with the mallet while a clown toll booth is activated, if the dialogue box appears and Cenzo is pushed far enough to make the toll disappear he will be frozen in place, softlocking the game. The only way to exit is by pausing and pressing B to return to the main menu or getting killed.
If Cenzo is killed in this state, he may go back to his idle animation once his death animation is finished, which prevents him from sinking into the ground, and since the automatic exit to the main menu is set to trigger when he's fully underground he will stay there forever until the player exits manually.
Aside from pausing, the only action that can still be used is viewing the inventory.
Ghost Train Freeze#
Completing the Aerodrome or Super Rat Ride early (either through clipping or the cheat mode) and then going to the Ghost Train will freeze the game once Cenzo enters the door leading to the race. The music will change to the Ghost Train theme but the game will remain frozen at the overworld. The only way to exit is by resetting the game.
First Person Movement#
Activating the first person view next to a toll booth will allow Cenzo to move while enabled, which is normally impossible. The camera will still move down when walking forward and up when walking backwards, making navigation extremely difficult. If you have the blowgun equipped when performing this glitch the crosshair will not appear, but you can still fire. Switching back to third person will cancel the glitch.
Idle Animations Next to Toll Booths#
Staying idle next to the toll booths will cause the idle animations to not play, although their sound effects can still be heard.
Aerodrome Plane#
The crashed plane near the Aerodrome where the robot dog comes from has a small hole with no collision, allowing Cenzo to clip through it.
First Person Trigger#
Pausing the game while the first person mode is on and unholding Z will not return the player to third person once the game is unpaused. Holding and unholding Z normally will make the game go back to third person.
Ghost Train Lighting#
In the Ghost Train race track, all the character models lack any of the shading they otherwise have elsewhere in the game.
Duck Shoot Crashes and Softlocks#
The Duck Shoot minigame is rather unstable and will consistently crash if it has already been completed once. The game has a chance to softlock as well, failing to put Cenzo back outside after completing the minigame.
Super Rat Ride Upper Path#
Taking the outer route at the branching path midway through the track will cause the lap not to count when crossing the starting line.
