BioShock

BioShock is a genetically-enhanced shooter which proves to be different from the rest. A sequel came out in 2009, and a third game, BioShock Infinite, released in 2013.

Level Editor#

Named EdSplash.bmp, this is found in the Windows version. The Little Sister looks a little different from her final look. The area also doesn't look like it made it into the final.

To do:

  • Unused area? Maybe it was specifically made for the splash screen. Was there ever a level editor in the first place?
  • Go through the files to find any unused models, sounds, the usual.

Bathysphere's Floating Sign Post#

There seems to be a blank sign and four little rectangular prongs floating right under the Bathysphere. It could be used for distance between the ground at the end, or a placeholder for when the Bathysphere was to be completed. It follows you from the start, all the way to the end of the little trip. It has no physics or textures.

Unused Plasmids#

Unused Plasmids have been found in the game's files of Bioshock. It includes its use and some unused graphics that goes along with the Plasmid.

Teleportation#

Bs2-teleplasmid.png

A Plasmid that was removed late in development, as it is still referenced in the game's files. The developers explained why they removed the plasmid saying it ruined the game's scripting which resulted in breaks.

  • Use: Place a BEACON and then instantly return to it.
  • Sales Pitch: Using newly discovered genetic proximity and duplication characteristics, you can cross distances in the blink of an eye. Teleportation: Be there!

Speed Booster#

Bs-speedbooster_plasmid.png

Speed Booster was an early Plasmid in development, but ended up scrapped. It acted somewhat the same as the Aero Dash Plasmid from Bioshock 2's Multiplayer. It allowed the player to move at a very fast speed for a short period of time.

  • Use: Drastically increases movement speed.
  • EVE Cost: 6
  • Duration: 6 Sec
  • Slot Bonus: Additional 1 sec per slot
  • Sales Pitch: Feeling tired? Run down? Need a boost to get your work done quicker? SpeedBooster is here! Splicing SpeedBooster increases your efficiency beyond your imagination! Soon that promotion will be yours!
  • SpeedBooster: Quick like a Fox!

Parasitic Healing#

Parasitic Healing was a Plasmid that existed very early in development. The Plasmid would be used by shooting an energy bolt at an enemy, causing damage to the enemy and healing the player.

  • Use: Fires an energy bolt that damages enemies and heals you.
  • EVE Cost: 2
  • Sales Pitch: Parasitic Healing: His pain, your gain!

Early Plasmid Videos#

Watch on YouTubeWatch on YouTubePrototype versions of some, but not all, Plasmids are mixed in with the used videos. They have different music (the same that plays during the trip down in the bathysphere), and unfiltered narration. Some of them also indicate early names for Plasmids. Winter Blast is known as "Cryo Shard" in the video title and "Cryo" in the video itself, "Hypnotize Big Daddy" used to be called "Befriend Big Daddy", and "Target Dummy" was "Decoy" (which it officially became in BioShock 2).

Cut Weapons#

Bioweapon#

To do:
I have no idea how to rip models from Unreal Engine games, could somebody check?

The Bioweapon was the predecessor to the Chemical Thrower. It would have had a similar purpose to the Chemical Thrower besides the fact the Bioweapon uses Plasmids that were eventually integrated into the player's abilities. The four Plasmids it was capable to expel were Insect Swarm, Berserk toxin, Disease Cloud, and a generic repellent. As for the Bioweapon, only a specular texture map exists.

Regional Differences#

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

Germany#

The following changes were made to the German version, so that it could be released with an 18+ USK rating:

  • The amount of blood was reduced. For example, the pipe wrench isn't stained with blood after hitting an enemy.
  • Enemy corpse wounds were removed.
  • Enemy corpses cannot be picked up with Telekinesis.
  • Some of the hacksaws and blades were removed from corpses.
  • The German intro sequence was completely redone, consisting of a series of in-game cutscenes.

China#

BioShock was published in mainland China by CEASIA.

Due to the Chinese Communist Party's strict censorship of video games, the mainland Chinese version was significantly altered to allow for a smooth release.

This is the most censored version. Some of these changes are shared with the German version:

  • All dead bodies are now invisible.
  • Enemy corpse wounds were removed and replaced with a box 3 seconds after they get killed, which is implemented by an in-game script.
  • Because all corpses are removed, the Research Camera does not work anymore.
  • All blood has been removed.
  • Enemy corpses cannot be picked up with Telekenesis.
  • All text containing political content was changed to have a more vague expression. The character Suchong was deliberately translated to not look Chinese.
  • The ADAM substance inside the syringe is now blue (same with EVE) instead of red.
  • Since all the corpses have been removed, Telekinesis is rendered almost useless.
  • Two clips have been added to the game boot video; one is "Healthy Gaming Advice" and the other is a disclaimer stating that the game content is purely fictional and is for entertainment purposes only.
  • Since the bodies have been removed, the hacksaws and blades appear to be suspended in the air.

Bugs#

  • Since all corpses will be automatically replaced with boxes, the game will crash when the player tries to get Chlorophyll from the boxes by killing the Houdini Splicer in Arcadia. By killing enemies with ice and smashing them, the chlorophyll will appear directly as items, allowing players to pick them up without issue.
  • Since all the corpses have been removed, the clips of Little Sisters collecting ADAM substances early in the game look like they were collecting them from the air.
