American McGee's Alice

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Notes: Plenty of cut content to examine, including NPCs, models, and dialogue.

To do:

  • Cheshire Cat has an unused(?) behaviour for following stuff around (walking, stalking and running), but this might be for cinematics.
  • The trailer shows an older UI.
  • Texture sources from the late Stephen Hornback. Dated January 31st, 2001.

This is not your great-great-grandfather's Alice.

Unused Textures#

UI#

Demon Dice#

A UI element located at pak0.pk3/ui/demondice.tga, seemingly unreferenced by anything. It is likely the holes would be filled in with each die found as there are three dice in the game and three holes.

Screenshot#

There is a screenshot of an early version of the settings menu present in the game files, located at pak0.pk3/ui/screenshot_1.tga.

In the screenshot, the mirror is brighter than the final and has more detail on the sides. Besides that, there are several missing details such as buttons and the wall light. Alice's reflection has a different pose and appears to feature an earlier version of her model and texture. The background shown in the reflection is also simpler than that of the final game.

Unused Models#

The Carpenter and the Walrus Statue#

An unused statue of the Carpenter and the Walrus. While they do not appear in this game, they would appear in the sequel.

Voicelines#

There are many voice lines in the game files that go unused. The 2011 re-release of the game that came with Alice: Madness Returns also includes all of these lines in higher quality like the rest of the game's audio.

Alice Liddell#

Alice has some unused voicelines which mostly consist of different takes of used voicelines.

The used variant of this voiceline replaces "girl" with "Person".

I shouldn't think so. I'm a girl, and just now I wish to become very small. About this big.

This voiceline was probably another take of the used "I'm not on holiday." voiceline.

Cheshire Cat#

To do:
If I recall, there's a few weapons/items in the game that Cheshire has lines for commenting on that are never used.

Two takes of the Cheshire Cat remarking upon the Red Queen's death. The dialog file for qlair does include both of these lines, describing them in a comment simply as "CAT QLAIR CINEMATIC DIALOG" .

Neither of these lines has any associated lip sync data.

The Queen is dead and gone. Well, at least she's gone--for now. Long live Alice. Long live Wonderland.

Duchess#

The Duchess has one unused voiceline for her introductory cutscene. Given that Alice also has an unused line for this sequence (alcz2016 - I merely wanted to ask...) it seems likely that this would've played in response to that.

Mad Hatter#

To do:
mhat005 also unused, grouped with these

Various ramblings from the Mad Hatter, completely lacking context. Strangely, mhat006 and mhat007 ended up being used in the official soundtrack arrangement of "Tweedle-Dee And Tweedle-Dum."

All of these lines are present in the dialog file for hatter2, which labels them rather unhelpfully as HATTER HATTER2 DIALOG.

mhat007

If you knew time as well as I, you wouldn't dream of wasting it.

mhat008

The Queen accused me of murdering time. Very wrong. I have another object in mind.

Queen of Hearts#

While this dialogue is technically used, this version of the file lacks any of the "demonic" post-processing present on the used line. "Saftey" [sic] in this filename may suggest that this is a backup of some kind, though this is speculation.

The Queen of Hearts also has many takes of the "Off with her head" line but only one of them is used. It's not clear if the developers had some use in mind for these or if these are simply various leftovers from recording alternate takes of the line.

Similar to the Mad Hatter lines above, qnr001d is used in the official soundtrack arrangement of "Battle With The Red Queen". The final version of the line (qnr001a) is also present earlier in the track.

Mac-Specific Data#

Elite Force Leftovers#

These Finder icons, and the ElFb/ElFt file types they respectively represent, were left in from Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.

The ElFt type and icon weren't used by that game, either.

Mac OS Icons#

In Mac OS 8.1 and earlier, which don't support 32-bit "icns" icons, the game sports an alternative 8-bit "icl8". It's cropped from the same source art but is tinted darker, zoomed slightly further in, and has a black background.

The game's minimum requirements include OS 8.6, so hardly anyone would have seen this icon without peeking at the resource fork.
